Conflict of interest Ogilvie

860

As newco chief executive, Derek Llambias reported to his AGM yesterday, he meets the SFA today to discuss further involvement of Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley at his club.  Ashley is nearing the end of a power-struggle between his faction, which appears to include the Easdale brothers, and pretty-much everyone else who goes to Ibrox, as well as Dave King and other worthies noticeable by their absence when the assets of oldco were to be paid for.

One of this morning’s newspapers appears to suggest SFA board member Peter Lawwell may retire from this meeting on account of him apparently having a conflict of interest, however, I believe this would be extraordinarily unlikely.  Peter is no more or less incentive to see business being conducted appropriately than anyone else.

That’s not to say there’s not a conflict of interest.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, will also attend the meeting.  Ogilvie passed his Rangers shares to his wife when he became an executive director of Hearts.  SFA Articles of Association expressly forbids a person from having an influence with one club while “directly or indirectly” being a shareholder in another without the prior written consent of the SFA.

Mr Ogilvie may have attained prior written consent of the SFA on this subject before accepting the Hearts job, but if he did, I don’t see the need to transfer his shares to a family member.  This makes Ogilvie look like a tawdry ducker and diver, wholly inappropriate to lead the Association. If I was Llambias I’d challenge Ogilvie the first moment he opened his mouth.

As I said earlier in the week, don’t get too hung up on Ashley’s shareholding.  If it proves a stumbling block he could play The Offshore Game and quickly disinvest to an entity based in the British Virgin Islands (seems to be the hot location for these types), the control of which could never be traced to him.

Those hoping the SFA will inhibit Ashley’s land-grab of retail and other rights are also likely to be disappointed.  JJB and Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan established precedent that he was able to conclude extensive trading contract with other clubs while in charge of Wigan without compromising multi-ownership principles.  Ashley can own and exploit all commercial rights of newco.

The key point Ashley will be concerned about in SFA rules is article 13. (3), which forbids persons from having “any power whatsoever to influence the management or administration of another club”.

The rules permit the SFA to grant Ashley permission to increase his shareholding but the phrase “any power whatsoever” is patently clear.  Ashley cannot appoint board members or offer loan players.

The Dear Green Place

Yesterday’s uncertainty alarmed many in Glasgow but the reality of the news brought disaster to some.  May God help each of them.

There’s always a spring in the step when news of our pal Kano arrives.  That changed when I opened the email from Carolyn yesterday to hear Martin was in Intensive Care.  We know through his time on the blog that Kano brought vigour and resolve to his life years before his illness struck.  If anyone can overcome this, it’s him.

  6. So Celtic remained silent on the cheating and accepted Newco into the the bottom tier of Scottish Football to protect smaller clubs who would loose the bigot £.

Which clubs are we talking about?

Those in the bottom tier? League2 ?League 1?

Can’t accept that because the received no Hun money previously .

So it must be SPL teams?

Which? All appear to be in rude health, DUtd, Aberdeen and Kilnarnock are virtually debt free.

To me this is about Celtic and not the other teams .

The Old Firm appears to be alive and well

    Ain’t it sickening?

We will never again have a better opportunity to expose the cheating.

We will regret this forever if we remain silent

Sadly I am beginning to believe that.

So the old excuse from PL that we were frightened of the backlash to Celtic employees is being exposed for what we thought it was at the time?

    Utter guff.

Yet again we are being taken for mugs but unlike the good old days when it was Oldco and the SFA who put the boot in , it’s our own doing the damage.

Celtic’s viewpoint on Sevco was confirmed way back by our custodian.

From that point on we should have known we would be compliant to the lie.

Auldheid. As much as I admire what you bring to CQN to say they would have to contact all the other clubs before making a statement I would again have to ask why ? Celtic are involved in the entertainment business so looking after the support should be high on there priority to say it would be to much work if true would be a shocking admission of lack of empathy with the support. As I said before there silence hangs in the air like a bad smell.Who said honesty is the best policy certainly not Celtic or Scottish football.H.H.

