Central-mid quandary for Celtic

1573

We know what to expect from Aberdeen tonight.  They will flood (pardon the pun) central midfield, defend deeply and, let’s be clear, they will score any time we allow them the kind of space they exploited at Celtic Park this month.

Question is, what will Celtic do about it?  If Stefan Johansen’s ankle knock keeps him out the central-mid triangle of Johansen, Brown and Biton will be disrupted, and surely Neil Lennon will not revert to a central two after the Scottish Cup lesson.  The picture is further complicated by the injury to Emilio Izaguirre, which forced Charlie Mulgrew back at the weekend.  Mulgrew would be a suitable direct replacement for Johansen.

In 10 years doing this stuff I’ve probably used no more than a few dozen words to praise emerging young talent; it’s been a rough decade in that respect.  Without wanting to go overboard in any way, Darnell Fisher has looked more than comfortable at right back in the absence of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews.  Darnell’s problem going forward will be that he has two excellent international players ahead of him in the pecking order, but for tonight, I would be tempted to bring Matthews to left back (if he can do it against Barcelona….) and restore Fisher to the right back slot.  This would allow Charlie to sit alongside Scott Brown and Nir Biton in central-mid.

Well done to Frank McAvennie, who is jumping out of an aeroplane 15,000 feet in the air.  You can play your part in this exercise by supporting the Quarriers run, Chavey Down residential home, in Newton Mearns, which helps young people up to the age of 16.

The need is for sensory equipment, toys and wheelchair-appropriate play areas.  To contribute, go to Frank’s JustGiving page, or text FMSD 89 followed by £1, 2, 3, 5, 10 to 70070.

  1. Re game tonight

UEFA will not allow TV to show any other top flight football at peak time against C League games

We are on alba on delayed transmission at 22:00

The zenit v Dortmund game kicks off at 17:00 CP time and is on sky

I do not understand myself why ESPN are showing a French league match at 17:30 unless its perceived by UEFA as non “prime time”

As an aside is it really so difficult for people to check TV guides or bookie coupons rather than repeated calls on here every 10 minutes asking “is the game on”

You’ve sown the seeds of doubt in my mind. I always believed it was to do with Caesar and Pompey.mPompey was in charge of Rome and Caesar wanted to take charge. If Caesar crossed the Rubicon river, it was akin to a declaration of war. Caesar did cross it and either Pompey or Caesar was asked for an update on the state of play he said, “The die is cast. The Rubicon has been crossed.” Meaning, we have reached the point of no return.

Of course, I have previous on being totally wrong on such matters.

  4. scottish law and establishment is protecting itself, hmrc has no chance of winning, scottish judges represent the estabishment, the establishment wont concede that the former club rifc cheated it cannot as then it concedes that establishment is corrupt, a circle it cannot possibly square, those who believe in justice are sorely mistaken and will

see it for themselves and will look for points of law to justify, corruption is well afoot and to prop up scottish football is disgusting but to help pay for it well thats just pissing on us,complain its celtic against the establisment is wearing thin we know this know and to help pay for it well think about it.

If I remember correctly, the circumstances which led to Lord Doherty declaring himself as a Celtic fan and minor shareholder arose because he was involved in a situation where Artur Boruc was involved in a court case (something about a woman allegedly stalking him/texting?) and, given who The Holy Goalie played for,Lord Doherty put his hands up.

Again,if I remember correctly,he did not have to recuse himself as neither party believed there was a conflict of interest

    Think of it this way.

In the olden days, the only way you could get a divorce was on the grounds that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

This could be demonstrated in many ways — unreasonable behaviour, adultery and so on.

Imagine the scene, when two lawyers turn up in court re a divorce hearing and in the course of that hearing it is accepted by the defence that their client did indeed commit adultery.

There are two ways of dealing with this:

Scenario 1 — The judge of the day is met with both sides of the case accepting certain facts that lead to an inescapable legal conclusion — adultery is admitted, the conclusion is that a decree of divorce is justified– end of story.

Scenario 2 — The judge of the day is met with both sides of the case accepting certain facts that lead to an inescapable legal conclusion — adultery is admitted, and on the face of it it is perfectly reasonable to conclude that decree of divorce is justified. However, the defender is an 87 year old man who is in a wheelchair and who had been bed bound for several years.

