Fulfilling potential after a move

795

One of the things you hope for when a player leaves for a richer league is that they perform well.  It reflects on whatever value you will get the next time someone leaves.  Joe Ledley has gotten off to a flier with Crystal Palace, although there is still a long way to go there, but our two big summer sales are finding it tough.

Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich.  His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league.  Norwich other two strikers have yet to get off the blocks.

Bizarrely, Norwich are flooded with expensive strikers but their fans will bemoan the fact that they don’t have a goal-scorer, which Hooper was at Celtic and van Wolfswinkel was at Utrecht, where he scored a hat-trick against Celtic, and at Sporting.  There is a good chance they will be relegated as a consequence, which will probably have them back on the hunt for a Leigh Griffiths-type striker.

Gary had his dips in form at Celtic, which included a meagre last four months of his final season, Cup Final apart, but Victor Wanyama is one of the best central midfielders we have seen at Celtic in a considerable time.  He was a solid performer for Southampton before injury side-lined him for two months.  Now back, he has a seat alongside Jos Hooiveld on the bench, due to the form of Jack Cork, one of Southampton’s many current stars.

Hooper and Wanyama were among the stars of the Celtic team last season but I suspect their new clubs’ fans are wondering what all the fuss is about.  Form is fickle.  It’s hard to tell when a career is about to turn all Liam Miller on a bright young prospect (and let’s be honest, Miller was every bit as lauded here as Hooper or Wanyama), or what consequences the new club, the move, or other distractions are having on performance.

There are also a couple of ex-Celtic goalkeepers doing a star turn in the FA Premier League, David Marshall at Cardiff and Artur Boruc at Southampon.  After dazzling in his early months Marshall sipped well down the pecking order at Celtic, who eventually offloaded him.  He was replaced as first choice by Boruc, who could claim to be the top rated keeper in Europe 8 years ago but completely lost ‘it’, before finding it again, recently.

My prediction is that Hooper, Wanyama, Balde, Boerrigter and Pukki will not fulfil their potential at their current clubs, although I considered Wanyama’s place on the list for a while.  This does not make them bad players, ‘it’ just doesn’t always happen when it should. By contrast, some players look born to play for Celtic, including Kris Commons, who does not fit the profile of top-flight English clubs but is a rare gem in the Champions League for Celtic.

Really enjoyed reading the questions to and comments about Tommy Gemmell yesterday, as did Tommy, who spent the afternoon reading CQN and was “delighted” at the response.  He’s not got a login yet but we’ll get him sorted and do a live event on the blog after we have the book out of the way.

I’m attending a meeting next Wednesday with Supporters’ Liaison Officer, John Paul Taylor.  Let me know if there are any questions you’d like raised.

Doc you managed fine and lasted longer than the rest richie doesnt count as its his local. Off to bed plenty of valentines joy to bring tomorrow! !!

  2. Winning captains you could expect the following.

1 an honest debate with supporters on finance and our choices on players

2 a more balanced approach to building a team rather than just making money

3 an open criticism of the OB and the behaviours surrounding it with a demand to scrap it

4 open questions on what happened during the Hun debacle and drive on modernising the SFA

5 defending supporters in allowing political opinion and creating dialogue with football authorities around why free speech is banned in Scotland but not in places like Spain.

I would still follow much of the policies of trying to spot talent but supplement it with the need to create a balanced team. I would unite the support with the other actions above. I would attract all sorts of crap from the MSM but I would treat them with the contempt they deserve and embrace internet battery to speak directly to supporters.

I believe these actions would not only be honest but would unite us and create a sense of unity. We would also change the agenda in Scotland. It might not change to what we want but it would change.

It’s really not that hard winnings. It’s simply not.

Of course for that to happen we need to get rid of the Westminster government who are quite happy to keep the most populated part of Scotland a nuclear missile target

The thing for me re the support and the issues with the board is that we need to find an issue that concerns both and is winnable, Res 12 may be that issue but things don’t happen overnight and there is an overwhelming desire among a sizable percentage of the support to take on authority(SFA/Focus?SNP) and “put them in their place” or something similar.

Some of the posters on here, that I have the greatest respect for, appear to be at odds with each other over issues where they have common ground, it’s only in the way to tackle these issues that appear to be their major dissagreement.

More talking and less……………….. well you know what I’m getting at.

There isn’t to much wrong with where we are in real terms, we just need to see something tangible happening that addresses the concerns of the support and we will have a united support.

