Dropping Gordon was ballsy, now manager has other decisions to make

730

After the defeat at Ibrox on 29 December, we anticipated changes, but the most significant decision Brendan Rodgers made was the most unexpected.  Celtic’s man of the match that day was goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, without whom the score would have been significantly worse than the 1-0 defeat.  Remarkably, he was dropped and has not played since.

The reason for this has nothing to do with Craig’s ability between the sticks, it gets to the reason we lost control of the game: how quickly and accurately we move the ball.  Despite a man of the match performance, Craig was dropped because Brendan realised our game plan can be easily dismantled if we are pedestrian in possession.

While Scott Bain is better with the ball at his feet than Craig, and Craig’s liability in this area is limited, central midfield was significantly more culpable for what went wrong at Ibrox.

Since then Callum McGregor has been restored to his normal midfield berth, Scott Brown has retained his place and Olivier Ntcham has been absent through injury, so the manager has had no major selection choices to make in this area.  Olivier is now fit and in with a chance of making his first appearance of the year in Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie, while just as we were at Ibrox, we are short at left back, where McGregor moved to fill in.

Brendan has some big decisions to make this week.  A central mid of Brown and Ntcham is not right for the football we play.  In taking the least expected decision, to drop Gordon for Bain, I hope we saw a sign that Brendan values the velocity with which we circulate the ball.

  1. Good morning CQN from a calmed down to a tornado (very windy) Garngad

So the concerted, conceited and deplorable campaign to drag Jozo into the Sevco thug gate scandal failed, it is time for our custodians to step forward in the aftermath and ban the Daily Ranger and the BBC from Celtic park.

It is disgusting what these 2 failing Hun propaganda cabal are doing to our club.

They also tried to get Ollie Burke dragged into it, Absoloutley disgusting and 100% bitter against us to the core. Total deflection and squirrel launching of the highest Orange Order.

We have go to start a cleansing of the whole Scottish game and from small acorns (banning these 2) mighty Oaks grow. Get rid of them.

Good to see a few of our injured/maimed players just a couple of games away from first team football. The thuggery against our players continues mañana with the boring hammer throwers of Perth ready to take to the field and carry out their managers instructions ( man up) feckin twat.

Tomorrow is the day that all of our efforts hit the back of the net. 5-0 to the good guys and 8IAR champions elect.

  2. I read something the other day about if we win the title this year, we could put 5 stars above our badge and 1 big one for the European Cup, obviously because we will have won 50 titles.

I know the Huns did this before they died and sevco Huns have taken it on (idiots, youse are deed) I think it would get right up their noses if we put 5 gold stars around our beloved crest and a bigger gold star below it, I also think ours would look great not to mention ours would be justified unlike Der Huns.

  14. Steve Clarke’s comment about having no worries about how he lives his life personally or professionally are intriguing.

To me it’s a thinly disguised dig at the person who called out his ‘class’. Having coached said person at Liverpool I think he might know a thing or two about it.

Following slippys comments after killie beat them and his insult this week I think Kilmarnock are going to be a very motivated team today.

Essentially this game could finish their season – but no pressure slippy…..

I said the same to my mate last night.

Clarke is having a thinly veiled dig at Sleekits private life. Having known him from their time at Liverpool.

No holding Steve Clarke back, he strikes me as someone not to be fooled with.

  18. Had a wee drink and laugh at the Hunmedia meltdown last night. Upon reflection how sad is it that we have to celebrate the SFA doing the right thing? We have become so used to their lying cheating ways that we are astonished at them being honest for once in their miserable existence!

Laugh at their cheating and embarrasment

  20. Good mid-morning friends from a pretty grey, damp and blustery East Kilbride.

One thing I’ve been meaning to get off my chest from midweek (and I appreciate that with all of the other incidents this one is well down the pecking order) but here would be a very simple, straightforward question for Craig Thomson to answer. Why, given that there wee 6 substitutions and a long stoppage for the injury to Izzy, were there just 2 minutes added? Was it perhaps because the outcome of the game wasn’t in doubt (as we had a 2 goal lead) and in terms of goal difference there was a bigger chance that we would score another rather than concede? Question 2, Craig, if the score had been 1-0 how many minutes would have been added?

    Feel better now….
