Consistency needed before talk of trebles

796

This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from.  It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.

Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014.  If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.

A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.

It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”.  More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.

For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.

It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end.  Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.

I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble.  We achieved this feat only three times in our history.  Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.

Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them.  On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.

Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb.  If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.

Remember the survey closes tonight!

  1. Some people trying to say Oor Paul is trying to hide that he is a Celtic fan……

Not hiding it very well in all the interviews I’ve read and heard of him….

    Hail Hail ……Paul’s a Tim.

McGinley has vowed to keep the memory alive – it could well be blue sweaters on the final day again – but also wants a Scottish flavour to the week. Do not expect that to include the team playing in kilts, however.

He is a big Celtic fan, but insists he wants to unite rather than divide a nation hosting the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1973.

On taking on Watson he states: “I’m relishing the opportunity of going against my boyhood hero. He is a guy that I really respect. He is a hard man and a fair man.”

  2. Incredible new song from an incredible band….

The Who unveil Be Lucky, their first new song in eight years

Song from their forthcoming 50th anniversary compilation refers to Daft Punk and AC/DC – and even features a Punkesque

The Who’s first song in eight years explicitly references Daft Punk and AC/DC. Be Lucky, which will appear on the band’s forthcoming 50th anniversary compilation, claims the Australian rockers and the French DJs can both help you achieve your dreams.

“You wanna climb without a safety line/ AC/DC’s gonna be fine,” Roger Daltrey sings over Pete Townshend’s guitar riffs. Elsewhere in the song, he alludes to the commercial appeal of AC/DC’s biggest song: “If you want to want to sell/ you’ve got to kiss and tell/ And you’ve got to do a cover of Highway to Hell.”

The references to AC/DC are bittersweet, coming in the week it was announced the group’s founding guitarist, Malcolm Young, was having to leave the group owing to ill health.

As for Daft Punk, they are part of a similar refrain: “You want to climb without a safety line/ Daft Punk will tell you that it’s gonna be fine.” Soon an AutoTuned voice pipes up, mimicking Daft Punk’s robo-effect.

Ultimately, the Who’s entire song should probably be understood as a response to one of Daft Punk’s dance anthems. Listeners are invited to Be Lucky instead of told to Get Lucky, with an emphasis on taking creative risks and “making [things] your own”.

Be Lucky is the closing track on Who Hits 50, a two-disc set otherwise filled with tunes like Baba O’Riley and Magic Bus. Recorded with bassist Pino Palladino, Ringo’s son Zak Starkey on drums, and keyboard-player Mick Talbot, the song is the Who’s first new material since 2006’s Endless Wire. Although Townshend and Daltrey claimed this summer that they were hoping to record a complete LP, they have not announced plans for any other releases before they hit the road on a winter tour. Daltrey previously described these concerts as “the beginning of the [group’s] long goodbye”.

Royalties from Be Lucky will reportedly benefit Teen Cancer America, a US outgrowth of Daltrey’s successful UK charity, the Teenage Cancer Trust. The rest of the anthology is out on 27 October.

It’s an interesting one which has only been touched upon as far as I remember on CQN – the cups.

Peronsally, I’ve never really given a toss about either of them for many reasons. I’ve always been confused by the opinions of others here, going on about the double and the treble, and even more so by those asserting the relevance of these cups over progress in Europe. That feckin baffles me.

We play in Scotland where we are not welcome at all.

We have no choice. Our true stage of play is Europe, whether we are slipping in competitive strength or not.

Our amibitions should NOT be diddy cups presented by the SFA.

We’ve never had a good record in the Scottish League Cup because we aren’t welcome in this country.

And when we want to compete in Europe, why would we risk our 1st team players to injury in these playschool games. As any real Celtic Supporter knows, the SFA referees give full tacit permission to any hun in a strip to kill the careers of our players with leg-breaking tackles.

The Scottish cups are a nonsense, and I’d be happy to see us withdraw from both of them every year.

I hasten to add, they are only a nonsense because of Scotland’s petty football bigotries and its determination to fight its way deeper into the quick sand. Scottish football is a fud of an entity, and has no one to blame but itself. Any nonsense about population and Engerlund’s vast TV wealth are nothing to do with it. Celtic have succeeded and vastly over-achieved despite its fudness, and for that we should be proud.

We had a chance in these recent years to try and change it for the better, but unfortunately we have been stuck with a short sighted, self-serving board with no concern for the future if is outwith their immediate financial reward. This makes our club as bad as every other failing element of Scottish football. We have supporters defending this approach, which means even we as a support are to blame as well now.

We, as Celtic, have had our chance to improve things, create a flourishing football culture, and we have just thrown it away.

So I care even less than ever about the SFA’s diddy cups, and even their league now. I want to see Celtic compete with the best in the world, which is no less than our support deserve. That’s not glory hunting. Far from it, quite the opposite even. It’s actually a total condemnation of Scottish football’s governing bodies and the current Celtic board.

  14. …..and sorry, to conclude, we have and have had board members of British Telecom on the Celtic Board. The worst example of capitalism, privatisation, incompetence and corruption gone mad, that any UK business has to offer. An absolute atrocity of a company that treats the public with total abuse, because it has inherited the power to do so from pre-privatisation. It’s a legalised robber.

Any involvement from men involved in this company on the Celtic Board should be an alarm call to Celtic supporters. Well, saying that, it seems that the treatment of our young supporters in the past 2 years is not really an issue for some here on CQN – indeed, some seem to support it. So maybe we deserve to be heading down the road that we are.

But I’m fully aware of your concerns about him, and of course, will be keeping my eyes and ears open as always. But at the moment, he should be supported for being the voice of reason in the a-hole of the west. If an agenda becomes apparent, then that is the time to deal with it. The symbolism and manoeuvres of the fannies of freemasonry are not as clever as you are giving them credit for I think. Same applies to wee Lou – he might be smart, but there’s never any doubt about what is right, and what is wrong, and Russell Brand has never yet said anything other than the right thing from what I’ve seen. He’s also the scourge of the Theosophists and Freemasons of the UK which is why he was ostracised from British Television. But their stupidity always comes back to slap them on the face, which is why he’s back here trying to open the eyes of the deluded, media-influenced middle Englanders.
