Fulfilling potential after a move

795

One of the things you hope for when a player leaves for a richer league is that they perform well.  It reflects on whatever value you will get the next time someone leaves.  Joe Ledley has gotten off to a flier with Crystal Palace, although there is still a long way to go there, but our two big summer sales are finding it tough.

Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich.  His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league.  Norwich other two strikers have yet to get off the blocks.

Bizarrely, Norwich are flooded with expensive strikers but their fans will bemoan the fact that they don’t have a goal-scorer, which Hooper was at Celtic and van Wolfswinkel was at Utrecht, where he scored a hat-trick against Celtic, and at Sporting.  There is a good chance they will be relegated as a consequence, which will probably have them back on the hunt for a Leigh Griffiths-type striker.

Gary had his dips in form at Celtic, which included a meagre last four months of his final season, Cup Final apart, but Victor Wanyama is one of the best central midfielders we have seen at Celtic in a considerable time.  He was a solid performer for Southampton before injury side-lined him for two months.  Now back, he has a seat alongside Jos Hooiveld on the bench, due to the form of Jack Cork, one of Southampton’s many current stars.

Hooper and Wanyama were among the stars of the Celtic team last season but I suspect their new clubs’ fans are wondering what all the fuss is about.  Form is fickle.  It’s hard to tell when a career is about to turn all Liam Miller on a bright young prospect (and let’s be honest, Miller was every bit as lauded here as Hooper or Wanyama), or what consequences the new club, the move, or other distractions are having on performance.

There are also a couple of ex-Celtic goalkeepers doing a star turn in the FA Premier League, David Marshall at Cardiff and Artur Boruc at Southampon.  After dazzling in his early months Marshall sipped well down the pecking order at Celtic, who eventually offloaded him.  He was replaced as first choice by Boruc, who could claim to be the top rated keeper in Europe 8 years ago but completely lost ‘it’, before finding it again, recently.

My prediction is that Hooper, Wanyama, Balde, Boerrigter and Pukki will not fulfil their potential at their current clubs, although I considered Wanyama’s place on the list for a while.  This does not make them bad players, ‘it’ just doesn’t always happen when it should. By contrast, some players look born to play for Celtic, including Kris Commons, who does not fit the profile of top-flight English clubs but is a rare gem in the Champions League for Celtic.

Really enjoyed reading the questions to and comments about Tommy Gemmell yesterday, as did Tommy, who spent the afternoon reading CQN and was “delighted” at the response.  He’s not got a login yet but we’ll get him sorted and do a live event on the blog after we have the book out of the way.

I’m attending a meeting next Wednesday with Supporters’ Liaison Officer, John Paul Taylor.  Let me know if there are any questions you’d like raised.

Why have the huns been handled differently´from the teams that have broken the FFP rules in Italy, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Malta etc by UEFA ?

Why did Lord Nimmo under the auspisces of the aheemmmmm.. cough… cough splutter.. now defunct SPL oh how conveneite… so easily gloss over the bare faced financial fraud and rule book cheating ?

Why did the European Club Association so readily accept SEVCO´s continued but cosmetically reduced membership within their organisation considering their

    founding aims ?

Do really think that this has all been glossed over ? even with Brian Quinn in the upper echelons of the UEFA FFP without some Scottish representation imploring them not to adhere to the rule book ?

and why ? Armageddon ?? Scottish football. Comradeship methinks

Do you really believe that within that representation Celtic has no voice WHATSOEVER? has not been consulted andis too meek and worried about public disorder to comment ?

I categorically dont believe that and can only deduce that Celtic board at the very least gave their tacit approval. Looking at their subsequent behaviour since the 5 way agreement I also deduce that it seems far more likely that we were an integral part

    of the Rangers rescue.

Ahead of his Europa League return to White Heart lane with Dnipro on 27th February.

former Spurs boss Juande Ramos has hit out at his old club: “Man City sign Jesus Navas,Alvaro Negredo. They don’t look at the age of the player, they look at the performances.Spurs look at the age, thinking of a future sale. What are you chasing?Titles, or economic success?’ ”

Ramos also criticised his former players for eating at McDonalds (Daily Mail)

The SPL only changed its name. It is the same company with the same company number and to use an LNS term is most definitely continuous.

Unlike the early DOS ebts and the later EBTs on which the big tax case is based.

I appreciate the grounds for your suspicions and time will tell if they are true or not, but suspicions need to be sure of the facts before any sound judgement can be reached and there is nothing significant in the SPL name change.

  14. Just in to say….

I think that it’s well past the dining-oot on the sympathy vote for Neil, in terms of abuse and what have ye. It’s a disgrace what he’s has to put up with in this sectarian / racist backwater of a country but, I know it’s not on the same scale but, I’ve had to put up with a fair bit of ‘rough-stuff’ socially and, in the working environments in my time withoot – Celtic making me into an overnight millionare which must soften the blows a bit, I would imagine ?

