Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

  1. JJ,

The place is infiltrated with broken records.

Same ill thought stuff day after day. Page after page. It used to depress me but now I scroll by.

Luckily there’s still a few good ‘men’ on here who can still question and criticise without making me want to buzz dignitas.

Brian McClair has no business acumen so no chance of CEO.

You are now elected as junior spokesman for the happy clappers and secretary of the Lawwell Bonus Society.

Good luck and give the green tinted spectacles a clean now and again so you can see the reality

So what you are saying basically.

Is that if I dont agree with your analysis, then im not a Celtic supporter.

Im afraid you will have to do better than that.

I seem to recall when Kenny Miller played for us and, after a difficult 1st season, at the start of his second season KM seemed to hit a good run of form – playing well, scoring goals – only to come out and say – “Peter(Lawwell) told me that, if I didn’t leave now, I’d find myself 6th in the pecking order of strikers.”

When Nakamura was reaching the end of his spell with us, he was asked if he’d be staying at Celtic for an extended spell Nakamura said – “I don’t know. Peter(Lawwell) hasn’t told me when I’ve to leave – yet.”

    Aye well…..

    ——

    Unfortunately, not true.

One of KM’s last games was away to the Pars , he missed chance after chance , cue WGS clipboard slammed onto the track , KM subbed , never to be seen again.

Nice re-write of history though …..

I think that Inverness result is filed under ‘mistakes’ at CP. and merely highlighted, naivety *see Maribor flop*

Travelling Celtic supporters are a distinct group within the wider Celtic supporter base.

However, supporter discontent is deep enough at the moment and is bound to affect travelling numbers, CP crowds will be mirrored proportionately by the group, that goes away.

It was forecast for a myriad of reasons years ago on these pages by Paul67 and others that Celtic Park would become too large, and we’d return to an assembly size.

He will turn out to be a real superstar.Be thankful we had him for a while.

I’m sure I saw you at Celtic Park.

You were wearing one of those clown hats.

  14. Quite simply if you try to plant stuff about the club which is constantly speculative and negative, then try and pass it as if a message from the masses, you must expect to be challenged and asked to provide a basis that’s it’s more than just your opinion.

The accounts are audited, published and presented to the stock market. The club’s mission statement and values are on our website. The Chairman and CEO tell us of strategy in their statement’s usually around AGMs and finance figures release. The club communicates daily through social media.

To agree with the way the club is run(whilst understanding it completely) and to love supporting Celtic through thick and thin is no crime. It’s a good thing.

I love Celtic, catch you later, off to pick a coupon or two.

To increase the share value of any product or service you have to keep the quality high.

In reducing quality you reduce share value.

    Your position is again nonsense.

Therefore there have to be other reasons not profit related for reducing the quality of the product.

Those other reasons have been given yet dismissed because they do not fit in with the non sense view you have expressed.

I would expect share price to fall not rise as a result of current situation so why create it? It simply makes no sense if share value increase is the aim.

Try looking for reasons that do make sense as well as excuses.

Reasons we can only accept where it is beyond anyone’s power to change them.

Excuses however are within the power of those responsible for their job to fix.

  18. When Paul founded thus blog ten years ago it was to provide an alternative to the anti Celtic MSM agenda ridden garbage that we are fed. Phone ins and tabloids were spinning it at will and whipping anti Celtic leadership to the extent that an eager ignorant or makcontent bunch would easily ‘buy a line’ that the board were ‘trouser ing’ the Seville cash etc. the same following booed fergus and later Brian Quinn.

Thus sure have a balanced perspective to the hyper critical media who allowed the other lot to air their ‘skydome’ and private jet glamour to all and sundry with impunity in challenged.

Today’s MSM coverage is worse than ever. The blog here sadly full of malcontents despite celtics dominance on and off the field. Despite an incredible reversal and our formal rivals back on their knees.

Malcontents will be malcontent individuals with little better In their worlds needing something or someone to kick. The blog provides for these

We lost a game on Tuesday. There you go. Other teams lose games. This constant bickering is silly. Go and spend time with people you love. Celtic will evolve – albeit slowly. If you have a lot of money you can make things change quicker. If you don’t then join together with others and use your resources to effect change. Whinging on a blog just seems to make some folk angrier about their impotence.

  21. This a hoot…grown men whinging because their business idols are being held

Not sure if you missed my questions addressed to you last night.

Do you know PL and if you do could this have an impact on your continual support of him?

Do you genuinely hold the opinion that those Celtic supporters who question or criticise some actions of our current board do so out of a vacuous existence in their lives away from Celtic and football?

I’m heading out just now but I’ll pick up any reply later.
