Green: Scottish football effectively is Rangers and Celtic

910

Charles Green told TalkSport, “Scottish football effectively is Rangers and Celtic. I mean, there are many other clubs but everyone has to acknowledge that that’s a fact.”

No, no, no, no.  No.  This is not a fact, it is not even a credible opinion.  Instead it is deeply insulting to dozens of teams who conduct their business properly year after year. I have to ask, does he want this project to fail? He is effectively saying – Vote for this plan, you are irrelevant, we are all that matters and this suits our purposes.

It was this erroneous attitude which led to predictions of Armageddon this season.  Instead, the long-suffering clubs who have paid their bills, while others put money which should have gone to the tax man towards buying fooballers, are enjoying a rebirth.

Green added, “Scottish football needs Rangers back at the top and Rangers being a vital part of European football. That’s where we’re trying to get them.”

This is a great season for the SPL.  Financially responsible Hibs, who lost the Scottish Cup final to irresponsible Hearts, are top.  Celtic, with their manageable, low, debt, have just beaten Barcelona in the Champions League.  Aberdeen have their best team in years.  Attendances are up for most clubs.

Before adding, “The Old Firm is the world’s biggest derby.  That’s what world football wants, what broadcasters and sponsors wants, to see those games again.  God willing we’ll see that in the years ahead.”

“The Old Firm” is not the world’s biggest derby, it’s not even Glasgow’s biggest derby.  It doesn’t exist anymore.  As for it being “what world football wants”!  Oh dear.  World football has better things to concern itself with, and don’t bring God into it!

The authenticity of the “Rangers Football Club plc” slideshow presentation which appeared last night is not confirmed, but I hope it’s genuine. It is, literally, fantastic. Notions contained therein that provide for “colts” teams and league reconstruction which “could see Rangers progress faster through the domestic league structures” bring it into perfect alignment with the Scottish Football League plans, which earlier this week Charles Green revealed would be presented today.

I also loved the first point on the summary page, “Profitable business model using prudent assumptions”, despite no mention of future costs, or revenues, in the presentation. Nice that they have confirmed revaluations of property assets at £79m, a fraction of the value the assets were disposed for in the summer.

This will not end well.

Two teams automatically promoted from the new “second” division plus one from a play-off. So 30 per cent of teams promoted? Eh?????

Also – the 10-team “second” division. Didn’t we hear that nobody wanted a 10-team league ever again?

And a 16-team top division. That would be everybody playing each other twice. Yet we heard in the summer that Sky would only do a deal which included four O** F*** games.

Thank goodness we have an articulate voice in the midst of this insanity.

You are in my opinion now not just speaking for Celtic, but for the rest of the good in Scottish football.

As a Ross County man as you know, keep going son. We need you.

  6. Scottish football is teetering on the brink. Terminal velocity beckons. We need to have an exit strategy. The whole thing is going to be waffled into oblivion or set up to exclusively suit Bigotry Inc. Either way, the game is up. And that’s not a pun.

Is it still your contention that ‘BIGGER & BETTER BOMBS’ is the solution to the world’s over-population.

Or, that social under-achievers should ‘ end their own miserable existences’.

    If the SPL is restructured/disappears.

Does that mean that titles will not be stripped from Oldco?

Future points reductions will not happen?

The potential to recoupe prize money paid during there corrupt era dies?

I fear that ,this is why Green wants a restructure.

By the sounds of it ,he has a chance of getting his way.

    What is your opinion?

  10. So the SFL wants to reform its leagues and merge with the SPL, no doubt having a new rule book and as no-one at that point has broken any of these rules we start again, convenient or what.

If this goes through I will never set foot in another football ground.

  11. HeraldScotland @ 17.30 tonight…

“SFL clubs vote for shake-up, but without Old Firm colts

Members of the Scottish Football League today backed a proposal for radical league construction, but sidelined a suggestion that the Old Firm should be able to field “colts” teams.

They are calling for the current league structure of 12 clubs in the SPL, and 10 in three SFL divisions, to be replaced by a 16-10-16 model.

The League Cup competition would be reshaped into eight qualifying sections of four teams, but the controversial idea for Old Firm colts to be included was shelved.

Significantly, though, SFL members voted for a merger with their SPL counterparts to create one overarching body for all league football in Scotland.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir said it was time for the SPL sides to put aside self-interest and work with his members for the overall good of the game…”

Okay, not great for a first post, but my shiny new password has been burning a hole in my pocket for yonks…

In other news: dunno about the future availability of the Stadium of Light, but my Porto-supporting chum assures me that the Benfica eagle released before the match vs. Rio Ave soared majestically right out of the ground; apparently Benfica can call upon the services of 2 eagles, but this does mean that they’ve lost 50% of their available luck.

Btw, the Kelvin has always been called the Kelvin; however, in Olden Tymes it was referred to by some as the Luggie. And can I just add; that’s the kind of question that would have led to fisticuffs back in the days when the Doublet Bar ran the best quiz in town.

I’m not of the hunnite persuasion, but please feel free to defame the bejasus out of me…

Been thinking what could entice so many clubs to jump heed first into a restructure proposed by people who have already proved their integrity questionable to say the least.

    MONEY

Promises for new income streams, a disbanded spl, only one organisation and greater distribution of the wealth.

The spl clubs will have to relinquish substantial sums for distribution. TV money and possibly home gate share.

Me, I cant see the spl teams buying into a deal that cuts their income.

  14. Off topic.

    Wee word of warning bhoys.

Just had some bogus company on the phone saying that they are acting on behalf of the govt after a High Court ruling on bank charges.

They had my name, address and the first 4 digits on my card. They wanted the rest of my details, which I didn’t give and so a ‘supervisor’ came on and said that they needed this info to progress my claim. After saying that they had wasted enough of my time they hung up.

You might know other vulnerable people who may give this info out for the promise of ‘free’ money. But they will get wiped out.

    Let them know ASAP.

The guy who foned was of Asian extraction and was very convincing. I could also hear loads of others speaking to ‘clients’ in the background.

    Don’t get caught out!

  15. The first issue that needs to be addressed before restructuring the leagues is the number of senior teams. 42 clubs for a country the size of Scotland is a nonesense.

2 leagues of 14 with regional leagues below in pyramid structure. Split leagues after 26 games into either Top 8/Bottom 6 or a straight 7 and 7 and play each other again twice. 2 up/2 down and play offs. Bottom 3 in 2nd division play off with regional league winners.

Ditch the league cup, waste of time, no one is interested in it.

With the SFL proposal, would the SPL be admin’d/liquidated and fast-tracked as T’SPL?

  17. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

The theory seems to be that a 16-team top league will help young players develop. So if we’d had a 16-team league 10 years ago Michael Higdon would have turned out like Jimmy Johnstone?
