Injuries, training, Hampden in the rain

576

The return of the winter break to the Scottish football programme is welcome. There are a couple of physiological reasons for this. Players are never truly 100% fit during the season, they always carry knocks and scrapes. Allowing them time away from competitive action will allow minor abrasions to recover with less risk of a more significant injury.

The way a player can train during the season is also limited by impending football games. Endurance training requires lots of stamina-sapping exercise. This is possible in the early weeks of preseason but its’ simply not practical to push players’ endurance limits at the start of the week and expect them to play at the weekend. Even less taxing training is possible when a player has two games a week.

A three week break from games in January will allow training programmes to be implemented which simply would not be possible otherwise. A mid-season foundation layer of fitness can be laid down which will allow legs to appear fresher in subsequent months.  This foundation layer should also prevent injuries.

Can’t believe it’s been 18 years since the League Cup final was played pre-Christmas. I’ve fond memories of the last one – against Dundee United, at Ibrox. The 90s brought us a Scottish Cup win in 1995 but that League Cup win came early in a season we believed we had a genuine title chance for the first time in years.

It felt like, and proved to be, a profound moment.

It was also our first League Cup since 1982 – the Hampden in the rain final, another great memory from a period we were so far out of the picture in Europe domestic competitions were always the ambition.  For those to young to know, the Celtic end at Hampden was like a 90° ash park, with three inch wooden planks standing upright, which some decades earlier held back the ash to create long-gone steps.  Good job we won.

I see Aberdeen’s inspiration, Jonny Hayes, is out for a month. As we know to our cost this season, losing your top players costs points. We’ll see how it affects Aberdeen on Friday.

Mangers Premium Seat Competition

Magners have offered us two Premium Ticket seats for the Jock Stein Stand on Saturday. To win you need to answer this question:

Don’t be shocked about “tax free” some people just kid on its loans, and a certain institution who is no longer with us seemingly didn’t bother with it …… Death & taxes, so the saying goes

    Gerry, very well put.

The only loans without a repayment schedule, hmm.

  5. Celtic 40 me. Are you accusing me of being sectarian?

    Really?

And do tell me what is sectarian about roamin in the gloamin? Please define what is sectarian about it? Or anyone else who is joining in with this nonsense? Explain it to me?

I didn’t realise you were bringing Man U into the equation, but stats can be turned to whatever way you like, maybe Molde’s best 4 players weren’t playing, just being flippant, but even more so Molde’s topped our EL group that Ronny gets grief for, a wee question how many other EL groups could have the other 3 teams winning their leagues, Fenerbache, Ajax and Celtic (the seeding of the our group) am pretty sure not another section has the 2nd, 3rd & 4th teams currently leading their domestic leagues …… Ii would be pretty impressive if there is

Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession don’t have a list of all 43 but 1 was the GLASGOW REFORMATION SOCIETY (now Scottish) which is still active and has a branch that still has regular meetings.

  8. SFTB I have no wish to prolong the debate with you. Suffice to,say that Celtics view of football success is a far second to their desire to make money.

Now remind me what is the purpose of Celtic football club?

As for Moneyball I agree using some statistics and indicators should be a helpful guide. But as can be seen by our glut of midfielders it’s the only thing we work on. No team building. Get em in and sell em on.

You are mistaken, there was a date, the repayment was scheduled for something like 125yrs since the loan was given, it’s like one of those payday loan interest things in reverse !!!

I am hoping Paul Bexindale-Walker (canny remember his name) maybe picked 125 in honorary for our Celtic cross white top

The Molde players who looked so fast against us ( such as Elyoussouni ) looked completely pedestrian against Seville. Solskjaer’s team has been outclassed, with the Seville goalkeeper a spectator throughout the game.

Frankly, we need an enormous improvement just to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa Cup, far less the group stage of the Champion’s League. We are kidding ourselves if we think otherwise.

    So What is your point?

You choose one game, in isolation, that has little to do with Celtic, to make an anti Celtic point on a Celtic forum. Why?

    It’s a Thursday night ffs.

We are 6 points clear on the road to 5 inarow.

We just signed a sought after “wonderkid”.

Who cares wtf Molde are doing tonight?

  12. I think Erik the Great Dane will be a stellar star for Celtic.

The booking he took last Saturday was superb, (as bookings go), utterly professional and necessary.

He is a winner, committed, knowledgeable and strong. He is a leader, team player and has a talent, (certainly at SPL level, hopefully at a higher level), that will greatly benefit Celtic.

First name on the team sheet for me.

On the topic of iniquitosiv’s view….. I thought at times in the EL were some of our best football this season, first half Fenerbache at home, both Fenerbache & Ajax away, decent point for any Celtic side that I have watched away in Europe, the Molde games home & away were terrible, probably likewise for Fenerbache & Ajax, Molde got the better in the “3” big teams

Anyway roll on Saturday after the dandy dons bottle it on Friday, hope that P67 guy hasn’t jinxed Thistle, I was unaware of their great home form until now

Celtic played a pre season game, 3 all draw against spurs, at Hampden. I think it was to mark queen’ s park’s centenary. Spurs had won the FA cup that year.

Celtic donated money to queens to help fund the roofing of part of Hampden. I think the amount was £10,000 rather than £100,000.

It was used to cover the traditional oldco end.

I think Celtic had an expectation that either the celtic end would be covered or that we would be allocated that end.

You ask what is my point. Then you decide what my point is. Then you get it wrong. The last thing I am is anti – Celtic. If the Celtic management are not watching the Europa on a Thursday night, then they should be. It’s called planning ahead.

I’m not looking for an argument. It’s quite natural to wonder how you would have fared had you been successful in the last round of a Cup competition. You’ve never thought how we would have fared against Madrid, PSG and Donetsk had we got past Malmo? One goal for, 20 against maybe?

Gerryfraethe brig. – agree that statistics can be used to prove anything and also agree that no other Europa Group had 3 teams currently leading their leagues. However, consider this – Rosenberg won the Norwegian League, with Molde in 6th place. Rosenberg finished bottom of their group with 2 points, getting gubbed home and away by Napoli. So you could argue their group was tougher than ours, no?

From what I read on this blog and many others, the main reasons Ronnie is getting grief vis-a-vis Europe are the simply appalling performances against Warsaw and Maribor and the fact that we finished bottom of our group without winning one single game. Sorry, but there is no evidence he is even learning on the job.

    Nice chatting with you.

It is incredibly revealing that the word sectarianism is used with such abandon. Then again this has been rammed down our throats by racist Scotland for so long it has become received wisdom.
