  1. the glorious balance sheet on

    SFTB 1522-

Alex Ferguson was trying to turn around a Man Utd team that had not been champions in the best part of 20 years, that had an entrenched drinking culture and was up against rivals with a recent European pedigree – Everton, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Clough had alienated the core of the Leeds team that he inherited by his previous run ins with Don Revie and media comments that that Leeds side had cheated their way to silverware. He was always going to be up against it at Leeds for reasons that had nothing to do with his managerial ability.

Archie MacPherson has previously suggested that Jock Stein only went to Leeds to force the SFA’s hand to give him the Scotland job. So his travails at Leeds were due to wanting to be elsewhere.

I don’t think those examples fit with the current scenario at Celtic.

Yes it takes time to build a team but even a supremely talented manager if given years would struggle to build a team with barely any investment.

Ronny won’t be able to build a team in his own style using a host of temporary loan signings for example.

I don’t endorse spending beyond our means. I want to see us making less panic deadline day signings that don’t work out as that drains cash we can ill afford through transfer fee write offs, paying up contracts a la Bangura etc

There’s no harm in having 1 loan player in the squad, 5 is taking the mickey and must be demoralising for the likes of Brown and the other stalwarts of the team.

  2. As Ronny has now managed us for 20 games, I thought it would be good to take a more evidence-based look at our progress.

This doesn’t tell the whole story and we clearly need to improve in many areas, but there are strong signs of progress.

yes, noticed that. I believe Davie Moyes had more points on the board, than Van Gash has just now,at this point last season.

  4. Greeninbingley on

Trekked all the way across Oslo to our CSC bar … No game, no signal because of the high winds and horrible weather over here, I was told. Trekked back home for the last 20 mins on CQN (thanks to the Bhoys providing updates btw).

So haven’t seen the game. Obviously glad of the win and well pleased that Scepovic scored again. From what I’ve seen of him he will be a player for us, and I was one of the ones telling him to GTF when it looked like he was stringing us along before he signed.

John Guidetti – would sign him in 2 seconds flat. Gallus, big personality, skill, workrate, team player. He’s a cracker.

I think though that we can only hope he falls in love with us, like our last Man C loanee did!

A lot of clubs loaded with EPL oof will be after him and he can talk/sign a pre-contract in January.

I just hope he holds off, we get to the Europa knock-outs after Christmas and he gets a taste of playing for us in Europe. That might sway him from the undoubted joys of a fat salary at the likes of Stoke or West Ham.

On Ronny. He needs a season, and we are sitting pretty in 2 leagues and are still in the cups.

Today sounded pretty ugly, and Astra on Thursday certainly was, but winning ugly is a handy card to have. Specially when you’re trying to change the culture of the club from top to bottom.

RD’s approach to the game is what we need. Even if he fails, that won’t change.

  5. Thanks for the updates, especially OG.

There did seem to be some posters during the match that didn’t post any reaction to the goals…

    Wins for Celtic,Cliftonville and Everton..

    Life’s good..

    ——–

My 3 teams also. Since 1968, as a ten year old.

Naismith turning out to be quite a player for Toffees.

    Who would have thought.

  7. Back from CP and what are we to make of today’s game? If that was the fast paced attacking football that was promised then it has missed the barn door by a mile. So slow in the build up, nobody attacking the ball and too much side passing, static players and no imagination. I really can’t see where we are heading and I am old enough to have watched Celtic since before JS arrived.

  8. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Not too sure were the result would have gone until the sending off. Kilmarnock pressed Celtic high up the park, like Astra did, but failed to create the chances the Romanians spurned.

I like Guidetti, passionate, clever and an eye for goal. Ill be happy if we keep him and no one lese arrives in January.

    Scepovic looked ok too.

Denayer and VVD got back in the groove.

Too many Celtic supporters are unhappy, much of it is justified, but a lot of it is whining from spoilt ingrates. Sorry if that offends, but it’s the truth.

I’ll give you an example, to justify my comment. The young guy Calum Mcgregor, he’s what 21 ? And in his first 3 months in the team. Some are starting to get on the kids

back, when he makes the wrong decision. Jeez the Bhoy needs encouragement, perhaps a wee rest or coaching. But abuse and frustrated whines from the moaners.

  9. i think the sooner rony leaves the better for his sake. the man is on a no win situation, with some on here, cant do anything right, then when he changes the team formation, which a lot keep telling us on here, he is still not up to it as the manager of celtic football club,i think there is a lot of huns on this site, and im sure thats were all this negativity regarding rony is coming from. another small crowd again, what is happening to our supporters. im sure we need big changes at the top, starting with Dermot Desmond,

  10. Celtic cruise to victory & 3pts

    Good company at game

    I’ve had worse days :))))

  11. Sitting in a city centre pub, still trying to dry off, while my wife and niece are doing that shopping thing. thinking over today’s game, which I enjoyed, and reading about attendances.

