Competing with the crazies

1382

News that Hull City had a £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass accepted took the wind out of my sails this morning.  Snodgrass was one of the outstanding performers for clubs in the bottom half of the English Premier League last season, so it’s easy to understand his ticket price, despite only having a year left on his Norwich City contract.

He is a Celtic fan and has not hidden his desire to play for the club, but Hull City (good grief) are now bidding £6m for players from relegated clubs, after spending £8m on a Spurs squad filler.

This all begs the question, can we afford to compete with Hull City?  Probably, yes, but we can no more afford to splurge £14m on a couple of players than Hull, who a year ago were reporting debts close to £80m.

We’re operating in an environment where indirect competitors for players are spending unsustainable amounts of money, pretty much like Rangers did for 20 years under Sir David Murray.  For a few years after Fergus left, we played the same game as Rangers, running up millions of pounds of losses year after year, before pulling away from the edge, while they kept the pedal to the metal and careered into liquidation.

The decision not to match the Bank of Scotland money flowing into Rangers cost us trophies, and caused a great deal of dispute in the Celtic family, but story ended sweetly.  So, so, sweetly.

The crash may never hit England, but the job for Celtic is to find a way of remaining competitive in the Champions League while matching income to expenditure.

If you’re going along enjoy your day fella.

  4. It has been well known in certain circles for quite some time that there are, potentially, large oil and gas deposits in the Firth of Clyde.

I first heard about it in the early/mid 1980s.

He’s playing you for a fool.

More enjoyable if there’s no work on Mondays!

The music will be good mate.

As you say, full justice not given to the people.

Not one Brit will ever serve a day in jail. But, the world knows now the people were murdered.

It will take time in Ballymurphy too..but as in Derry, they need the support of the people outside Belfast.

Great to see that Hamilton did it’s bit yesterday.

    Sorry about that *good post*

There was always as proportion of Celtic fans that generation after generation, wouldn’t go near an Old Co game.

When new club arrive, with the same blue jerseys, peepul and pestilence, there will be Celtic fans, that will pass up the fixture.

Personally I think it’s a future game that should have been resisted by Celtic, but accede to the reasons why it hasn’t.

But as summers pass, and the time inevitably draws closer I still hold out hope that they won’t get in. If I had any influence I would make sure they didn’t.

  8. leftclicktic,

Brilliant, cheers. Good to see we are at least starting the season with a clean bill of health.

I think all of our world cup players will be hoe unscathed. Big Fraser didn’t get a game at all so shouldn’t need much rest!

    Bada,

    I think so too.

That lad definitely has it in his locker.

Domestically I want to see an all out attacking Celtic this season with, especially, attacking midfielders.

I think Biton can be one of them.

Is there anyway back for Kayal I wonder?

Very true, always great to see americans, french etc coming to derry and taking part in the bloody sunday events and march.

Saw nice tribute up in shantallow last week, some brave young men remembered. Great to see.

  12. Burghbhoy,

Glad to hear young Fr Nicky has set a good impression of us Cowiebhoys :-)

I spent some time after mass in Cowie, having a wee blether with Aiden Bhoy today, nice, he now knows who we all are ?

Right, I think Celtic are better placed for qualifiers this season, than we were last season.

Sydney Tim – Nir Biton, looks the part for taking over from big Vic ( better in possession than Vic was), I think Johansen looks better than Joe L, so better there ? Wee have both Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig who can fit into Centre Half if required, so ok there.

I have absolutely no issue in going in without Sammi, I actually believe we play more effectively without him, look at Kris Commons return playing without him, Sammi slowed us down, and far too often lost us possession, up front is interesting though, has Tony Watts attitude improved ? How will Griffiths cope in Europe ?

So I would move Balde & Boerrigter on and get a finished article to play up front, don’t know who though :-)

Oh and PS, I have no interest in Sevco, but how come they have won the league without playing, just think of the manager they have, I wouldn’t be confident of that happening, I live in hope

Our overwhelming priority personnel wise, is a fast winger. Forrest cannot be relied upon and should go if the right offer comes

Say it again Anya would do well for us and be a great out ball in Europe

While callum McGregor had a very good first half of the season ……up till new year……….am sure he struggled to get a start after Jan and in the run in……..

I would be very shocked if he made it with us…….

  19. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    Cowiebhoy,

    Hahaha.

Was just about to post about McMullan.

He certainly looks the part on any clip I have seen.

Aye it was their 40th anniversary.

Bedtime here, have a goodin chief.

    :-)

I also believe Adam Mathews could replace Forrest easily, wide right of midfield, as can Scott Brown

Nir Biton, Stefan Johansen and Liam Henderson, along with Charlie Mulgrew and Scott Brown competing for centre midfield is also ok

I would also move Beram Kayal on now, and give some more of our youths a chance

Lenny has left us Better placed by far than last year :-)

    Hail Hail

  23. Callum McGregor played 40 games for Notts County last season, scoring 14 goals from midfield – their leading scorer.

I have no idea if the bhoy will go on to have a successful career with Celtic, but he deserves his chance – just like everybody else.

    …and he’s only just turned 21.

I think he can make it.

    I hope he does.

    HH!!

  24. If brown plays he has to be wide right.. Twice the player there than in centre midfield.

Lustig is 1st choice right back

Then we have fisher and matthews. 2 very good players. Matthews can do a job right midfield aswel .

Id give forrest another season and see how he goes, dont know where reports of spurs etc want him come from. At minute he wouldnt be in my starting 11 for us.

  25. See this Forrest that cannot be relied upon?

Is it the same guy who managed 27 appearances in all competitions last season? And 29 the year before? Following on from a record high of 43 appearances and 25 the season prior to that?

124 appearances over 4 seasons is a pretty good haul for a so-called injury prone player.

We could find half a dozen fans’ favourites who could not match that.

On top of that we have 24 goals from 126 appearances in his career.

A scoring winger, eh? Let’s punt him and personally drive him to the airport, though? There’s a plan!

  26. ST thanksfor your response – so you can be an engaging poster when you like. I tend to agree with Cowiebhoy’s post. A striker is No.1 priority and let Ronnie assess the squad and hopefully promote some of the youngsters, got a good feeling about this season. Please stay away from balance sheets rants , your feelings are well known, consistant but somewhat tedious although you are certainly entitled to make them as you wish. Good conversing.
