How to win friends and influence referee careers

875

The job of referee has a kind of inverse relationship between popularity and career progress.  Willie Collum has been at the centre of this season’s three major controversies.  He was referee on two occasions when his assistants failed to notice Celtic conceded a goal in crucial league games against Rangers and Hearts (on each occasion the ball crossed the line by inches and remained there for a small fraction of a second).

There is very little a ref can do when his assistant doesn’t flag when the ball crosses the goal line, as we all know, but Collum still suffered reputational damage from some who simply blamed him for being in charge when ‘goals’ against Celtic were not awarded by assistant referees.

It takes a brave decision for a ref to award an injury time penalty for a team losing by a goal in a cup final.  As we noted yesterday, Anthony Stokes clearly had his ankle clipped when clean through with Cammy Bell to beat on Sunday while the Kilmarnock defender never came close to the ball.  This was a foul any day of the week, but having been in charge when Celtic benefited from assistant referee decisions, Collum booked Stokes instead of awarding a penalty.

This incident was almost identical to Collum’s decision not to award Celtic a penalty in the infamous game away to Hamilton Accies in 2011.  With five minutes of the game remaining Niall McGinn was tripped inside the box but Collum booked the player.

The offside rule was subject to a new and unique interpretation that day.  Hamilton ‘scored’ from a set piece with a player alone inside the six yard box who jumped over the ball.  He was in an offside position by several yards and stood in front of Fraser Forster before allowing the ball to pass under him.  Collum also sent off James Forrest for blocking a clearance in an incident which caused a Hamilton player to kick his boot.

All of this followed the infamous incident at Celtic Park when despite looking the other way, Collum awarded Rangers a penalty when Kirk Broadfoot stumbled in the vicinity of Daniel Majstorovic.

Without enjoying the light of robust critical analysis of refereeing decisions that happens in most other countries I’m not sure where we go with any of this.  Celtic Quick News called both ‘goal’ incidents against Rangers and Hearts as assistant referee mistakes so it is only appropriate we record Mr Collum’s significant mistakes when refereeing Celtic, while we ponder the formula for career progression among Scotland’s referees.

I know we covered the issue of Duff and Phelps needing to talk-up any possibility of nullifying Ticketus ownership of future season tickets, Craig Whyte’s security over Ibrox of HMRC being prepared to accept a few pennies in the pound (before HMRC issued a rare statement about the important of paying your tax, “football club or not”), so apologies for repeating myself, but….

Duff and Phelps have agreed no deal with HMRC.  Ticketus retain ownership of future season tickets and the recent court challenge appears to offer little threat, while Craig Whyte retains his security.  In addition, Duff and Phelps have received no offer for Rangers with terms which are within their control.

So, apart from having no offers they can accept, no stadium to sell, no control over future season ticket sales, no agreement with HMRC and having absolutely no idea what they will do when player contracts revert to their full value on 1 June, Duff and Phelps job is pretty easy.

Right now they need to keep all their plates in the air. The very least we should do is cut them some slack as they endeavour to work the angles.

  4. As Celtic fans we can hardly call for the huns to be punished and then complain if others are not brought to account for any wrong doing

As other have said – if CFC are guilty then we have to be punished too

We have to have the rules upheld – without fear or favour

I have no doubt we will haave played by the rules

We should want all law breakers punished not just the huns!

“In fact, one of the most uplifting things about the result has been the goodwill and dignity with which Celtic fans have reacted to Kilmarnock’s win, despite it ending their hopes of a treble.

That mature approach augurs well for the future of our footballing landscape which could be changing dramatically with the situation Rangers are in.”

A wee bit disappointed with the report on Ch4,

thought there was an issue with the report structure and segregation of charges.

Had the report even followed the issues chronologically, they would have seperated easier, I had different questions for regan,

not happy that the two contracts issue was not raised with him,

    This issue a stand alone.

Why the sfa are abdicating responsibility for investigation of this issue.

When the spl investigation is complete the sfa will be proven to have been complicit, so how can they claim appealant authority status, their conduct throughout this episode has been shameful, the national disgrace is becoming visible, keep the light shinning.

Just watched the C4 item (ta Sparkleghirl). Gobsmacked at McLeish saying this is Scottish footballs problem. Er….. no brother Henry, this is R@ngers problem, and R@ngers have CREATED a problem for Scottish football. Erse.

Very disappointed the treble has gone but I’m over it already.

