Hampden is ours!

Scottish football was waning in 2016.  In the five years before then, Celtic won all league titles, while the Scottish and League Cups each saw five different winners – nine clubs won cups across both competitions.  The ‘neutrals’ raved at this and fair play to the likes of Ross County and Hibs, (especially Hibs), but there was something missing.

Brendan Rodgers arrival gave Scottish football a team who were not just champions, but imperious champions.  18 trophies have been awarded since, 14 to Celtic.  Those neutrals (yet to meet a neutral) bemoaned a lack of competition, but you and I know the truth.  The value in even the League Cup has never been higher.

Other teams want to win it because so few sides apart from Celtic get to win anything.  Celtic want to win it because we know the historic significance of these times.  We are living in a period that 100 years from now football fans will look back at the records and marvel.  This.  Is.  History!  You and I know it and we kicked every ball.

When I think back on highlights from those 14 trophies, that magnificently-horrible League Cup win in December 2019 jumps out first.  The thought of losing our run, history denied, was such, that the eventual relief was euphoric.

Next is the game we watched from home.  We knew the run that led to the Quadruple Treble was over before the Scottish Cup Final against Hearts in 2020.  An equally horrible performance before Kristoffer Ajer blasted his deciding penalty into the net brought a feeling no less joyful than beating Newco 5-0 to win the league.

When your status is as high as Celtic’s has been since 2016, historic significance is always on the line.  This is Celtic’s gift to the rest of Scottish football.  Every competition here has an importance other countries could only dream of, and I include the often-vaunted English game.  There, their top clubs use the League (and increasingly FA) Cup as a development opportunity.

Even the second strongest team in Scotland is not robust enough to do that.  They need the League Cup.  A loss there, while miles behind in the league, would be a disaster.  February is a bit early to have only the Scottish Cup to look forward to.  Can you imagine looking at the months stretching out between February and August and thinking, ‘at most, three games in the Scottish Cup”?  They cannot walk out of Hampden on Sunday muttering, “Bigger fish to fry”, it all goes on the line.

Celtic are playing so well, some of us are disconcertingly confident.  Hatate, Kyogo, Jota and Maeda are on fire.  The back line is rock solid, and Joe Hart looks ready for anything (except a back pass).  McGregor and Mooy will move, block and pass their way through the game, while Ange will make changes that reinvigorate the second half.

Five League Cups out of six, you know the script, Celtic, Hampden is ours!

  1. Hello again all you young rebels.

Don’t know if there has been anything done behind the scenes

after a email from the mod? But so far no big ad blocking my

    screen, on we go.

Wonderful stuff watching the Celtic ghirls this morning on CTV.

My aul heart stirred watching young Jacynta giving her all for

    the bhoys ? sorry ghirls.

I suppose she should be used to picking the ball up from the

big centre back and slide rule passes to the striker, she did it

often enough when she trained with my grandson and his mate

both as always immaculate in their hoops strips on training nights.

And what about that young Chinese ghirl Lu ? wasn’t she great ?

What an opportunity for our ghirls supporting crowd to revive

    that old favourite.

🎼 Lu… Lu.. skip to my Lu

Lu.. lu..skip to my Lu..skip to my Lu my darling 🎶

    O.k I’ll get my didgeridoo 🤣

Said the very same thing on here last week , those two have previous with the celts . I must admit it s a concern on more than one count as football wise I believe we are far superior , so a leveller has been chosen in those two , watch Walsh impersonate madden and turn a blind eye to blatant foul play , free kicks in dangerous positions for nothing against us , constant slowing down of our play and of course tav pen which will be given along with red red red .we have witnessed all this before don’t expect anything different tomorrow . 3. St Tams, Trinley Brae is it’s posh Sunday name they gave it. You might know it as the High Park, which overlooks St Ninians Primary School.

Bada bing – thanks but not fit enough for the bench tomorrow! 😁🍀

Reasons to be cheerful about David Turnbull

Still only 23 years old. Comfortably one-footed. Loves to watch his teammates dribble. More mobile around the pitch than at least three of his grandparents. Contracted to 2024.

As ice cool as Kris Commons facing a goalie. Has a deadly dig at goal in him. On my list of five for the endgame shoot off.

We have a good one here. Sort the contract situation, Celtic.

    Re skip to mi Lou.

He is doing great work Mick, probably closest to the spirit of Walfrid if there was such a crude measure.superb work reintegrating our homeless into the community.a great person centred approach that assists those we exclude or isolate.

Was talking to my mate paddy bout coming over for the first 71 cup final-1-1 and the boat being full of rancid huns.no seperate boats in them days.:-)

Hope all well bout your bit Mick and that you and the bhoys are set to take part in the global huddle tomorrow.

    Enjoy Mick

  8. Calm before the storm in here? lol

Re our starting XI on Sunday

I think the majority of us can (barring unknown injuries) see the same back 4 start in front of Joe.

Most would also agree that Reo will likely start alongside our captain. The 3rd spot is were we will have differing opinions.

Likewise, we should all agree that Kyogo will start. The 2 wide spots are up for grabs.

That’s 8 starting positions that the majority would agree on; leaving 3 up for debate.

Given that Ange will regularly sub 5 of the front 6 (barring injuries to the back line), it seems likely that we will see the the 3 starters, and the 5 subs coming on, from Mooy, O’Riley, Maeda, Jota, Abada, Forrest, Oh, Iwata, Turnbull.

I’m very content at that state of play.

My hope is that Forrest and Turnbull do not start. No offence to James or David, but they are down the pecking order in my book. Good squad players to have, especially when others are injured. But not starters when the others are available, imo.

My only concern is that I’m actually looking forward to kick off…when i normally have more apprehension.

I hope the players are confident, but not complacent. Get at them from the off…set the tempo…and we should be ok.

I think Mooy has been rested for this game I’d be very surprised if he’s note in the starting 11.

    ——————————————-

Will they not be too busy marveling at a 10 year old club going for their 28th League Cup?

And wondering at them having won their 55th League Championship at the tender age of 8?

Not to mention pishing themselves laughing at the fact that all the other Scottish clubs of the time put up with such absurd claims.

*Had a wee look at that again this morning and remembered being in the Celtic end when we scored but what stuck in my mind, no matter how much Lannie I had consumed was seeing the Buzz Bomb beside wee ten thirty as he crosses it to Joe McGoals who nods it practically laterally and who is running in tae wallop it home, aye our wee road runner.

Great memories and my first time seeing it again, it was a brilliant time in my life, I had a brand new GF who had just bought me Pet Sounds, IMHO the greatest album of all time, and puts St Peppers to shame, when I got home that night my mother had just bought me Positively 4th Street by my all time musical hero Mr Zimmerman.

I had an empty today and put on a few hun skelping games and had a few cold beers.

Then turns up the 10 year old grandson from Moodiesburn feeling all down because he never got a ticket. Dont worry wee man I told him you can see us beat them in the league in April with your season ticket at paradise (I know granda but I wanted to go to the cup final). Then he cons me into buying a burger king and before the guy delivers it he is off out with his pals.

On the way out thIe door he shouts I will come here and watch the game with my cousins whilst you are at tge pub and off he goes as happy as Larry with his Royston pals.
