Confederated league gathers pace as Belarus bids to join

905

The momentum for a confederated regional league in Eastern Europe continues to gather pace with clubs from Belarus keen to join.  With a population of around 10m, Belarus is sandwiched between Russia, Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states, but their league has been rendered uncompetitive by the domination of Bate Borisov, who are on their way to eight-in-a-row titles.

Bate, who are now Champions League regulars, have no opportunity to progress while the rest of the league do not have the resources to compete with them.  A regional league would solve all their problems.

Russian and Ukrainian clubs are aiming to have a confederated league in place by the start of 2014, with sponsors thought to be keen to step forward and underwrite whatever is necessary to smooth the way, but the Ukrainian FA suggest 2016 is a more viable date.

Scottish football stands to gain more from regionalisation than anywhere else on the planet. We need to have this debate before blindly stumbling into another Management of Decline while legislators in Minsk leave us behind!

Today is the last guaranteed posting date for CQN Annuals before Christmas, so if you haven’t ordered yet, this is your chance.

Many thanks for the tremendous support of the Annual in recent weeks.  We have shipped lots to Australia, Canada and USA, across various European and Asian countries, and to hundreds of towns and cities across Scotland, England and Ireland.  Even Ayrshire!

Last guaranteed date before Christmas. You can order the CQN Annual here!

My guess is that, for the Scots, approaching the EPL would be a waste of time: they have no need for us: as the world’s wealthiest league, they’ll think they don’t need to take part in any regionalisation and – for the timebeing, at least – would see such as being a dilution of their brand.

The SPL joining forces with other Celtic nations might be a go-er, but the market is fairly small and could have practical/political difficulties.

Personally, I would be interested in exploring the possibility of a combined league involving the top sides from Scandanavian and Benelux leagues.

Portugal, too, would be interesting, though I imagine they would be more interested in catching a ride with the Spanish.

  4. philvisreturns they made me sit behind one many years ago and ever since then I’ve wanted to set about them with an angle grinder.

A friend of mine who’s an engineer tells me it’s not that big a job to remove them.

Same guy once gave me a wee tour of the holding cells at Parkhead. Not a lot of people have seen those.

Such is the impeccable behaviour of us Celtic fans.

You’d be better combining Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary.

Austria and Switzerland are too rich for the others.

  6. Get all this current crop of referees out of the system and promote real referees, ones that don’t have an agenda. Let it be known that there will be a serious clampdown on any foul play an watch Scottish Football rise high again.

We have the talented players coming through, not just at Celtic but the small ones are unlikely to make it. That is just so wrong. These small lads, usually have the ability to be a number 10 or a 7, however we have been thinking we need a bigger version of those numbers than before.

Galway is incredible for lively pubs.

The Weigh Inn is central, friendly & had a good bit of singing any time I was in it.

You will enjoy what is a great town.

  8. Tallybhoy-I think if you look at the advertising Paul 67 has on the site now,it might be possible to attract advertisers to a TV Channel.

  9. Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon – What’s wrong with worshipping trees? At least trees exist.

Did you even read my zinger about Wiccans?

I’m not prejudiced against morbidly obese perma-virgins, but let’s not encourage them.

I quite like trees and animals, but man is clearly the best lifeform on the planet. Animals are food and/or sport and trees don’t even have brains.

So if we’re going to worship terrestrial life, it makes sense to worship man. And we should worship the best of men, which would be me.

You see what you’ve done? Philvis is your god now! Ahahahahahahaha! And I will smite ye with thumbsup.

CE = common era. BCE = before common era. Makes more sense than AD/ BC since no one actually knows when Jesus was born.

Since they use the same numbers I conclude there is no such thing as a “common era”, it’s just the gay version of BC and AD after all.

Atheists should man up and use the French Revolutionary Calendar and not a disguised Gregorian one. I blame that Dawkins fellow. He looks and acts like an old woman having hot flushes.

It used to be that atheists needed testicular fortitude and awesome beards but now they’re mainly peevish Guardian reading milksops of both sexes who buy fair trade handmade vegan tampons and worship the cult of climate change in place of Christianity. The only well-known God-botherer-botherer with a bit of swagger was Christopher Hitchens, and he probably doesn’t need a coat where he is now.

And a joyous Winter Solstice to you too!

I am convinced that there would be a queue of companies prepared to advertise on a Celtic TV channel broadcasting on the Sky or other platform.

    Local, national and multi-national ones.

And similarly, Scotland with Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. That federation would represent the highest per capita GDP media market in Europe.

I forget the figures but Norwegians are big TV watchers of the EPL so giving them an alternative with a home flavour is a chalenge that makes sense. If the budget airlines were to get in on the act then other SPL clubs on the east coast might want to involved too.

Makes a lot of sense and those countries are more likely to look at the idea than England.

    re. Celtic TV

back in the not too recent past when Setanta had the rights to scottish games, Celtic TV was broadcast on both Sky and NTL/Virgin. The costs to run these channels is a lot for the club to undertake. it was ok when Setanta did it as they could combine it with their regular subscriptions.

Liverpool, as far as I know, are the only UK team with a free to air dedicated TV channel. Even Man United have to charge for MUTV to make it worthwhile.

I think it is something we should be looking at but with CelticTV (online) we can still get access to anything we want at a time of our own choosing. Dedicated TV schedules are on the way out as people subscribe to the likes of Netflix and the BBC iplayer becomes more popular.

IPTV (ie tv on internet) broadcast on a TV is the way forward and I would like to see Celtic link up with Virgin or Sky to get onto their “on-demand” platforms even if we did have to pay a subscription, it might generate enough funds to make it worthwhile.

Content, however is king and while Sky/ESPN have a monoploy on games at very low money, its unlikely we will see CelticTV taking off on a big scale. If we could, however, negotiate a way out of the TV deal and sell our own games, then it would be a winner as I think people would be willing to pay Celtic extra than they would pay Sky for the privelege.

Try Rocky Sullivan’s on 28th Avenue/Lexington, watched us beat the now defunct “thems” 1-0 (Henrik) in the Scottish Cup in there. Unbeknowns to me at the time, Rod Stewart was also there. (Was 7.00 am local time, and I was still wasted from the night before).
