Injuries, training, Hampden in the rain

576

The return of the winter break to the Scottish football programme is welcome. There are a couple of physiological reasons for this. Players are never truly 100% fit during the season, they always carry knocks and scrapes. Allowing them time away from competitive action will allow minor abrasions to recover with less risk of a more significant injury.

The way a player can train during the season is also limited by impending football games. Endurance training requires lots of stamina-sapping exercise. This is possible in the early weeks of preseason but its’ simply not practical to push players’ endurance limits at the start of the week and expect them to play at the weekend. Even less taxing training is possible when a player has two games a week.

A three week break from games in January will allow training programmes to be implemented which simply would not be possible otherwise. A mid-season foundation layer of fitness can be laid down which will allow legs to appear fresher in subsequent months.  This foundation layer should also prevent injuries.

Can’t believe it’s been 18 years since the League Cup final was played pre-Christmas. I’ve fond memories of the last one – against Dundee United, at Ibrox. The 90s brought us a Scottish Cup win in 1995 but that League Cup win came early in a season we believed we had a genuine title chance for the first time in years.

It felt like, and proved to be, a profound moment.

It was also our first League Cup since 1982 – the Hampden in the rain final, another great memory from a period we were so far out of the picture in Europe domestic competitions were always the ambition.  For those to young to know, the Celtic end at Hampden was like a 90° ash park, with three inch wooden planks standing upright, which some decades earlier held back the ash to create long-gone steps.  Good job we won.

I see Aberdeen’s inspiration, Jonny Hayes, is out for a month. As we know to our cost this season, losing your top players costs points. We’ll see how it affects Aberdeen on Friday.

  1. Winning captains. I wasn’t at the game given I refuse to go at the moment (apparently I am glorifying this decision according to a poster earlier in the day) I don’t like roamin in the gloamin as a song. But is it sectarian? If so what bit is sectarian?

The treatment of Celtic supporters by the police and by the media compared to the Huns is remarkable in any normal country and you know what it’s getting worse and worse. The sad truth is that our board have abandoned us to it because they have either no moral courage or they just don’t care (no money in it).

As for Moneyball do Man U s opponents openly practice Moneyball or do they just realise that trying to build a good team with balance is simply what a football club should do? Unlike our guardians who only ever see pound signs never the player.

  2. Neganon – 100 percent exponents of Moneyball and proud of it. Watch their set pieces tonight.

That song is sectarian tinged unfortunately. John Reid once said its these small things that stop Celtic speaking.

  3. Neganon – regarding work places. It’s probably because Celtic supporters tend to be more highly educated ;-). Heading into the wilds now so signal will die. Might be back on later.

  4. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

West End of East End – No other choice now mate since I’ve banned maself from talking about Communism.

Doing a wee bet on the Europa games there – It’s a competition that doesn’t really mean anything to me – but seeing some of the teams we had faced previously – I was sort of wishing that Celtic were playing in it tonight.

Ah well it’s all about winning the title now.

    Slan.

It’s yet another failed SNP policy then because I think Celtic fans make up something like 20% of arrests under the OBFA and even less convictions.

    ####

Could I suggest that a close examination of the facts of each of those cases would reveal that the 80% would have been offences before the legislation and that 20% would not?

That’s why Comrade Christine Graham said that the legislation was intended to even things up.

  6. Well WC then I guess they might just have got lucky. Even Celtic got lucky for a while but as we see eventually you realise your not omnipotent and it falls flat. It’s an absurd approach which has never worked. That we employ it so religiously and that its so obviously failing and the board still persist I think speaks volumes for how talented our board are.

Now then. Sectarian tinged? What an odd statement. What does that actually mean WC? You see my hypothesis is that sectarian is a word used in Scotland to outlaw the racially abused both in terms of language, culture and in its ability to fight back. The phrase sectarian tinged is intriguing.

  7. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

Plus the only time that I’m permitted to drink alcohol during the week is when Celtic are playing European football.

    Grrrrrrrr.

    :(

    HH.

  8. Weeminger for when you return. There is some truth in what you say but education his one of the ways a racially abused minority tends to fight back. The continued segregation etc is however a significant worry (well it would be for a country that knows and admits it has a problem).

  9. The Green Man

You are a joke.,Celtic Supporters are not Bigots well that the laugh of the Century. As for defending Freemasonry, that’s right my grandfather was one.and he was never a bigot, and he never ever mentioned that he was in the Masons.wasnt till he died that we found out he was one.John Mcnamara one of the best.

    Neganon 2 is spot on.

The concept of sectarianism currently in use….is a hun construction for joint responsibility, designed to obscure the reality.

Catchphrases…”One’s as bad as the other”….” Two sides of the same coin”

    Its laughable.