Yet allegedly he committed adultery with a 23 year old model whilst on a holiday to Rio De Janeiro 4 months before the hearing– though there is no evidence that he has ever left his bed let alone the country!

In scenario 1 the judge finds that he has no option but to accept the joint statement of the parties to the court — he is bound by the facts as presented — he grants decree.

In scenario 2, The judge finds himself presented with exactly the same position but takes the view that he is duty bound to look beyond the joint statements presented to the court — and reaches the conclusion that what the parties are saying to the court is utter tosh and cannot be relied upon.

    Decree is refused.

In the tax case– the majority went with scenario 1, and Dr Poon followed scenario 2.

The majority did not disagree with Dr Poon’s findings re the evidence…. leaving any appeal court to make of that what they will.

I once had a case where an 80 year old man was found to have an unexplained naked 30 year old woman in his en suite bathroom. The wife sued for divorce on the grounds of adultery which was refused on the basis that just because there was a naked 30 year old woman in the bathroom did not prove adultery had taken place.

Yet, you never had to actually “Prove” adultery as legal adultery was in fact a presumption in law — in other words, circumstances had to exist which lead a reasonable person to presume there had been adultery!

Which is why lawyers used to hire Sheriff Officers to walk in on adulterous couples in hotels and the like— all by arrangement — just so that there was enough evidence for divorce!

In my case, the existence of the naked girl was not sufficient — even when the man concerned stated to the court that the young lady concerned had come into the house just to share a bag of chips!!

Quite why she had taken all her clothes off and hidden in the bathroom when the wife came in was beyond me.

Some lawyers see the law — others don’t.

    Besides ask yourself this.

Why would anyone want to be a judge?

Or to put it another way:

Why referee if you can still play fitba?

By the game I mean the 42 clubs who are members of the SFA and SPFL who would rather it just all went away and they can carry on as before.

I think fear of the social consequences is definitely a factor preventing honesty emerging and so in order to give virtue some ascendancy that fear should be removed.

The bargaining chip – not appeasement- is a root and branch enquiry into what took place, the failures of SFA governance that enabled it to happen in the first place, what they did when and after it went tits up and a reforming of the structures of governance that failed to uphold sporting integrity and see justice applied when that failure manifested itself.

In personnel terms Ogilvie and Regan’s heads on a plate but with the root and branch enquiry needed to restore trust that clubs (the game) will run themselves honestly by introduce processes that are policed and are seen to be policed.

At heart Scottish Football is resisting where other leagues have decided they need to go. We have rules but no enforcement machinery, we have strict rules on licensing whose teeth are pulled by discretionary powers on membership.

It is a governance structure designed to fail, lacking core values essential for sporting success, number one being honesty.

I am tired of being lied to my face by folk carrying placards saying “I’m lying” and “Liar” tattooed on their foreheads.

  16. for those that will always support celtic no matter what fine thats your choice but to pay for corruption and cheating in favour of establishment of new huns is your choice also which you are entitled to do, but remember you are paying for the priviliege and are condoning it, think about long and hard if you want a clean uncorrupted game then you know what needs to be done.

A splendid account of how some cases are complex and the burden of proof is onerous.

However, I fear it is at a tangent to my main point, which I will now simplify.

Why, if they had weighed the evidence and not found it compelling, did LNS and Messrs. Rae & Mure expound so few words in outlining their reasons for doing so?

    I need more clarification

“By the game I mean the 42 clubs who are members of the SFA and SPFL who would rather it just all went away and they can carry on as before.”

If you speak of the 42 owners or Boards, I can accept that, but the game is all the paying supporters of the 42 clubs and, I believe, the appetite was rather different there, otherwise Rangers, whether mark 1 or 2, would still be in the top division.

“I think fear of the social consequences is definitely a factor preventing honesty emerging and so in order to give virtue some ascendancy that fear should be removed.”

How is virtue given any ascendancy if we remove the threat of public disorder? How is the charge of appeasement avoided by giving in to this threat?

Finally, and it is a repeat, how is any reform of procedures going to remove the possibility of corrupt collusion. Even if we remove Campbell Ogilvie, who comes next? Did removal of Jim Farry move us any further forward?

If it is legitimate to punish the SFA office bearers for their failure to be appropriately disinterested and scrupulously fair, then why is it not legitimate to remove titles dishonestly won? Where is the moral hazard to prevent repetition?
