Indiscipline could determine Champions League outcome

918

Here is a prediction for you, Wednesday’s Champions League game at Celtic Park will not end with 22 players on the field.  Spartak and Celtic are both enduring awful form at the moment but with different characteristics.  The accusation against Celtic (valid or otherwise) is that they have failed to apply themselves sufficiently to overcome opponents.  Spartak, on the other hand, stand accused of indiscipline.

Zenit drove the proverbial horse and cart through their midfield on Friday night.  Two goals were conceded to players who carried the ball to the edge of the area and shot unchallenged, but Spartak went down running, kicking, heading, kicking and kicking.  Their failure is clearly not a lack of desire.  Celtic can use this indiscipline to their advantage.  Know to expect late or illegal challenges but don’t rise to the bait.

An hour into the corresponding game in Moscow Spartak were 2-1 ahead having lost 3-2 to two late goals in the Camp Nou in the previous game.  At that point Spartak were in the box seat to qualify for the knockout stage.  A professional foul on Gary Hooper destroyed that position as they were reduced to 10 men and Celtic thundered back to win the game.  One momentary lapse in discipline on Wednesday night could cost either team.

The CQN Annual, the perfect Christmas present, is available here

The loss of two goals through the middle on Friday will hopefully give interim coach, Valery Karpin, cause for confusion.  Celtic destroyed Spartak on the wings in Moscow, something we would expect them to tactically adjust for on Wednesday, but this recent loss might have them pondering which defensive frailty to concentrate on.

Aiden McGeady made his first team return as a second half substitute after a six week injury lay off.  He is a player who will be as much at home as any of the rest of us on Wednesday so I’d prefer he missed out on this occasion.

Maybe the huns are like Kevin Costner in that film where he’s a ghost but he diznae realise he’s deid.

or was Patrick Swayze :) Auldheid of the movie police.

  2. Tallybhoy-I posted similar but Green won’t officially refuse tickets to ensure half the gate money,I hope Utd make it a fiver a ticket, packed house and probably less money for Sevco.

  3. I don’t think Hooper is a £10m player but neither did I think that Adam was worth that to Liverpool or that Flo was worth £12m to the huns.

However, as we know the value of any individual in today’s inflated transfer market is determined by the need and desire of the purchaser.

In that climate we should be looking for at least that amount.

  4. Hoops is a quality player, he has not been playing well of late but form is transient, class is permanent. I hope he stays but if there is decent money available and he is reluctant to sign new contract then he has to go. Maybe Lenny might ring Paul Lambert and suggest a trade for Darren Bent. Not sure what kind of money he is on probably out of our range.

Is this the usual standard on rm….

The draws been made and of course there are some naturally fierce reactions and already talk of boycotts. I understand this but let me tell you this. If we go head with a boycott it will only fuel them to fill the stadium on their own or as near as damn it.

Go and support the team and if some of you feel too strongly to do that then fine. However IMHO a boycott will not work. It will leave us paying a cup tie in a very hostile environment.

********Players thrive on the crowd so no Gers fans there will not make a difference.***** LOL…….But will hurt that little c*^¥ in the pocket. (I edited the word ….. Only on rm would that type of language be permitted) ……

I always suspected you of being Barry Norman.

  7. We are advised on numerous occassions to avoid reading the daily ranger, and in most cases quite rightly so to, but then someone goes and prints a whole diatribe of pure puss on CQN straight from that rag, yes, I know I don’t have to read it but why plaster it all over CQN!!!

    Evening Bhoys .

As I look from afar in great anticipation of another magical European occasion at Celtic Park I take time to air my sympathies to the frustrations of the regular attendees of Paradise . As people whom have parted with their hard earned cash for season books ,admission fees and other expenses they have witnessed a disappointing domestic campaign especially at CP. I have read of the fans mis-givings on blogs such as this and also heard more of the same from family and friends .

As someone who prouds himself as to never have been a dissenting voice where Celtic are concerned ,I find myself asking how I would feel if I had shelled out Hundreds of pounds only to be re-paid in such a paltry way i.e. seven goals in seven home league matches is hardly enthralling stuff .

The big picture I realise is very different whereas we are within touching distance of the last 16 of the CL ,failing that we are guaranteed European action in the new year and most importantly our greatest rivals have ceased to exist . From where I am sitting the garden looks very rosy ,but then again I am sitting in my Channel Island tax haven (thats a myth btw ,dont believe everything that the Daily Mail tells you ) .

So on Wednesday evening which I hope will be a wonderful occasion in which we retain our place amongst the European elite my thoughts will be with the Bhoys and Ghirls who have experienced some un-expected disappointments this season .

This one is for you . You Thoroughly Deserve It.

Paul67 – I received my CQN annual today.

I am impressed at both the quality and the amount of content, and all for a mere tenner.

You, sir, are the Celtic family’s answer to Charles Foster Kane. But in a good way. (thumbsup)

    Fantastic news.

I had similarly good news in my own family over the weekend. I’m going to be an uncle again. (thumbsup)

  16. Well Bada Bing, that rules him out then.

Just wondering if the SFL Clubs row in with SPL proposals where will that leave Chuck, he says he is not joining so I reckon the Highland League might be his next resort. Wasn’t the final day for application for his Shares supposed to be tomorrow, with cheques etc to be in by Dec 17. I had my cheque ready to send, totally confident I would double or treble my investment by Christmas. Drat I’m going to have to cut back on Christmas spending now as I was banking on the Sevco bonanza.

Thanks for the info, if he wants away let him go. He”ll be lucky to ever play in the Champions League again. Get a good price for him and find a young hungry replacement. Or just play Tonly Watt.

  22. Prediction-Jabba will crash and burn at Sevco, and will be unveiled as The Sun’s new signing at the start of next season.

  23. philvisreturns on

!!Bada Bing!! – Has this Jabba / Secvo rumour been confirmed yet?

It would be a strange move IMO. Sevco don’t need to hire somebody to get the Scottish press to cover for them, and it’s not as if they have lots of excess cash to throw around at new employees. (thumbsup)
