Dundee United 0-1 Celtic

940

Celtic did enough in the opening 16 minutes to put this game beyond Dundee United but only managed to score once, an excellent effort from Gary Hooper, before United tightened up and made a contest of the game.

Georgios Samaras sprung past the United defence inside the first 30 seconds and squared the ball across the six yard line but Stokes arrived a split-second late to convert. That signalled a period of relentless Celtic pressure as the home team found it impossible to get out of their own half or hodl any kind of possession.

Gary Hooper controlled a long clearlance inside the centre circle on 12 minutes before knocking the ball square to James Forrest, who had space to exploit.  Forrest drove forward before returning the pass to Hooper inside the box.  The Celtic striker turned outside Gunning before driving a shot low inside Dusan Pernis’ right had post to open the scoring.

Celtic continued to press forward with Forrest again involved in their most dangerous moves.  The young winger threaded a through ball to Anthony Stokes on the edge of the area before racing past the defensive line to meet the return pass on the volley but his shot struck Pernis.

Give-and-go football was proving effective for Celtic and on 41 minutes Cha Du-Ri played a one-two with Forrest but could not convert his shot.

Celtic were so dominant in the first half their only real concern must have been why they were not further ahead but the second half proved to be more of a contest.  Dundee United’s passing was poor all afternoon but Celtic slipped to their level, frequently succumbing to unforced errors.  The visitors were never in any trouble defensively but Neil Lennon decided to shake things up in midfield, and substituted central defender, Glenn Loovens, pulled Victor Wanyama back and brought Scott Brown into midfield.

The subsequent change, bringing Ki on for Stokes gave Celtic more athleticism and meant that the final few minutes, which are often tense when defending a one goal lead, were contested almost exclusively in the United half.  Fraser Forster had a few catches and the odd punch but had a relatively easy afternoon.

  1. So the Green Brigade are Marxist now…you have to laugh. This was tried in 1950’s America now Strathclyde’s Finest are at it.

It probably comes from the two ‘quality polis’ I saw filming the GB’s stickers last weekend in Janefield Street-I kid you not!

Anti-Fascist probably equates to Marxist in their black and white world; just look at the two-tone design on their caps.

  2. What’s wrong with Marxist?

    I enjoy all their films.

Groucho’s got the best patter but Harpo always makes me giggle.

I’m glad the GB are being linked to such comedy luminaries!

  3. Why on earth are we bothering with dissecting the Broonie conundrum this week? We won away from home and Broonie played well; there is no debate to be had.

Any balance that was upset came from Loovens injury and Victor moving back. Broonie was as good a sub as any to use. Twardzik and McGeoch are kids and not to be as trusted to defend a 1:0 lead. Paddy and Ki do not have Broonie’s defensive attributes so, from the bench selected, he was a good sub choice and we rolled on to a deserved victory.

Broonie has come on from the bench to help us twice this week. He almost got an equaliser against Atletico and he showed for the ball and took a captain’s responsibility in carrying the ball and not surrendering possession cheaply today.

Now, my favoured midfield 4 would be Forrest, Wanyama, Kayal plus either Ledley or Commons. But I rejoice that we have quality like Ki, Brown, McCourt and Sammi available as subs and youngsters like McGeoch, Twardzik and George developing nicely to challenge them.

  4. Any Dundee locals on?

I tried to get a pint in a pub near the ground called the 4J’s but it was home fans only, they said.

Now I am aware of the 3 J’s- Jam, Jute & Journalism- but what is the 4th J?

Best we could come up with was “J’oure Barred”

That is a great story lol.

I once tried to blag my way into a newly opened fancy restaurant in London which was owned by Sir Terence Conran. There was no getting in without a reservation and me and my companion had none– we just showed up at the door. To the amazement of the girl on the door the manager on duty said that we could come in provided we were out in an hour, which was fine by us.

When we sat down, the manager gut came over to us and asked me:

    ” Are you from Glasgow?”

    ” Yes” Said I

” Hello, I’m Nick” he said ” From Pretoria, South Africa”

    ” Right” I said ” I have never been, anyway I’m Jim”

” And by the looks of you, you are a Celtic Supporter” says your man

” you’d be correct” I replied somewhat shocked

” In that case, would you and your friend accept a drink on the house?”

” Certainly ” I replied ” Thank you very much. I didn’t know Terry Conran operated a guest scheme for Celtic fans!”

” He doesn’t” said the bould Nick ” But a past secretary of the Pretoria Celtic supporters Club is in charge for the evening and so the drink is on the house!”

Good guy that Nick– wonder where he is now?

    Funny true story.

Yer man Billy Fullerton from Brigton,a la Billy Boys fame, once took his flute band over to Belfast for the 12th of July many years ago.Well, the bold Billy and his merry band marched up to this street, probably near the Falls. But Billy and his followers, obviously tanked up,were advised by his fellow brethren from over here – “Under no circumstances try to walk up that street fellas.”

Billy was having none of it,”We will march wherever da feck we want to”,was his reply,”Let’s go boys!” was the shout, then Billy with his bass drum lead the band towards the street, where they were obviously not welcome.Next thing is,gunfire rang out. Some rocket on one of the roofs in the street started taking pot shots at Billy and his crew with a rifle!!

Anyway the sniper clipped several members of the band, and the rest beat a hasty retreat back down the street, tails between their legs, their bemused brethren shaking their heads, saying “What did we tell yous?”

Needless to say the bold Billy and his crew never returned to this sweet little town.

Do we really need so many banks?

Are you happy to see so many bankers getting fat bonuses?

