Fulfilling potential after a move

795

One of the things you hope for when a player leaves for a richer league is that they perform well.  It reflects on whatever value you will get the next time someone leaves.  Joe Ledley has gotten off to a flier with Crystal Palace, although there is still a long way to go there, but our two big summer sales are finding it tough.

Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich.  His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league.  Norwich other two strikers have yet to get off the blocks.

Bizarrely, Norwich are flooded with expensive strikers but their fans will bemoan the fact that they don’t have a goal-scorer, which Hooper was at Celtic and van Wolfswinkel was at Utrecht, where he scored a hat-trick against Celtic, and at Sporting.  There is a good chance they will be relegated as a consequence, which will probably have them back on the hunt for a Leigh Griffiths-type striker.

Gary had his dips in form at Celtic, which included a meagre last four months of his final season, Cup Final apart, but Victor Wanyama is one of the best central midfielders we have seen at Celtic in a considerable time.  He was a solid performer for Southampton before injury side-lined him for two months.  Now back, he has a seat alongside Jos Hooiveld on the bench, due to the form of Jack Cork, one of Southampton’s many current stars.

Hooper and Wanyama were among the stars of the Celtic team last season but I suspect their new clubs’ fans are wondering what all the fuss is about.  Form is fickle.  It’s hard to tell when a career is about to turn all Liam Miller on a bright young prospect (and let’s be honest, Miller was every bit as lauded here as Hooper or Wanyama), or what consequences the new club, the move, or other distractions are having on performance.

There are also a couple of ex-Celtic goalkeepers doing a star turn in the FA Premier League, David Marshall at Cardiff and Artur Boruc at Southampon.  After dazzling in his early months Marshall sipped well down the pecking order at Celtic, who eventually offloaded him.  He was replaced as first choice by Boruc, who could claim to be the top rated keeper in Europe 8 years ago but completely lost ‘it’, before finding it again, recently.

My prediction is that Hooper, Wanyama, Balde, Boerrigter and Pukki will not fulfil their potential at their current clubs, although I considered Wanyama’s place on the list for a while.  This does not make them bad players, ‘it’ just doesn’t always happen when it should. By contrast, some players look born to play for Celtic, including Kris Commons, who does not fit the profile of top-flight English clubs but is a rare gem in the Champions League for Celtic.

Really enjoyed reading the questions to and comments about Tommy Gemmell yesterday, as did Tommy, who spent the afternoon reading CQN and was “delighted” at the response.  He’s not got a login yet but we’ll get him sorted and do a live event on the blog after we have the book out of the way.

I’m attending a meeting next Wednesday with Supporters’ Liaison Officer, John Paul Taylor.  Let me know if there are any questions you’d like raised.

May 2013 – is this useful?

Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano have had applications for to compete in European competition next season rejected by the RFEF, but Malaga have theirs granted.

The Anchovies are facing a 12-month ban from UEFA club competition for financial irregularities, pending an appeal taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Even so, the prerequisite that all clubs competing in European need of a UEFA licence from their domestic football association has been granted to Malaga, in the case that their appeal is successful.

Clubs must apply each season for a UEFA licence from the Spanish Football Federation in order to play in the following season’s European competition, should they qualify.

One point of requirement is that all debts outstanding are settled by the previous December 31. Real Betis and Sevilla are among the notable names to have been granted a licence.

Rayo Vallecano and Espanyol have both seen applications turned down, reportedly both on the grounds that financial conditions were not satisfactory, but they may appeal the decision.

    Doc..,

No been told if I’m allowed out yet, got two things to be dealt with, dont do coffee, so if available you’ll have to suffer beer, dont need a ticket, I’ve got a new corner office that overlooks the park, as long as I dont cause too much trouble :o)

Be in the dolphin (partick) most days likley :o)

Might even take a trip over to the south side, I’ve got unfinished business there.

  3. You are living in a dream world considering Kris Commons as a star on the European front. I attended all of the games and he contributed next to nothing..excluding his wonderful goal in the qualifiers. Forrest also scored in the qualifiers and and was found wanting when the real games came along. Hooper never had the pace to trouble English Premier League teams and Wanyama is finding that you don’t have the time on the ball he got in Scotland. I still think he will come good when he sharpens up his act. Lennon’s tactics and team selections have been crucial and leave us with potential of Sevco parading the cup at Parkhead. I find it difficult to understand how Lennon, who despite being a limited player, played at a high level against world class players but still hasn’t a clue about team selection, substitutions and has left us in a position that we are no further forward than we were when we were illiminated from this season’s Champions League. Every game we have to win ..we lose. Aberdeen being the latest shambles. His allegiance to his favoured players, Samaras being the perfect example, have stifled the progress of the team. The sooner he takes his so called expertise to England the better for me.

It gives numbers but not case details, however it does show clubs have been refused a licence if the overdue payable condition to do so exists.

This condition was carried into UEFA FFP 2010 on which 2011 depended.

The Control Panel prior to 2011 became the Control Board to reflect the break even conditions and enhancements introduced from Oct 2010.

Cowiebhoy can you get a few victors that can score goals for starters :-)

What will happen if we play this new team and our match programme has history from 1872 and trophy count? Given the disconnect is getting wider if faced with that scenario what will you do?

May 2013 – even if Espanyol do finish among the European places, they are unlikely to compete in the Europa League, after the Spanish Football Federation denied them the UEFA licence, which they need in order to play European football, due to financial irregularities.

    Marrakesh Express,

Why in Gods name do Celtic fans call in and abuse our club to people who hate us?

I honestly cannae figure that out. Yes they get a wee pat on the heid…but WTF!

Don’t be fooled into believing that all those that call into those phone in’s are Celtic supporters. Some are, yes but, there are many zombies that are fully aware that the only way they can get one over us now is by impersonating us.

I’ve just read and re-read twice your post. I can’t believe my eyes and I haven’t seen one reply from the ten pages to date, yet.

Forgive me if I’ve missed your point.

Trashing 6 former Celts, 3 never Celts and 4 current Celts. Is KC supposed to be grateful for the crumbs you throw in his general direction?

It’s your business, of course, but I’ll have no part of this in future.

Sound familiar? Maybe Mr. Z could provide details.

Meanwhile, Polonia Warszawa put out a side full of reserves – without even a second goalkeeper on the bench – for the match against Pogon Szczecin, which they lost 1 – 3.

The result was without much meaning for the debt-ridden side from the Polish capital, as, even though they finished a respectable sixth in the Ekstraklasa league, they will be relegated from the division after failing to obtain a licence from the Polish football association (PZPN) due to being unable to meet financial obligations to players and the taxman.

Polonia, winners of the Ekstraklasa league in 2000, will now be relegated from top flight football.
