Europa door ajar for Celtic

3233

When we drew Maribor I wrote about their performance in last season’s Europa League, when they were eliminated by eventual winners, Sevilla.  Our man, Blaz, in Slovenia, also warned me that this was a settled team who had improved since ending Rangers’ interest in European football three years ago.

I watched Red Bull Salzburg destroy Ajax in Amsterdam last season with some sublime football, and my pal in Austria tells me not to put too much store in their 3-0 humbling by Malmo, who, apparently, rode their luck to an incredible degree.  Having said that, on the balance of probabilities, they are by far the top seed we would have chosen.

As Croatia Zagreb, Dinamo Zagreb bossed Celtic out of the Champions League play-off round in 1998, our first attempt at the tournament.  Zagreb’s stock has fallen since, so while you could make a good case to suggest we are far from ready to tackle any European team right now, this is a good draw.  They are also not Legia Warsaw, which would have been an unwelcome confrontation at this time.

So far, so good.  Then we draw a complete unknown from pot 4, who happened to eliminate Lyon in the last round.

Between now and the middle of next month Celtic have to be ready for these challenges.  We have an opportunity to progress in the Europa League, earn some badly needed coefficient points, and revenue in the second half of the season.

Bring it on.

  1. big Peter reckons that celtic are the best run club in the world

a 33% per cent drop in the fan base attending CP might suggest otherwise

but as long as he keeps spending every penny he brings in eh?

as he ignores that he only brings in money by selling our best players

A team in transition eh? why are we in transition every 20 minutes if we are so well run Pedro?

  2. Massive weekend in Irish sport. 50,000 in Croke Park for American colleges football with thousands of US visitors and good for the economy and another 50,000 in limerick this evening and a sellout 82,000 in Croke Park for tomorrows Dublin and Donegal GAA games and these are all amateur sports. Just the medicine to lift my spirits after the depression of Maribor.

  3. Afore I go off oot….

    I’ll say this…..

Celtic(Shambles)FC – will stumble along in the comforting knowledge that, whilst ‘Walter’ was clinching his 3rd ebt-tainted title in a row at Rugby Park Kilmarnock, 60k of brainwashed sheep / Celtic supporters were, doing the huddle inside CP and, the watching Celtic ‘bored’ sat chuckling at the spectacle almost to the point that they were on the verge of having a collective wet-dream…one director said to another in the directors box – “Look at all those eejits – the huns are winning 3 in a row and, look at them – doing the huddle etc….it won’t be long till our puppet Neil will go onto the pitch and tell them – “This, is just the beginning!” – 60k of dafties keeping on a rolling-up….this is priceless.”

Don’t say – ye wurny telt.

    Bye.

  4. I just wonder how many angry players were beating down PLs door when,Robbie Keane,Craig Bellamy, were being paid probably 3 times the rest of the players.

This argument is nonsense.Every team pays different wages to different players

    Absolute dross.

  5. Bournesouprecipe….

Of those players, Commons is the only one with quality about his game (all be it lacking in pace, and industry).

My own estimation is both Lennon and Strachan are able to get the very best out of Mulgrew… Something Ronny has so far failed to do. But mulgrew similar to Commons, doesn’t have the speed of legs nor the speed of thought to be a centre mid… He gets away with it for Scotland, because he is surrounded by Brown, Snodgrass and J.Morrison.

As for Ambrose, to say he was doing fine until until Ronny got hold of him… Is just nonsense. Ambrose has never ever convinced anyone of his defensive capabilities. Good on the ball at times. Takes too many risks… But ultimately rubbish defensively. This has always been the case

  6. Another question for big Pedro the spin meister

when he inherited the seat at CP how many season tickets where there and how many of that total were sold for 50 quid

how many of our nearly 40,000 are sold for less than full price? for example 50 quid

    Let’s make some assumptions here.

Cost of £37k p/wk wages for Fletcher paid as follows

Balde, Griffiths, Boerighter and Stokes (and his improved and extended contract) off the wage bill. Take the hit on the transfer fees. These 4 must be draining the club of at least £40k p/wk.

    The issues would be whether

RD wanted someone like SFletcher (or there again maybe RDs views not a consideration).

SF value for money given history of injury.

The point is that we are shedding literally tens of thousands of pounds a week on benchwarmers and assorted dross.

The problem is not the spending of money.

The problem is what’s it’s being spent on.

  8. I don’t get this second administration thingie?

It’s a new club no? How can it be a second administration?

TRFC/RIFC are new no? Should be fun an games if and when it does happen.

Anyone got the video on the fat man spitting oot the dummy at the press conference yesterday? Not a peep in the SMSM about it this AM.

Re Mulgrew your points about Ronny and is pretty speculative ?

