Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the Champions League second qualifying round with the first leg taking place on either 15or 16 July. Celtic are provisionally at home for the first let – but don’t book your flights until arrangements have been confirmed.
KR beat Glentoran 3-0 on aggregate in last season’s Europa League qualifying campaign before losing 1-3 home and away to Standard Liege. The Icelandic season continues throughout the summer, KR played a league game yesterday and have another three competitive games before meeting Celtic. Nine games into the league campaign they are three points off the pace.
From what I can tell, it looks like they have a grass pitch at their 3300 capacity stadium, which removes the big complaint from last season’s qualifiers.
This is a good tie for Celtic, who will be physically stretched by a mid-season team, but we’ll be strong favourites.
We were last in competitive action in Iceland against Valur in 1975, when a 0-2 win out there preceded a 7-0 victory at Celtic Park.

Been busy this evening trying to sort out a guest appearance on the blog from Johannes Edvaldsson. Hopefully will have this sorted over the next day or so and then will let you know re the format – it might be that we bring Shuggie onto the blog as per the Lisbon Lions or we may get questions in advance and get these answered, then post the lot together. Dunno what can be agreed yet.

Celtic will wait for signings

Ronny Deila: Determined to keep key players
Manager Ronny Deila does not expect any new Celtic signings before his first game in charge and is more concerned with keeping his best players.
The Norwegian is already aware of the constant transfer speculation that surrounds the Scottish champions after succeeding Neil Lennon as Celtic boss just a few weeks ago.
Celtic are holding talks with Sunderland goalkeeper Fraser Forster, but Deila warned fans not to expect any recruits ahead of his first competitive game, a mid-July meeting with KR Reykjavik in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
Asked about new arrivals before his first game, Deila said: “I don’t think that will be possible.
“We have just been starting there. I’m used to people coming up with a lot of names but I haven’t read the papers so I don’t know the names.
“We are going to get the squad better in time. We have to be prepared and look around us and find the best players for Celtic. That will take some time.”
Goalkeeper Fraser Forster and centre-back Vigil van Dijk have been linked with moves abroad, but Deila is determined to hold onto players who performed well in the Champions League.
“I haven’t seen so much on the budget yet but I think everyone at the club knows what kind of task is in front of us and what we need,” he said.
“The most important thing is to keep the players. We know this team has got into the Champions League before and done well in the league, so that’s a good confidence from me and for everybody. It’s a good start.”
Reports have suggested that Celtic are pursuing Sheffield United midfielder Stefan Scougall – who played under Hoops assistant John Collins at Livingston – and United States midfielder Mikkel Diskerud, a transfer target for Deila during his time at Stromsgodset.
“That’s just rumours. We don’t comment on names now. We have to see what we need and take it from there,” said the Bhoys boss.
But free agent Gordon has discussing a possible deal with Celtic after finally regaining fitness after a long-term knee injury.
“There’s a process going on,” Deila said.
“Of course we know that Craig has been a fantastic goalkeeper. He has struggled a lot with injuries in the last two years. We will see if things can happen but there is still a process.”
A possible question for Johannes.
What did it feel like scoring the equaliser against what was Rangers in the 1978 league cup final and seeing their fans scarves all come down while they giving it one of their charming ditties?
Big Roy did the same the previous year in a 2 2 game at brox.I