Still very happy the league’s coming home and we have a great chance to add the Scottish Cup.

Would love to pump the filth this weekend but I’d settle for one nil with a McCulloch o.g.

  11. Lads I’m sorry to keep going on about this, the only option we have is to boycott away grounds and bankrupt other clubs.

Can you honestly believe we can trust any of them.

I’m going to say if Huns get away with cheating them I’m sorry but I’m finished, why is their rules in place if they ain’t going to be used.

If it is a guilty verdict for Rangers in the big tax case surely the man at the helm at the time Sir Minty Moonbeam will lose his knighthood and could also be jailed for his businesses tax evasion ? H.H..

Just watched the CH 4 feature on Rankers.

Depending on your preferred outcome (and mine is that we get entry to a new league) , I believe today’s publicity to be good for us :

    – it highlights to a bigger wider audience the fundamental ineptitude within Scottish Football

    – it prolongs the agony for Rankers & makes them even less sellable

    – if others clubs are involved this casts further negative publicity on the league

    – if the other 10 clubs have meetings and exclude us, it could be seen as anti competitive.

So, where might it leave us …

IMHO it gives us a very strong case to move on to a new league citing a lack of governance and anti competitive practices – if we are prepared for the fight , IMHO the courts will back us.

I don’t think there’s any mileage for CH4 news in an all out attack. They will build on the story I’m sure.

As for the letters to the clubs from the SFA. I think it’s likely to be a preemptive move as UEFA will want to see the same details. Look honest we CAN govern ourselves in a professional manner. Sort of…. :)

  18. Saint Stivs, 20:06, Tiny Tim

The rules for broadcast journalism are much more stringent than for print, and the burden of proof much greater.

There were things in Alex Thomson’s blogs that you would not bat an eye at but which had to come out on legal advice.

So the positives from tonight’s programme are that it was a national broadcaster which touched on the main issues – Murray, two contracts and the SFA letting them away with it.

It will take a while to drill down and expose the who and the how but as mentioned above, we have seen in the space of a week or so, the Quiet Man Ogilvie emerge blinking into the light, where his position has quickly started to crumble.

All we can do is keep on keeping on

At the last French presidential election Le Pen (FN) beat the PS (Socialists) into third place. I think he got more than 25% in the final run-off with Sarkozy.

  25. Re the C4 piece. It was fine, not news to us but news to plenty of people I’m sure. Probably as much as you can fit into a 5min news spot. I think there maybe more to come as he spoke before about talking to UEFA and another interview.

So my guess is he may try and get them to talk about contract issues to accompany whatever else he has.

My third article on Rangers story (Rangersgate???) has just gone up on Left Foot Forward a popular left(ish) political blog. It was submitted a couple of days ago so maybe misses a few recent bits-n-bobs (C4news @Alextomo Damn You!!!).

    “underachieving, under-performing and under-funded”

And that was just his career as First Minister!

  28. huns fc- love the queen but wont pay her on

I think theres alot of stuff being hidden from us by the SFA, SPL and the cheats still to come out, I have no doubts that there Is/always has been this mob running together hand In hand, the more that there pressured the better chance of it coming out, It only takes one man to crumble and the panic will set In for the rest. It’s going to be massive for us in the long run, It could guarantee us having to be moved out of this league as theres proof of bias, I will be amazed If our board havent got there house In order to attack when it all does fall down. Apart from that, Killie better do us a favour saturday and take points of the c*nt McCall so we can party Sunday, we 100% need to win just to keep that scum down in the gutter where they belong, any result In there favour will be treated by them as some sort of we are the people victory, give nothing and take everything.

  29. The CH4 piece was a rehash of what we already know, and I know people have already said that on here.

My worry is if we are relying on Hugh Adams to be the principal witness, he looked unwell and would be a disaster in any witness box, SDM`s legal team would frazzle him.

The retrospective leter to all clubs is another hoped for escape route for that lot and will be used as a ” everybody was doing it” excuse. We need a forensic mind on this and a planned campaign. The clock is ticking for their plans for European income over the next few seasons and they need a quick resolution, hence all the BS about mystery bids etc..

Their PR is working overtime , calling in favours from the brotherhood in the media and in politics but still they cannot do anything other than try to blame CW for everything…..that plan will soon run out of steam hopefully.

We could still turn round a bad week for us by firstly humping them on Sunday and then delivering concrete evidence of the dual contracts. I live in hope.