My speculation is Mulgrew had the worst game of his Life in Warsaw and his confidence went. He hasn’t recovered since.

    squire

i very seldom agree with much of what you say but strongly agree that too much is spent on speculative prospects and squad fillers and not enough is spent on first team players

Big Pedro remarked that MON spent 40 million quid in 5 years

he also mentioned that WGS spent 38 million (in 4 years)

    MON signed 15 players

    WGS signed 38 players

I personally want more quality and less quantity

The squad fillers should be the CELTIC youngsters not folks we sign and pay high wages too.

  14. squire danaher on

As an aside to the above post re: benchwarmers.

    See just for a minute.

See how people are using the new arrivals on loan issue to beat the club.

Irrespective of who gets the blame for the three stookies who arrived in 2013 (dependent on your individual prejudices any or all of Lawwell, Lennon or Park).

Is it not EVEN SLIGHTLY a good thing that we get this year’s recruits in on a try them and see model?

Rather than get plastered with another classroom of duds?

  15. What’s required and urgently, is for RD to really bite the bullet. Forget hurt feelings, egos etc and get tough. He must know by now which players he reckons fit his plan, he must know that. Given that he does, then he must get all players who he deems as not fitting in his way and get rid of them all. It really makes sense, not just for the team but simple economics. He will then have freed up a substantial amount of money to strengthen the way he wants us to go.

I really feel RD is the way forward but the guy must and can only do that if he frees up cash and gets rid of the surplus.

    KINGLuBO

  16. Speculative….. To speculate is a future tense…. So I’m not sure in what context you mean.

My thoughts on Mulgrew, is that he is purely and simply an “o.k” player. Nothing more, nothing less.

Can do a job for the team. His limitations can be camouflaged if he plays surrounded by good players, in a good team.

In a poor / losing team, Mulgrews limitations are badly exposed.

  17. Green Man,

    Spot on.

    Maritim1980,

Is “we” CQN ? If so, I agree entirely.

Agree with your last point about fewer punts. But the punts included: Vic and Fraz. A couple of million was spent on Hoops and VVD, but we are supposed to have paid similar amounts for Pukki etc.

  20. Just Another Tim on

If Van Dijk wants to leave, let him. We don’t need people who don’t want to play for us. He’ll go the way of Wanyama & Hooper anyway.

  21. tamrabam- we all want more quality and less quantity.

How do we do achieve that because no quality players have any interest in coming here for sensible money.

In addition, the one quality player we do have has, it appears, told us he no longer wants to be here? How do we address that?

I posted the other night that I thought RD has made a rod for his own back by making C Mulgrew captain even, as was pointed out, if only until the return of Broony.

By giving a man the armband you effectively make him undroppable.

I think RD needs to look round that dressing room and figure out who is with him.

Based on their onfield demeanour and ability to adapt their game and attitude to what RD reportedly wants, if I was RD I’d be hunting Mulgrew and Stokes.

There will be no fucking starting in division 3 again.

If we fold again, Rangers as we know it are finished.

And this Alan is what Lawwell has been having his Lackeys do. The LoL have a lot to answer for. The first liquidation brought us together and it literally scared the shit out of Lawwell Regan et al. So they have been systematically dividing to conquer the Rangers support and send the team spinning out of control again. Fans fault no the likes of Dingwall, SoS UoF leaders all part of the Lackeys of Lawwell are at fault. The late Sandy Jardine may have been able to counter act all this shite but at this stage there is not one Ranger who has the leadership to re-unite the fans and get this once great club back to where we belong.

    My Kirkintilloch sources tell me

    1. Mulgrew disappointed to lose out on £100k bonus for CL qualification due to being surrounded by inferior players.

    2. Mulgrew wants away as he is not happy with Ronnys methods despite being made captain.

All the players are not 100% behind the latest Project ….Ronny Delia

Regarding Ronny I believe his approach is right, style of football, team shape, developing players…etc I hope he succeeds , however the Celtic job may be 2 or 3 levels above what he can operate at.

With the continuous downsizing we should reach Ronnys level in about 18 months. Maybe that’s the master plan.

We all have our favourites, you’ve traduced three players ‘you don’t like’ but the statistics and their status including International, suggests they are good players for Celtic, in our big club in a back water league.

I find the Efe “He’s a bombscare brigade” Ambrose the most consistently funny yet irritating, given he’s been consistently in the side under successive managers for Nigeria and Celtic

    for four years.

They are all more rubbisher than the other depending on which Celtic supporter uses his keyboard.

I mentioned four players deliberately who are all getting a hard time for varying reasons in the ‘transition’

We have no players of La Liga or Serie A class, – we have Celtic players, and ‘punting’ them only happens when someone else also thinks they are good enough.

I think Charlie had a stinker, resulted in his confidence “going” and his play is suffering.

Corkcelt. The club is now a well run club. Peter lawell has a lot to do with that

But CL planning is now the most important item in our club now

The CEO has failed at that. To bring a striker in after our CL exit and not in June is a Sackable offence

Businesses have to plan PL has failed at that and cost our club 20m He has to go
