Full back tales, tall ones and worrying ones

129

I’m struggling to find anything viable in newspaper stories linking Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic.  He has been the outstanding left back of the last 20 years, but I don’t see the fit.  He is 26 years old, has three years left on his Arsenal contract and is currently earning three times our top salary.

Even if he was prepared to take a 50% cut in wages, Arsenal would want a significant fee – well north of anything we have paid before, remember, they paid us £24m four years ago.

Even if Celtic consider wages and such a transfer fee was right, where would this investment lead?  His value is not going to appreciate, like Edouard or Jota.  It would be money tied-up in a depreciating asset that could be used on a player that we could trade profitably on.  Then there’s his persistent injury.

Kieran makes great copy.  He is one of our own and is available, but the hard facts don’t convince.

Starting the season without Alistair Johnston is a worry.  The Canada international has been a hit from the day he made his debut in January.  An ankle injury in April limited him to only one entire 90-minute game since.  He is a player I want fully fit for the visit to Ibrox and our Champions League games in September.

  1. Playing sevco or in Europe with Ralston or Bernabie in the team gives me the fear.

The one area where I thought we had to reinforce with quality and depth was our defence. So yes, I’m getting a bit nervous by the lack of defensive additions with the season pending.

    BTW – KT? Yawn.

    “Good copy” says it all.

Good copy makes money for SMSM.

And soothes the souls of the hard of thinking.

Doesn’t deliver a single ounce of silver for Celtic.

If we are to make a impact in the CL then we may have to purchase “finished articles” in their prime but without any significant profit sell on.

I can handle that, I pay for a ST to see the best we can buy, football club first, PLC second……

  4. A transfer is obviously out of the question….a season long loan shouldn’t be …as long as KT took a significant wage cut for the year

Even at that, I’d imagine Arsenal would want a significant fee.

He’d go back there a year older and one year less on his contract.

He’d be a very expensive one season addition – and then there’s the injury record.

I received an e-mail from Superbru. Are you organising the `contest` again this season?

Agree Paulo – don’t see the sense in KT either. Would actually prefer an older Andy Robertson for LB he had a wee notion…

And re RB, I’m quietly confident that Tony R will seize his chance to re-prove his worth in AJ’s absence and give Alistair a reason to try and get his RB slot back.

    Thanks.

The father Hugh I was talking about was a Mill Hill Misdionary Father who had been abroad for many years. Last time I saw him was doing supply in Coatbridge a few years back. Sounds like the Father Hugh who has retired to Dublin.

  11. Why nothing on the official site about team news, line ups, subs, goals, if any, even the result. Nothing. Zilch, Rien…..why?

An Dun….surely saving 90k a week would be enough for them ?!!….4.7 million seems not bad for a season!

  13. Fairly quiet down Lennoxtown way.

Don’t read the red tops, so unsure what the hacks are saying.

Personally, I should like to have seen a bit more transfer activity.

Are we stronger than we were on last day of the season?

  14. AT and GGHS,

You are both talking of the same man. Fr Hugh from the Calton is a Mill Hill Missionary. He retired from Cardonald a few months ago and is now in Dublin.

    Smashing lad.

    Final year of contract.

    Now out for three months.

IMHO, it’s almost certainly never going to happen for MJ in a Celtic jersey.

This is the start of the long goodbye.