Do you believe nurses, fireman and even policeman are paid enough, and do you think people who risk life and limb on a daily basis deserve to be paid less than glorified gamblers who trade in shares?

Lets hope all the other Celtic supporters groups join together and push the club to investigate the latest allegations from the Scotsman today. Im a big admirer of the GB, but most of the members are just young guys giving our team great backing. They wouldnt know a marxist if he came along in police uniform and filmed them. Makes me despair for this country.

great being a celtic man, a few things have happened to me like that, but in order to keep it going my granda always told me to keep it going, let them be proud to associate with us……so one day me and my pal were in Dublin, we had had a few drinks and then went to a wee italian, were merry, two old dolls were at the table next to us and we began chatting, they were well in their 70’s and auld funny Dublin wummin, anyway we had a great laugh and I went to pay the bill, was a wee bit mare merry so a decided to buy their dinner and just sneak out, we said our goodbye’s and headed off. The next night we meet the waiter who took ma money and a sizable wee tip, said that was a great gesture the wee wummin were delighted and were in about once a month and very nice, told him what my granda had told me, anyway we had a few with him and he headed off to work, went to the bar to buy another and the manager came over, all drink was free for us for the rest of the night as the bhoy from the restaurant was his brother and he told him what I had done…. downhill from there and we were very merry on the way home…ma granda was a wise man… am sure he said “there are many like us and if we can keep this spirit up we might no take over the world, but we’ll be loved all over the world” very true.

I’m very proud to say that the Celtic players were wearing a white ribbon on their shirts today in support of the White Ribbon Campaign, which is run by men working to end violence against women. Celtic announced their support of this campaign ahead of the annual (and global) “16 Days of Action to eliminate violence against women”. As someone who has been involved in this campaign for a number of years, I’m proud to say that the campaign in Glasgow has been supported by Celtic over a number of years. Rangers do not appear to have endorsed or supported this cause…

If the answer happens to be that the GB sing all the songs and make all the noise, which is what I think, then how come everyone else is so quiet? Why can they not be heard?

GB young bhoys having a sing song at parkhead, struggle to get tickets together at away games Fact.About 20 of them in front of me today loving the shite me and my mates were shouting.

  18. Couple of points to add to the discussion, apologies in advance if someone has got there first –

First half – loads of talent on show.

Some great play that deserved more than one goal.

Second half – pretty flat, GS not so inspirational.

AS should have been hooked first, cameo performance without the trademark finish.

Consequently pretty poor stuff with his ego getting a higher billing than his talent.

However well we played it was raw talent and not coaching or attitude that won the game.

GL should never have been taken off.

If you have no confidence in him for the last 20 minutes …

Why was he on the park for the first 70?

Lots of mentally tired players at the end.

Very inefficient play in many areas today.

Just what was AM thinking about for the corners?

The opposition now have a new plan …

Under pressure in your own half, struggling big time?

Boot the ball out and give CFC an attacking “shy” in your half.

Result – they will muck it up / no-one will show for the ball.

Cue moaning, pointing and a self inflicted wound as they lose the ball in their own half.

Consequently lots of work to do.

We are very wasteful with useful possession in the opposition half.

Issues for the next four weeks –

    AS – Rocket up his

He needs to know that he plays his football in the SPL not Hollywood.

SB – needs plenty of bench time.

AM – just how do Wales develop all these good FBs?

Ki – needs to get with h programme.

Added an extra dimension when he came on when he could be bothered.

JF – needs some support, did well but tired badly …

… DMcG would not have wasted the two shots at the end.

GS – good, no brilliant 45 mins, quiet in the second half.

Consequently good day at the office.

We were worth more goals but unlucky.

MIB – classy performance, his sly digs were well hidden.

Apart from the times VW was on the ball, he must be raging he never got to give a card.

DU – played some not bad stuff but in the main outclassed.

DU groundsman – must have been on holiday for two weeks.

The “surface” was goat friendly in the extreme.

  19. Lads this is just my opinion but the team should stay the way it is just now, a settled team in the last few weeks is giving us confidence and I’m afraid i do not care if brown is the captain or not he has to earn the right to get back in.

Why change a winning team it doesn’t make sense, big sammy was quiet in 2nd half but the big man is coming onto a game and teams do not know how to play against him and i for 1 do not want this team disrupted untill we start to look as if it ain’t happening in games.

As i said bhoys it only my opinion but no brown untill he earns the right to be back in this team.

I’m going to be controversial here. I love James Forrest. An outstanding young talent and our brightest star by far. A hands-down winner of out Player of the Year without doubt – but I’d drop him just now. The ideal time and I’d introduce Broonie.

    My reasons:

    1) Avoid burnout of the said talent at all costs. Remember the young Aberdeen stars of the Ferguson era. Most of them were finished in their mid 20s because they played too much football in their developing years and too much was expected of them.

    2) James was ineffectual against Atletico (in both games) and (his brilliant pass to Hooper apart for our goal) he didn’t do uch else today. Give the youngster a rest for a couple of weeks. Lull the Darnel into a false sense of security. Let them plan their tactics for Broonie and during the game introduce James at the right moment.

You see. No criticism of our top Bhoy but I think he has earned a well deserved rest for 3 weeks at least. Protect your assets. James is still developing. We shouldn’t let him think that we depend on a top performance from him week in, week out.

  24. Lads the very 1st game i went to at CP i said to someone listen to that GB in the corner what an atmosphere they create and i said without this mob CP would be like a morgue.

The players must get some lift from listening to the GB because personally these bhoys are immense and people need to back them to the hilt if the lowlife coppers wan’t to attack them.
