de Vries, defending corners, lessons from Darnell

478

With Logan Bailly out injured, Celtic are down to two keepers, Craig Gordon (33) and Leo Fasan (22).  That’s insufficient for the months ahead, which will see the club play eight European games, the visit of our perennial league rivals, Aberdeen later this month, as well as seeing the League Cup come to a conclusion.

So the reasoning behind Dorus de Vries (35) pitching up for a medial at Ross Hall this morning is clear.  What remains to be seen, is whether Brendan Rodgers reckons the Dutchman, whom he won promotion with at Swansea, is a safer pair of hands than Craig Gordon.

de Vries won Notting Forest supporters’ Player of the Year last season, a significant accolade for a keeper, so Stevie Woods can look forward to working with a genuine contender for first choice.

As we witnessed even against an outclassed Motherwell on Wednesday, defending corner kicks remains a problem for Celtic, which will again cost us dearly in Europe if the issue is not resolved.  How Dorus matches up in this area may well determine who gets the nod.

A word on Darnell Fisher.  He has the talent to perform more than adequately for Alan Stubbs at Rotherham, but he was judged not to have sufficient enthusiasm for getting back to do his day job, after venturing forward to assist attacks, which finished him at Celtic.

In this respect he didn’t fit the Ronny model, but the next generation of young full backs have come through having learned a lesson.

Happy Anniversary mate. Good luck to your daughter and future son-in-Law, mat they have as many happy years and more than you and Mrs. Balde.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  3. Eoghan O’Connell celebrates his 21st birthday today.

How do you celebrate your 21st ?. Easy, you play for Celtic against Inter Milan in Thomond Park where your cousin Paul is the all time favourite legend.

Eoghan would have watched Paul countless times in Thomond, today roles are reversed.

    Happy 21st Eoghan.

Firstly happy anniversary to your Mrs and good self

Now Hope all the family have a fabulous day today, with glorious sunshine for your daughters special day,

Now the speech ….. Here’s a line from mine 2 years ago for my own daughter

“And a welcome to The Rangers fans who have set in 2012 to get here” – had all the good people in hysterics :-))),

Hail Hail to the Balde family

  5. Corkcelt or any other Limerick bound Tims today, we are heading to Limerick this morning, any recommendations on good pubs pre-match preferably with music. Cheers CB

Jobo – have a great day and remember – enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink.

  7. Amazing the spin on this Walker being a cheat, and been charged of cheating has the SMSM in a tizzy, it now seems that Scott Brown is the culprit, and he shouldent have called Walker a cheat?

It wasent that long ago when an X Hun playing for Scotland was heard by the whole world calling a whole team ” a bunch of cheating B……s” and was hailed by the SMSM as a REALY stand up guy, can’t remember the X Hun players name, but I think his first name was Christian, .

    Is that an oxymoron?

  8. Jobo, best wishes and good luck to the Balde family for today. Hope the weather stays fine for you all but am sure you have that already organised :))

Last week I removed my sky package as I refuse to pay them £56 per month for tv and sports and BT separately for my broadband, by sport and line rental at £43.

I now have original bundle with Sky at £10.

I took BTTV in order to get BT Sport free and pay £10 for unlimited infinity broadband, £18.99 line rental and £4 for the obligatory kids channels.

Very happy at £42.99 for the lot.

  10. Nothing like telling it like it is, all cowboy, and no cattle.

    Below from Indi Celts.

The fairy tale that is Rangers glorious return to the Premiership in pursuit of 55 titles is tuning into a nightmare before 100 minutes of football has been played.

Sevco are finding out that just like their brush with Hector, words don’t pay bills. In 2012 of course they spray painted a memo to HMRC and the papers said everything will be fine. Those words turned out to be their last.

This year after listening to unadulterated garbage since the Cup Semi Final about how Ra Peepul have closed the gap and will over take Celtic, it has taken less than a week for the order to be set.

Sevco don”t have to worry about being up to Celtic’s level, there are 10 other Premiership teams they have to earn respect from first before they can delude themselves with us.

We are seeing he band aid on a bullet wound mentality from a team that offers the stars to its fans and when it cant deliver, merely puts them on the jersey anyway.

Barton and Kranjcar would have been top signings…. 5 years ago, but the fact that Dads Army has been assembled on Bosmans to try and dethrone the 5 in a row Champions was always going to have a shelf life.

