Indiscipline could determine Champions League outcome

918

Here is a prediction for you, Wednesday’s Champions League game at Celtic Park will not end with 22 players on the field.  Spartak and Celtic are both enduring awful form at the moment but with different characteristics.  The accusation against Celtic (valid or otherwise) is that they have failed to apply themselves sufficiently to overcome opponents.  Spartak, on the other hand, stand accused of indiscipline.

Zenit drove the proverbial horse and cart through their midfield on Friday night.  Two goals were conceded to players who carried the ball to the edge of the area and shot unchallenged, but Spartak went down running, kicking, heading, kicking and kicking.  Their failure is clearly not a lack of desire.  Celtic can use this indiscipline to their advantage.  Know to expect late or illegal challenges but don’t rise to the bait.

An hour into the corresponding game in Moscow Spartak were 2-1 ahead having lost 3-2 to two late goals in the Camp Nou in the previous game.  At that point Spartak were in the box seat to qualify for the knockout stage.  A professional foul on Gary Hooper destroyed that position as they were reduced to 10 men and Celtic thundered back to win the game.  One momentary lapse in discipline on Wednesday night could cost either team.

The CQN Annual, the perfect Christmas present, is available here

The loss of two goals through the middle on Friday will hopefully give interim coach, Valery Karpin, cause for confusion.  Celtic destroyed Spartak on the wings in Moscow, something we would expect them to tactically adjust for on Wednesday, but this recent loss might have them pondering which defensive frailty to concentrate on.

Aiden McGeady made his first team return as a second half substitute after a six week injury lay off.  He is a player who will be as much at home as any of the rest of us on Wednesday so I’d prefer he missed out on this occasion.

Probably too busy counting all their money, then again some pretty strict regulations around company floatations :o) it’s highly unlikely anything is untoward, must just be a wee bitty confusion by them Londoners, they seem to be confused about who the people are, innit :o)

    ‘weejoe,

We’ve been getting told since the decision was published that the judgement could no be overturned.’

    That’s incorrect.

Anyone who knows anything about the subject is aware that the decision could be appealed.

Many pointed out that an FTT decision wasn’t binding and it would suit HMRC’s purposes for the the case to go to appeal so that the result would be binding on future FTT tribunals.

  5. Just dropped in to say…

We’ll win the morra night for 1 reason – The Green Brigade will be back !

If…..on the other hand….we get put out….the season will be

downhill from here on in ! imo

Furthermore….given the freakish nature of this season…i wouldn’t be the

least bit surprised if – Celtic win hee haw this season !

What folk have to remember is…this current crop of Celtic players seem to

know no bounds in terms of – the depths that they will plumb !

    Only saying…

    P.S. Traynor – no comment.

  6. Calamara, I’ve read most of what’s been written since the FTTT result was announced and don’t get that message at all. Some knowledgeable guys reckon that the HMRC appeal is not a given but they definitely have the option.

  7. favourite uncle, may I echo your sentiment?

Us proles cope better in lengthy, biting recessions with a new royal baby to go ga-ga over.

Asked if he was expecting to have to pay back his EBT loan, Ogilvie replied “That’s a matter entirely between myself and the trust. That’s purely a personal matter. I was open at the outset. Had it not been for the football background I wouldn’t even have been answering these questions and I wouldn’t expect to ask you a question about your personal financial arrangements.”

Gifts and bungs …they are different. You just keep them and hope the taxman never finds out.

Paying tax, or not paying tax, has a massive impact on the team you may, or may not be able to, put on the field.

It also has a massive impact on society if you are a habitual corporate tax dodger.

Tony Watt has much more to offer than Hooper.

    Ernie…,

Not at all pal, just about everyone said it was over when the decision was made public.

It took quite a few days for many to get over the initial propaganda barrage, including yourself. The general consensus was the FTTT judgement could no be overturned, only details and minor points.

In fact today is the first I’ve actually seen it discussed, if you can remember and point me in the right direction of it being identified before, I’d happily sit doon corrected.

I don’t blame CO for taking the EBT fair play if my employer offered me £95k loan that didn’t need repaying I’d fill my boots.

If the Taxman then said it was Ok I’d be cockahoop…

What I wouldn’t then do is promote myself as a paragon of virtue and seek high office and leadership of my industry.

I’d either return the dough and further my career ambitions or Id keep the money and accept I was a fly man.

Oh yeah ? Well, that went well then, eh ?

CP was 50k empty seats on saturday ?

Hugh Keevins was banned from CP for alluding to a – fall in attendance figures. Amongst other things.

The question is – Is there someone or, persons within the confines of CP who can’t handle the truth ?

The denial from the top level of the club will(imo) lead to saturdays attendance becoming the norm.

If, there isn’t denial….then why ban a journalist ? Is this not – hun behavior ?

Too many questions I know but…better that than being put through a – PHD Tax-course.

Not looking for a fight….only saying.

  21. Canamalar: I didn’t read much at all about the ability to appeal although in my line of work I was well aware they could. The press spin of the outcome either seemed to point out that HMRC were unlikely to appeal or glossed over the ability to appeal completely.

The statement released by HMRC emphasised that they had lost “this stage of the process” and that indicated to me that they were seriously considering an appeal. Pity that seemed to have been deemed unworthy of comment by our “friends” in the press.

Lawwell and co are buying cheap and selling dear. I don’t just mean players when I say ‘selling’ I also allude to ticket prices. The product in the SPL is poorer because players fielded are cheaper and less able. Yet prices remain high imo

Re appeals,HMRC can take it to the Upper Tier Tribunal,House of Lords, and Supreme Court.

They have all avenues of appeal open.

    Rangers have none.

HMRC need only win once-Rangers need to win them all.

  26. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Craiginho,

The bit that still gets me, was the insistence that any appeal would only affect minor details of the case as the judgement could not be overturned.

  27. On the whole loan situation – Surely if BDO are officiating over the liquidation of the deed club then these so called loans can be called in by them as they have the right and obligation to retrieve as much of the deed clubs assets as they can.

As many have said a loan must be paid back otherwise it is not a loan!

In fact this is something that the administrators should have been doing, but I’m sure any investigation will prove this fact.

I don’t know if any posters noticed in the news recently that the company ‘Brother’ produced Uk’s last ever typewriter?

I thought this was quite symbolic of Deadco.

Typewriters are a thing of the past, the world has moved on and left typewriting behind .

Some things are of their time but are overtaken by progress and become unfashionable, just like sectarianism , tax dodging and stealing.

The last typewriter is in a museum. Will doubtless enhance the experience of future generations as an interesting relic .

I know all that, can you point out the first poster/discussion that confirmed the judgement can be overturned, it’s turning into one of those issues where everyone gets all smug and acts like they’ve known all along all the answers but can’t remember we’re the got the answers, innit