Nothing to do with your grandfather, who ive no doubt was a fine man.

Its to do with members of secret organisations involved in Scottish football.

    Do you understand.

I dont want Scottish Football run by Masons.

Why do you have a problem with that?

    HH

  12. Timbhoy3 so you believe that Celtic fans are bigots (bigotry is another word used strangely in Scotland). What do Celtic fans do that is bigoted?

Regarding Freemasons I have no issues whatsoever with people who want to joins clubs and groups etc (freedom to associate and assemble is a very precious right unless of course you are a green brigade and you want to walk together to a football game). However do you agree that anyone is a position of power and influence should need to declare such membership as a potential conflict of interest?

Eurochamps67- Agree with almost all of the above apart from Callum, I would keep him based on his performances this season. I would also offer Jamsie a new contract just to get on St Stivs wick…

The line about King Billy and John Knox could be deemed sectarian. I was at the Stranraer match and was a bit shocked when I heard it sung.

    Is this really happening.

Am i being taken to task by a masonic sympathiser on CQN:)

    The mind boggles.

You know i must have been mistaken all these years…i must have just been paranoid eh:)

Apparently there is no purpose to secrecy.

And so therefore would have been illegal before the SNP gave us their Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

Whereas Roll Of Honour would not.

Which of course is why the Act was passed by the SNP. They know what they’re about, even if some of the members of the cult haven’t twigged yet.

    Stronger for Scotland right enough.

  17. The Green Man If the S F A is run by Freemasons then that needs to change.but how do u change it Well there is one thing for sure our club Celtic won’t do much, they let the media run all over us,nothing positive come from them.so we will be waiting a long time from our club,to change the SFA.

  18. EL

I totally agree with you. We both know why the Act was passed by the SNP.

    The even up Act!

  19. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Oh no .. john Collins on radio. PR time bomb…

  20. Delaneys is that err sectarian? It’s certainly unpleasant (I don’t like the song and prefer we didn’t sing it) but both characters mentioned in the song were anti Catholic zealots. For a minority isn’t it fair game to attack them in this manner. Does making it illegal mirror the actions of the two characters themsves.

This is my point. The word sectarian in Scotland is being used to propagate racism and to silence the minority.

  21. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

    Neganon 2

My `over-egging` was in response to TGM`s comment that Scotland was a horrible , wee racist country.

There are many in Scotland who are neither racist nor sectarian. Many of those would be more easily made aware of Scotland`s Shame were it explained in less sweeping statements .

Overall, though, I am in agreement that insidious sectarianism is alive and well in sections of the Establishment in Scotland and we must continue to uncover it.

    Cheerio for now,

  22. Good to hear Paul Hartley stop the Lapdogs in their tracks ,saying he was ‘not interested ‘, in what is happening at Tannadice, exactly what we should be saying re the Sevco agenda.

    Paul said in his article:

“For those to young to know, the Celtic end at Hampden was like a 90° ash park, with three inch wooden planks standing upright, which some decades earlier held back the ash to create long-gone steps.”

    I will add this:

“Our end was the uncovered end. That meant often standing there in the sleet and the rain, while at the other end they were sheltered.

Not only that but, as you can imagine, their “party” songs were projected onto the park, while our songs had a big percentage of “angel’s share”…

    In saying that, what memories!

The willie Wallace Scottish cup final, Billy’s winning header against Racing Club (spit), European cup semi against Leeds United, etc, etc.

Other stuff like St Etienne v Bayern and famous Scotland world cup games. Massive crowds – 134000 often quoted but in reality…

League Cup finals, though, were usually a disappointment – even then when it actually meant something – UEFA cup place if I remember correctly ?”

I am not sure if it is sectarian. It is offensive to me hearing Glorious Saint Patrick’s name in the same song as that other pair.

  26. West End of East End on

Oooft Man Utd should have been 1 down and go straight up the park and score…Serves those sectarian Danes right for their racist pricing policy against the English….

  27. So Anthony Stokes has been pictured out & about with convicted Fraudster Barry Hughes which has caused uproar amongst the hacks at the Daily BumRash.

Dave King must be diving for cover incase they discover the 40 million odd dirty little secrets he left behind in South Africa.

  28. It is not sectarian DD. Nor is it tinged with sectarianism. But we have been conditioned to believe it is. Anti Catholicism and racism has been normalised in Scotland. It’s part of the furniture so we don’t even notice it now.

My objection to the song isn’t just that its unpleasant. It’s simply moronic,

  29. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

    Our 20 midfielder strategy ….

Is this signalling a change of approach?

We are moving to an Asda model from a M&S approach. Less quality more of a stack ’em high sell ’em cheap plan?