I honestly believe that Sevco thought that every team in Scotland would naturally re appropriate from the fears of old and fall back into submission below the Ibrox outfit.

The days of fearing ‘Rangers’ are over, the Newco is fresh meat for 10 other teams trying to earn a top 6 finish alongside Celtic. Sevco are rapidly finding out, it’s not just the Tims who are ambivalent to their alleged history, no one else cares either.

Dundee FC have an amazing chance to neuter the Newco after 2 rounds of the Premiership. Already top of the table and playing at home, Dundee can keep Sevco below Celtic with a game in hand.

With Celtic playing Inter Milan in Limerick, this is the Newco’s best chance of taking a lead over Celtic. If they fail to beat Dundee they will be consigned to a debt i fail to see them overturning.

Warbo has come out in the Herald with his dodgy calculator and a bag full of bollocks. When asked of what his club can do he has first tempered expectations and then gone into the fantasy world of figures that have no place at Ibrox.

“A key word is expectation,” he said.

“If I’m with a club down south and someone has a budget of £25m – and my budget is £10m – then that’s a tough one. If their budget is £25m and mine is £18m then I think I can deal with that.”

At the moment his budget is zero. Can you deal with that Warbo?

The Magic Hat may have signed on for 3 more years but i would wager that if Sevco live that long and he remains their manager that he will not spend £10 million, £18 million or £25 million in his entire tenure.

The Shame have no money and far from being able to invest these fantasy figures from Warbo, they have to worry about the tangible threat of Dundee FC.

If they come up short it will be an interesting week in the papers. The same mouth pieces that so love Sevco will see themselves that their hollow words don’t pay the bills.

  11. Morning fellow bampots.Strange day yesterday. 3 calls /texts , within a short time telling me of 3 separate people I knew who have passed away.

One a friend since school whose mum died , in her eighties, surrounded by family. The next was a guy who during his 53 years beat cancer twice before being diagnosed ,4 years or so ago with motorneuron disease. He was fit as a fiddle , hardy boy on the park & nice as ninepence off it. An all round good sportsman and good guy. I was then told that another pal whose pretty and quiet sister (52) had died in the local hospice after a recent illness. Life deals some folk right bad hands.

For those lucky enough to be in Limerick. Sing loud , laugh loud & enjoy your day.

    Jobo.

A pleasure to catch up outside paradise last week. I hope that you , your wife and all the family have a top day. You deserve it.

In my favourite line from a poem.

“Catch the moments as they fly”

I’m off to back crap teams , slow horses and enjoy 18 holes of golf. Then to the boozer to watch the hoops with good company. Sorry for the long post. Have a good one and be nice. HH

We in the Patrick Sarsfield CSC will be holding a get together in O’Briens Bar, (formerly Magners) on Roches Street, tonight.

After the game tomorrow night join us for an evening of ballads and music, again in O’Briens with the sounds of the excellent local Ballad Group; The Limerick Men.

Above all, have a great time. Hail, Hail.

Wonder if the BBC will have another Joey watch? Maybe they could run it all day:

Joey gets up. Look at the classy way he switches off his alarm.

Joey turns on his TV. Look at the way it goes on to the channel he selected. Don’t tell me you weren’t impressed by that.

Joey goes for a dump. Top quality – just oozes out and a lovely little splash.

Joey goes on to twitter. Look how he logs on – remembers his own name. So impressive.

This guy is real quality. We are so lucky to have him up here………

  16. Jobo,

Have a wonderful day. I hope everything goes perfectly.

Eoghan, a very happy birthday young man. Keep on pushing for it.

  17. Good Morning Bhoys,

Good read Tony. Dundee sold their best player and the ref will make sure they don’t win today. I hope i am wrong and the media really do have a torrid week. For us I am gutted we are only playing a friendly after the momentum of the past few games.

Time for you to head out to the pub and leave the women to it.

Have you fixed it for the sun to shine all afternoon.

    Tony Donnelly.

I hope your mum had a great time on her birthday. 90 th birthday definitely an occasion to celebrate.

    Hail Hail.

  19. KLV –

I see it as Celtic having a free weekend prior to a massive CL play-off. Free in the sense that they won’t have to go through 90 minutes of competitive action with Scottish players trying to kick them up and down the park. Free in the sense that next Wednesday’s starting 11 can be used sparingly, or not at all, without worrying about results.

We’ll be top of the league soon enough.
