Doing lots right at Youth level

671

Delighted for the Celtic Youths, who won the Under-20 league for the fifth successive season.  Youth football is not skewed in favour of the wealthier clubs in the way first team football is.  Celtic will be able to afford better coaches and scouts, but wage levels at this age are broadly consistent across the board, so that five year stretch is an indication that we’re doing a lot of things right at development level.

Greg Dyke’s review of English football this week drew an incredible level of condemnation but it’s central thrust, how to translate 18-year-old talent into first team stars, remains a challenge.  Especially at clubs competing who recruit to compete at the very top of the European game.  Celtic chose to send many of their top Youths out on loan this season, one of the suggestions Dyke’s report made.  We’ll see how productive this proves.

The final week of the season saw the Youths need two wins, against Rangers* and Dundee United Youths to deny the boys from Sir David Murray Park snatching what would have been a significant title.  While progress has been patchy for their first team, Youths boss, Gordon Durie, has narrowed the gap at the top better than the other Murray Park coaches.  If and when they can afford to get rid of McCoist, don’t be surprised to see Durie step up, I hear he’s impressed for all the right reasons.

*occasional use of the word “Rangers”, “Airdrieoneans” or “Elvis” without the prefix “Newco” or suffix “Costello” does not infer that the original entities to bear those names are currently in existence.  Both football clubs were liquidated, Sevco Scotland changed their registered name to Rangers after administrators of the old club changed and released their name.  Clydebank changed their name to Airdrie United, and then to Airdrieoneans.

Pump it up.

Hope everyone one attending the Hootenanny this afternoon has a great day.  My chances of getting there and remaining intact is diminishing by the minute.

The Stones at Glastonbury last year is my greatest regret….

When I watched it on the telly ….I gladly would have paid a grand for a ticket and lived on bread and water for months to pay for it.

The one band I have never seen that are on my bucket list.

  5. sometimes a great day oot can be brought on despite the gods being against you……I attended the swally today, but on my way there my hearing aids packed in, not really a major problem, on a one to one basis I’m usually fine, I also considered the generation of CQNers and thought it probably would be a quiet pub (oh how wrong was I ) so after a brief chat outside with hebcelt I made my way to bar67 which was nice and quiet I chatted to a few regulars and all was well, till CQNers arrived then the music started and the decibel level went up, whats your problem with that? I hear you ask (ahem) well let me tell you, my hearing was fine until my last (of five) brain operations basically the hearing nerve was damaged I can hear but its similar to the noise you hear when underwater, and the louder it gets the worse it gets. so ironically although I have hearing issues I am more comfortable in quieter areas, I then went to the hoops bar which was every bit as noisey, so I gave up and headed to the casino in glassford street, after half an hour I was £70 up that covered my day, so taxi home new batteries in and i’m sorted…..it was so good I might do the same next weekend, avoiding mcshuills though… £3.65 a pint shocking!!!… bar67 was £2.50

    ryecatcher:

One of the reasons I got involved in the music scene was that I love going to gigs enough that I’d, like you, go hungry to see my favourite bands. The other is that of all the things I can’t do that I wish I could (and I’ve been lucky in that regard in that I’ve been able to do most of the things I really wanted to) the one that I will probably never do is stand on a stage in front of thousands of people and play my favourite songs.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I can carry a tune. Karaoke is one of the great loves of my life.

But I can’t – and I will never be able to – play an instrument to save my life. I never wanted to be good at football, or be the best actor in drama class or any of that stuff …. but music is one of the great loves of my life and I can only watch it from the sidelines.

I envy those guys everything. Going to gigs and concerts is bitter sweet for me, and I’ve loved every one but they’ve all been tempered by envy as well.

The Stones are magnificent. Watching them live now, and going back and watching the young Jagger, is awesome. The swagger, the arrogance, the sheer passion for what he does … it was there from the start. I could watch them all day.

    (And their lyrics are marvellous!)

Strangely enough getting into them more as I get older….

ryecatcher,I was crazy about the Stones in the 60´s.

To me that was there best ever period.

Never seen them live but I´ve got tickets for me & the wife tae go & see them out here in Spain.