Anyway, from a mangerial, coaching pov, I would get rid of him and, I’ve been saying this for a while on here. The downside for me is….since PL took over in late 2003…MON worked his ticket imho(wife unwell ?)….as soon as PL came in…MON was telling us that, after going oot the UEFA Cup to V.Real that, from here on in…Celtic fans will have to get used to operating in the slow lane in terms of player recruitment. Thing is…since MON left…it’s been the ‘PL managerial puppet show’ what with, WGS, BTM and learn on the job Neil. Point I’m tryin to make is…a lot of fans on here and elsewhere are starting to see the flaws in Neil’s stewardship but, who’ll be the next puppet ? Owen Coyle ? Malky McKay ?

A lot of the players that have been brought in by Neil and, havent played a lot have been written off as duds ? That’s unfair imho.

Brozek, Lassad, Miku, Bangura, Freddy, Balde, Pukki. Have these players ‘ever’ played in a Celtic team that makes chances ?

Ah mean, ah don’t like Stokes but, in fairness to him for example…in last weeks game – he got one chance in the entire game and put it away !!!

Indeed, in last weeks game…it took until the 74th minute until Celtic got their 2nd shot at goals ? WTF ? In a home SC tie it takes until 74 mins for the 2nd shot at goal ?

Nae wonder the above mentioned strikers don’t look good if ‘that’ is an example of the chances ratio ?

    Whose fault is that ?

Anyway…ah could fill the blog with examples of games like that but, ah canny be bothered cos it makes me no well jist thinking aboot how this glaring poor fair hardly rates a mention from this blogs own resident – Andy Roxburgh’s & Craig Broon’s ?

Anyway….from last night the post below caught my eye – not much could be added. imho

Pull yourself together and remember what celtic is about then. You don’t think celtic extends outside of the boardroom?

  18. Hi Paul67,

“Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich. His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league. It doesn’t really surprise me that Gary Hooper has struggled in the FAPL, he got great service up here from Stokes and others and was playing against much poorer defenders.

I was brought to book by comparing his level to Scott Brown.

Firstly Scott did a great job for us, secondly his poaching style meant he was more effective in Europe and got some crucial goals.

Now Gary may have been the more accomplished footballer but will not make a dent in my Celtic top ten strikers.

It shows all the more what a huge mistake it was not off-loading him in January last Season ~ Cup Final apart:-)

Think Victor will come good, Ki took a few Seasons to bed in, in England, Victors quality will shine through, no doubts.

What it means for our profit taking re- the likes of FF and VvD well…

All in all, guess the crop we exported will re-affirm in the mind of the English, shining in the SPL in no guarantee of qwalitee.

  21. Auldheid I was ruminating (thats thinking tonydonnelly) on celtic’s response to the trust further. I still agree with much of what the club has said but the overall sentiment behind the response was one of appeasement. There is a sense of oh well thats the rules so we need to follow them to the letter. NO other club does what celtic have done to the supporters.

And as we all know appeasement never works.

I think celtic’s appeasment is bourne out of celtics desire to simply make money and not really care about what else is going on. However this shortsighted and very singular approach is strangling the support. And of course its the support which generates the money for celtic.

Ergo our policy of appeasement is bourne out of our single monetary strategy. And that strategy is fatally flawed.

Neil Lennon has the biggest budget in the country by miles and a massive squad compared to other clubs. Do you really think we struggled to beat Aberdeen because of the transfer policy?

It was tactics pure and simple. Neil got it wrong unfortunately and we all have to accept that an move on.

Celtic are a club with a glass ceiling of winning trophies domestically and reaching the last 16 of the champions league without risking the future of the club. We did that last season.

For us to ever break into that last 8 we would need to spend similar amounts to the big teams from the big leagues. That would kill us like it did der huns. In the end all we can do is get through the group stages and get a skelping thanks to one of the “superclubs” like Juventus & FC Barcelona

It’s sad but thats modern football. The CL is a competition designed to keep the last 8 the usual suspects as they bring the best TV audience, which briings the best sponsorship money, which keeps Uefa rich.

Do you think that celtic fans who are deserting the club are paving the way for a zombie resurgence?

  31. NegAnon2

Robert88 no you are clearly not open to all opinions. You have a very closed mind. You mention a conspiracy about celtic being involved in all this? Tell me did you think the celtic fans were paranoid when we complained about SFA cheating? Are you not paying attention? Did you see the Charlotte stuff that the whole of scottish society including celtic ignored? You seem to think others are jealous of you? Why? Celtics silence betrays all of forefathers who put up with discrimination and sectarianism.

Im open to all opinions, I’m not closed minded.

I have stated there is no conspiracy that certain people seem to think.

Yes there are many wrong doings, I’ve read all there is too read on the matter. The cheating and the lying will not be changed and that is my point, Celtic should concentrate on what they are doing, and keep it that way and not participate in the circus. SFA wont be changed by our actions if they have done what they have thus far. Thats why Celtic are silent.

The jealousy thing is an example, don’t take it literally, many are Jealous of Celtic and would love us to be involved in the circus. It will help selling papers and give more unwarranted attention to Sevco.

  32. Neganon2

This is what I dont get.

Celtic’s policy is to make money and the way to do that is alienate the support?

I am not saying the support are not alienated or more correctly that some feel alienated, but if the object is to make money then the alienation is not deliberate and if it is costing money then they will do something about it.

Regarding appeasement I think we have to at least accept Celtic are not all powerful and a judgement is required on what fights to pick.