It reminded me of a game against D Utd in the eighties, the year they won it I think, being in the jungle and wondering why the crowd was so poor. Those more keen than me could look back, but I think it was nowhere near 30k – more like 20. A Christmas time game which I also remember feeling really sorry for a guy called the elephant man. The less than grand old stadium was sparsely populated. the mob across the city had not been a threat for a few seasons at that time. My point – is there an element to our support that can’t be bothered turning out unless it’s to stop the other mob? our early eighties attendances might support this.

  12. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

Steve Evans was asked what he thot of Darryl Murphy. “Top Class” He also tipped Johnston Clark to be one to watch.

  13. Stairheedrammy on

Good game today’s against a decent Killie team who were going well in the league. They were well organised until the sending off though i thought we were just starting to get a grip of the game then anyway. We made a few chances and they defended as if their lives depended on it. Forwards playing well and we are making some chances, what is there to complain about?

  14. If anyone fancies tallying up our shots and shots on target stats for the first 10 and last 10 games, it’ll give us another helpful measure to check our progress.

Re the bams arrested re the assault on Zaluska

Perfectly reasonable that they have been arrested and released ….they will have been placed on Police Bail ….which is akin to the Bail a court would allow

Amongst other requirements it requires their attendance at court on a particular date

  17. the glorious balance sheet

Of course the circumstances at other clubs will have been different than at Celtic currently but the basic point still applies. It takes time to build a team. Alex Ferguson was given that time, more time than most managers would be given. It took him 4 years to win the FA cup and almost 7 years to win the league.

Neither Brian Clough nor Jock Stein deliberately failed at Leeds but neither did they quickly make them a winning outfit.

Loan signings are not ideal but we have only 2 true loanees, Guidetti and Denayer. I’d love either of them to stay but I fear the worst. The other “loanees” have been brought by the “loan with a right to buy” option. They have pre-agreed transfer fees and this is a smart way to go. If Berget, Wakaso, Tonev or Berget do not shape up as prospective Celtic players we can send them back without suffering the kind of loss that we look like sustaining on Balde, Pukki and Boerigter who were bought outright.

I don’t think Scott Brown will be devastated by that anymore than he has been through a succession of buys and loans, some who made it (Forster, Samaras) and some who did not (Miku, Brozek). He will either decide to be loyal to Celtic because he sees it as being worthwhile for him to continue here or he will have his eye on a move to a bigger club because it suits him.

There are a lot of posters advocating a simple, verging on simplistic, solution o keeping a core of our reliable better performers. The question remains as to how? Hooper and Wanyama did not move on because Celtic would not pay them more. They moved because Celtic could not pay them enough. The ones we could have kept were either not good enough to enhance us or were asking more money than they were worth to stay. It is a problem that befalls all Football clubs from the smaller leagues. I don’t like it any more than you do but I don’t believe there is a simple way to overcome it that we are not willing to try.

What is the failed strategy ?

    …………

Apologies I was off the blog for a bit.

The strategy that has failed is where our club has went from packed/ sold out to less than half empty.

The strategy failed to take info account that an ever decreasing team on the park is directly IMO, relative to the number of Celts who want to watch it.

To be clear, I’ll have a Celtic flag rapped around me when I die, Celtic daft but disappointed with the direction.

Logged on to catch the comments after our non-European hangover win.

*exactly and not too many teams accomplish this….3 weeks ago this blog and other Celtic boards were out of control over losing to the Accies at CP for the 1st time in 76 years after a win in Europe the previous Thursday….yet 2 years ago almost to the day kilmasonic had their 1st victory at CP in 57 years….this after a heartbreaking loss in the Nou Camp the previous midweek

I have supported Celtic for 60+ years and witnessed good Celtic teams lose because of cheating or incompetence by upper management………earlier this week a good Celtic player passed away…..he was like others of his ilk in playing for a side that was bereft of ideas….meanwhile we had the best reserve side in the country coached by a big mhan fae Burnbank.

The current management side including the board are trying to bring back the glory days using our own reared players…..despite all the trials and tribulations of the current season we are still in good shape.

As for Seville….even MON admitted we were punching above our weight then….I have NEVER watched that game again or even read about it….similarly with the San Siro 1970……..we lost FFS……I believe that after the former a wee reception had been set up for the players and staff at CP and seemingly Ghod refused to attend as he didnae celebrate defeats.

Lets get behind the current regime….aren’t we supposed to be “faithful through and through”.

  21. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

My prediction before the game that BBJ Guidetti would score 3 and BBS Scepovic would score 2 almost came true today. Guidettl hit woodwork, had another cleared off the line and the goalie made a great save from another of his efforts. Big Scep scored and could have had another easily. I enjoyed the game today. We never looked in any danger and when we win our game-in-hand we’ll be top of the table. Three straight wins for Ronny and the Bhoys with two home games lined up. This could be the making of the team. I thought Izzy was great today. Young McGregor needs a rest. Wakaso needs to accept responsibility and not treat the ball as if it is red hot. We’ve got to find a way of retaining John Guidetti beyond this season. He is the real deal.