    ====================

I come at this from understanding and accepting that the nature of football is unlike normal business in that clubs, whilst in competition, are nevertheless dependent on each other to EXIST. In normal business put a competitor out of business and you grow by taking on their customers. In football you have no competitor to play so by damaging them, you damage yourself..

That brings in a different dynamic and it is precisely because of that dynamic that Celtic are not free to act as they choose and why they must seek agreement. Demand more than the pound of flesh and you risk damaging yourself.

I accept that because it was evidently true when I first read the concept. Where I fault Celtic is in not making that point and how it hinders their freedom to act to the wider support so that there is a better understanding of the factors at play.

It might help reduce the vacuum in which any smell hovers, although folk do have a tendency to fill any vacuum with their own idea of what i staking place. In the context of widening understanding I drew up a Celtic Serenity Prayer.

A Guide to Serene Communication (based on The Serenity Prayer)

    God grant me the serenity

    to accept the things I cannot change;

    courage to change the things I can;

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Let us distinguish between the things that are in Celtic’s sole power to fix

    From

Those that require co-operation with others outside the Celtic family to fix.

Let us distinguish between what cannot be fixed because of non cooperation by those outside the Celtic family

    From

    What requires campaigning to fix.

Let us distinguish between what Celtic are able to campaign about

    From

What they are unwilling or unable to get involved in

    And

Engage in dialogue on as to why

    And either

    Agree to disagree

    Or

Reach agreement on who should be party to

    And

Who should take the lead in any campaign for change.

    AND

Give us the wisdom and understanding to know the difference.

Celtic have a once only chance to redeem themselves in the eyes of the support. The inaugural meeting with RIFC (or whatever they are actually called) should be acknowledged as such by Celtic – there can be no second bite at that cherry.

  22. This morning I was seeing headlines in the SMSM along the lines of:

“SFA hold crunch talks with the Mike Ashley camp today”

I’ve been trying to get a report on how it went – mainly to know just how far backward the SFA bent this time.

Not a sniff this evening as far as I can see in the SMSM.

Anybody any news on the “crunch talks”?

  23. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Auldheid. I am not going to keep going at this like a gramaphone record ( do you remember them ?) all it would have taken in my opinion would have been for Celtic to be honest from the beginning and to take the supporters with them. The fact they chose not to do showed a lack of faith in the support and has sown distrust among many supporters. However, they chose not to keep us posted and now are complicit for many they will never again be trust between the board and many of the support. They have shown the only thing they care about is the queens pound I respect you and your point of view while of course believing you are being misled I will end now by wishing you a very merry Christmas. H.H.

  24. So are we all really being told to accept cheating, collusion with the authorities and a vile bigoted support, because it’s good for the game?

    Not in my name.

  25. Auldheid, BCW, others….,,

Rangers are dead. You know it. We all know it. More importantly THEY know it.

Now, there was always going to be a team on blue jumpers playing out of ibrox. No matter what division they started in, their folk would need a place to go between walks.

Some Celtic supporters are angry because Celtic didn’t make sure they were sufficiently dead.

I don’t know what degree of deadness would gave made some of you happy.

If you mean there should be NO. Team at ibrox. No team for the afflicted to follow at all….,,then where would that have left us?

What kind of league would we be in? Who would sponsor a league in which one team wins 20 in a row?

No, rangers are dead. It is more painful, more humiliating for them to be dressed up like rangers, kidding on to be rangers, having their AGM in a wee tent.

I don’t know what more you could ask for.

Enjoy yourselves. Beating yourself and your own club up is wasted energy.

Not looking for an argument – but the hype that will surround the semi final will be the straw that breaks the camels back for many supporters.

It doesn’t take much for Celtic to acknowledge that meeting for what it is – what’s the problem with that?

  29. Izzy aint perfect but he gives his all. True, some of his crosses are poor but others might be classed as good if there was more than one striker in the vicinity of the opponents box. Ronnie, this 1 up front for every game is seriously depressing.

If all players in the team had the same energy and committment as Izzy we would have little to complain about. Main culprits are VVD and Bitton.