I’m with cowiebhoy and others who are sick to death of this pish about keeping the powder dry, not interrupting our enemy, silence for fear of public unrest etc blah blah blah.

I want Celtic to grow a set of balls and stand up for what generations of Celtic supporters fought for. We pay their wages, its time they took heed of our views. The printed press despise us, radio and tv media tolerate us so who gives a shit if we upset the apple cart.

Peter Lawwells joke at the AGM while funny at the time just doesn’t cut the mustard. They had plenty to say on our support behaviour after the motherwell game and came out with a limp statement when NFL was abused at tynecastle. Do our board have a bollock between them to share?

Paul67, please ask JPT what Celtic expect to gain by remaining silent when corruption and cheating. and their apparent acceptance of it seems to be the single biggest concern among many of the die hard support.

  15. Auldheid at 20:14 Not talking about banning anyone just want those in charge to stand up for our support for a change , I don’t think it’s too much to ask tbh especially after the fir park debacle

    Neganon2,

    Really ? Ok

There was once a group of Celtic shareholders who thought their investment was being suppressed artificially low.

Well one day these intrepid shareholders decided that they would enquire about the lack of return on their investment and raised a question at the big shareholder meeting.

To their chagrin they were initially dismissed by the great power of the executive but when the big Shareholder meeting grew closer the mighty executive could no longer dismiss the Celtic shareholders fears, cause the city was watching.

Well, come the hour come the mhan and the mighty morissey stood afore the greetingfaced and declared the mighty executive had accepted the Celtic shareholders did indeed have a case and they would acquiesce to the Celtic shareholders as yet unanswered questions.

Today I have asked you neganon2 to become part of that Celtic shareholder investigation, in case you missed it,

we are investigating the competence of the SFA compliance procedures/ implementation.

We have stumbled across a few issues the might seem a bit off but some clarification and direction is always welcome, or you could just be one of us and bring yer paranoia to the next meeting, we might even let you know what we are going to talk about but you really wont go far wrong if you think its about UEFA compliance, and shareholders loses :o)

  22. As the independence debate heats up

How about a CQN poll on the independence vote where we all put our monikers and reputations on the line about how we will vote

Lets start with the heid yins

    Paul 67

    BRTH

    Winning Captains

    Me personally

I will vote with my heart and soul and honour the chance our ancestors never got with a yes vote

A yes vote will bring down the cosy political aristocracy endemic in UK politics

In fact Scottish independence will be better for the ordinary Englishman it will mean for once in their lives they can concentrate on local matters without the mirage of a past empire clouding their real status in this world.

    Vote yes vive la difference

  23. I see we have a legion of Lenny attackers on tonight…or ‘Lennon’ as they refer to him.

No doubt they are all absolutely perfect in their own occupations and never ever make a single mistake.

Aye, he’s rubbish right enough. Get someone in who will go through an entire season unbeaten and never lose a cup game. That kind of super manager must be out there somewhere. Mustn’t he?

  24. Canamalar I am intrigued. Too often I sit and moan. I have often realised that action is better. Plus I love to learn. Please send me details because my workload is pretty tough to handle. But work I do. Celtic I love.

We will not know until March but remember it is the shareholders Celtic have to answer to not the requisitioners.

    ………….

Cheers for the pointer Auldheid, I missed that. So shareholders expect to hear something in March, great.

I’d still like my question to JPT stand. I’d like the club to tell me to expect a response. I’d like them to tell the world to expect a response in March. I canny be doing with all this cloak n dagger pish. Get it out there and let the support know we are doing something on behalf of the support in the face of the corruption.

    Acgrst,

    Simple stuff,

We need the club to ask the questions, they demand confidence,

    This ones for you,

Should we tell the to go take a flying copulation at the moon ?

Or should we acquiesce and deal with it like big bhoys ?

  27. Yes vote is incredibly interesting,

Freedom of information data shows they lied about oil reserves in the seventies, because there was a referendum.

Nothing is new in the world, so its easy to imagine Cameron and Osborne lying now.

Why are they so desparate for us to stay?

Canamalar, I’m making a wild assumption that your post at 00.59 is to me?

If it is then why are you asking me two questions?

I simply want some feedback to the requisition I supported.

Auldheid pointed me to his post asserting that feedback to shareholders is expected in March. I’m good with that and await that response.

What are we acquiescing to, and being big boys has naff all to do with it..
