Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

What a hun statement that is. Here we go 4 IN A ROW girfuy

  2. “He has driven the downsizing and is responsible for the poorest Celtic team in 3 seasons and a managerial project in Ronny.”

    Correct.

And just who was responsible for the best team in the last 3 seasons and bringing in the even more inexperienced Neil lennon who had arguably a worse start but still proved to be no bad?

There will be no fucking starting in division 3 again.

If we fold again, Rangers as we know it are finished.

And this Alan is what Lawwell has been having his Lackeys do. The LoL have a lot to answer for. The first liquidation brought us together and it literally scared the shit out of Lawwell Regan et al. So they have been systematically dividing to conquer the Rangers support and send the team spinning out of control again. Fans fault no the likes of Dingwall, SoS UoF leaders all part of the Lackeys of Lawwell are at fault. The late Sandy Jardine may have been able to counter act all this shite but at this stage there is not one Ranger who has the leadership to re-unite the fans and get this once great club back to where we belong.

Perhaps this comment is a little primitive but here goes…..

Clearly Peter lawwell is a good CEO of Celtic football club in corporate terms. He has created a disaster in other areas, I.e supporter relations, quality of football etc etc.

Why do we as shareholders, season ticket holders, general supporters not press our board to ensure he delivers a product we want to see?

In short , I feel he is best placed for the role, however his targets must be re-assessed to ensure a sound future for celtic.

It looks as though we will be going with Stokes as our main striker again tomorrow.I will be glad on Tuesday when all this coming and going rumours about Celtic will finish until January. H.H.

  8. VVD is perfectly entitled to go if it’s his wish. Don’t we sell the club to potential targets these days by telling them we have a recent history of being a hunting ground for EPL clubs, therefore joining us would be good for their prospects of a move to the big time?

Read the new player we signed earlier in the week. His first press conference he’s talking about a move. So if you want to blame anyone, blame the person (s) who are attracting ‘ ‘prospects’ by selling us as a stepping stone.

Also, no one , including the manager, the board and every other Celtic player on the pitch tried harder than Virgil to pull us through that tie in Tuesday. He decides to cash in his chips and suddenly he’s shite, a traitor, a coward.

When, as a support, have we had a GOOD board?

  12. All,

I think some of you are jumping the gun on response to my earlier post. In your heart of hearts, was it really an achievement to win the last two titles, or the bare minimum you would expect?

My point was, if you are going to look to success measures to justify a point, there needs to be context. Pl cannot say “in my 11 years we’ve won 6 titles” so above average, without expecting someone to point out in years that we had actual competition, we won 4 out of 9, so below average.

Bawsman – that’s how I used to feel about this place, before insults (however subtle or dressed up) became common place.

    Bob Loblaw

It’s a moot question insofar as you won’t get an identikit environment or set of circumstances, but you might consider Jorge Nuno de Lima Pinto da Costa to have done a decent job over period time.

One of the curious things about CQN is that most posters are unaware of the exceptional background of many of our CQNers.

I can tell you for example that there are 4 guys/girls who have posted in the past 24 hours who run considerably larger businesses than Celtic. And that’s just the one’s I’ve noticed. Doubtless there are many others who keep a lower profile.

PL does a very difficult job insofar as I can think of no equivalent role where the public profile is so high, the ‘customer’ expectation is so high, and the resources and scale of business are so modest. I should point out that PL had absolutely no experience in a similar environment prior to taking on the Executive Director role in 2003 (I am specifically excluding his time as an accountant under the Kellys at Celtic)

Equally, the difference between success and failure is fag paper thin, where the width of a cross bar or an inadvertent deflection is all that separates sporting and financial success from crisis.

Most objective observers would consider that over his 10 years, PL has done pretty well. He has had some periods of outstanding success and equally some periods characterised by misjudgement – we could consider the consequences of the Mowbray appointment on the business as an example.

Neither football nor business is static, but there is a sense that Celtic – under PL – have attempted to stand still in the past year or two. We have had the resources and opportunities to continue to push on, but have elected to take a less risky path, investing only modestly and banking cash. That to my mind is a misjudgement, one that has impacted negatively on both the football team and the business.

Others will point to a divergence between the direction and attitude of the people who run the club and the people who support it. Wherever the fault lies, it needs sorted and there isn’t much evidence of effort in that regard coming from PL.

Anyway, this wasn’t supposed to be an appraisal of PL’s decade in office, merely a quick note to point out that there are many out there with the business skills and experience to run projects significantly larger than Celtic. Some of them even post here. Demanding names is a little trite and adds nothing to the discussion.

Celtics declines continues apace and defending the indefensible will not improve.

Some of his interviews recently have a whiff of bawbaggery about them but I’d rather he stuck around. Only him and mcgregor got definite pass marks from me on Tuesday.

  18. I seem to recall when Kenny Miller played for us and, after a difficult 1st season, at the start of his second season KM seemed to hit a good run of form – playing well, scoring goals – only to come out and say – “Peter(Lawwell) told me that, if I didn’t leave now, I’d find myself 6th in the pecking order of strikers.”

When Nakamura was reaching the end of his spell with us, he was asked if he’d be staying at Celtic for an extended spell Nakamura said – “I don’t know. Peter(Lawwell) hasn’t told me when I’ve to leave – yet.”

  32. bournesouprecipe on

The truly world wide Celtic fan base is indeed huge, and difficult to size accurately.

We are working our way towards the quorum because of the Legia Warsaw hammering which was a much poorer result, than the Maribor flop. There are many Celtic fans, that cannot stomach the domestic scene, and there are even season ticket holders that will now pick and choose, and who can blame them when they’ve already committed cash.

The thing about Celtic though is always about the next game and the Dundee trip just becomes so much more important. Those extra fans who turned up to swell the crowd on Tuesday, won’t go to league games, but want to hear the CL music and see the ‘big’ Celtic against European opposition.

There are Celtic fans and Celtic supporters and the chasm in number better not get bigger, starting with victory in Dundee.

  33. Strange Virgil detractors appearing from everywhere. Last year not a word, rumours that he might be going and suddenly “he is not that good after all”. Not to worry if he goes and we get a bad result he will be returned to his super hero status.
