Interims will stun and frustrate

218

Celtic released their interim financial statement for the six months to 31 December 2023 this afternoon.  They will doubtlessly stun and frustrate you in equal measure.  Revenue for the first half of a season reached a new high of £85.2m (2022: £76.5m).

Pretax profit for the period was £30.302m, down slightly on the 2022 figure of £33.830m and remember, Celtic are one of the clubs who pay their taxes, so worth recording the after-tax figure is £22.68m.

Our amortisation figure for the six month period was almost dead level with the previous year at just north of £6m.  You’ll know what amortisation is, so CQN would never bore you explaining that one.  The sale of Jota was included in last year’s accounts, so the player sales figure from 1 July was £2.591m.  Cash in the bank at the end of the calendar year was an astonishing £67.327m, up £7m on a year earlier.

All that money and two points behind in the table is the elephant in the document.  Chairman Peter Lawwell noted his disappointment at the lack of significant transfer business done during the January window:

“The Board’s commitment is to strengthen and improve the playing squad in every transfer window and although resources were available, we were unable to further add to the squad due to the unavailability of identified targets.

“This was disappointing to us all, and never the intention. The January transfer window is notoriously difficult as clubs are very reluctant to let their best players go at such a crucial time of the season just as we are. Indeed, we resisted strong interest in our players from other clubs.”

  1. I think the No 1 priority at Celtic will be a new pitch ,I’m sure a lot I hear will agree with me on other developments that’s needed regarding the stadium, what will they be ,any ideas what will be developed,

    New pitch?

    No1 priority

  3. Great result for St Pauli tonight. Arguable also for Hamburg.

Yet again they nearly Hibs’d it but won 4-3 against second placed Holstein Kiel. This takes them 8 points clear at the top. There’s still a fair bit to go but it’s looking promising.

St Pauli’s Scottish linked club Dunfermline look like sneaking the points at thistle tonight a midst a bit of controversy !

Agree the pitch should be a priority for sure. Not sure if it is number 1. It certainly would be one I would be thinking could be a quick win if we get a gap in the schedule.

I think you’re barking up the wrong tree with Jason as Machiavelli. I never met the guy but I know 2 people who do. The first knew him as a wee boy growing up in Airdrie (I think) and she describred him as a weird little boy. He are up in a rabid evangelical sect, not the usual grounding for a New World Order Gauleiter.

My wife met him once on a Mental Health Forum and found him overbearing, overconfident and very dismissive. He seems to thrive in organisational settings by being willing to turn up. take the minutes and write the reports. He really is neither clever enough or personable enough to persuade doctors to do things that weren’t indicated.

Whoever did dirty work in COVID, it was unlikely to be Jason, who just seeks the limelight rather than sets the tone. As a Dentist, he would only be summarising reports into soundbites for the FM. The Policy papers would have been written by practitioners with more expertise. They all tried to do the best they could but they will all have made mistakes and own up to them in the future.

  6. I don’t know anyone who would be really happy with our results. It doesn’t really do anyone connected with the club much good right now to have the £70m or so in the bank. Not the CEO or CFO or Chair or Manager or fans or owner.

I also don’t know anyone who has suggested a single player whom we realistically could have signed in this window that would have improved our chances of winning this league ? Although plenty of my mates are moaning about it.

Everyone seems to be saying ‘it’s not my job to do that’ etc. I struggle to see how anyone saying that can be taken seriously. Surely to have any validity that criticism has to be backed up with the alternative options ? I saw Van Hoijdonk mentioned for instance and he rightly (in my view) wasn’t deemed good enough by our manager but aside from that I don’t know who I would have bought.

Personally I certainly didn’t see anyone go anywhere in the window that would have suited us but I really would love to hear any suggestions from anyone else ? I certainly know many on here know loads more about the game than me.

  7. All those complaints about the summer transfer window should be directed toward White Hart Lane as it was Ange that compiled the list before he effed off, btw thats the same Ange that seemingly nobody on here wanted

  8. Tontine Tim

They wanted him even less when they heard he was a mark Lawwell recommendation!

Typical after 2 years and 5 trophies he disappears off and lets us down.

A £2 reduction in season ticket prices would cost Dermot almost £2m…

Help us out with this arithmetic.

That may or may not be the case…but even saying that it was…these players may have become superstars under Anges tutelage and his style of play. The fact Ange fecked off without a by nor leave should not park the said players progress under a new manager who clearly has a different style of play and management. It’s no fault of Brendan’s that he’s inherited players not suited to his style of play. If the Board were serious, they would have given Brendan a clean slate and allowed him to utilize those he thought good enough, and to buy players for the positions he considered were not covered well enough with the players he inherited

  11. TONTINE TIM on 23RD FEBRUARY 2024 9:33 PM

That’s always been the reason most clubs now have a DoF – sign players of a profile that fits the clubs identity making any managerial change as seamless as possible.

I was a little concerned we backtracked on the DoF idea when Ange came in and maybe the board felt vindicated but I did fear life after Ange but I was told by people on here “he’s here for the long haul” or told to “just enjoy it”

If you’re asking what I think you’re asking (typo in ther I think)

    55,000 x 2 = 110,000

    110,000 x 18 home games….circa 2,000,000

    No?

Or maybe not employ Rodgers in the first place and look for someone who suits the squad we built.

Wouldn’t argue that point ….but we did and we should back him….otherwise what’s the point….the Board are failing in ALL departments

What the actual *&%£ what about the last few windows .

    What a riddy.

  16. Sorry, should have said per game….£36 per season ticket….

To put it another way…if I wanted to give someone a £1m bonus at the end of the season….id raise the season ticket price £18-£20.

    Put it down to “costs”

  17. My Dad died from the first virulent strain of covid. He had comorbidity from his working life, his lungs were not up to fighting it. In the beginning there was many deaths, first in Italy and then elsewhere. Fact. The medics were struggling to handle the virus and there were many unknowns. In New Zealand the biggest risk was the possibility of total collapse of the health system, which is fine in normal circumstances but has very limited ICU capacity. The lockdown was designed primarily to protect the health syste, people already unwell in the system, and health professionals. My better half and two of my girls are health professionals. I was coaching them to walk away if things got bad due to other people demanding their rights no matter the consequences. Another if my daughters is a gym bunny. The vaccine caused her heart to palpitate. The vaccine is not perfect, there was not enough time. If it happens again in our lifetime we should have learned lessons but to revise history and look to apportion blame is narrow minded and selfish in my opinion. If we let the health system collapse next time, it might be you who is in it, and need the community to care. I think we need better plans for next time so that people can opt out of publically available vaccine, and a plan to protect the health system from collapse.

    A sad story

    For what it’s worth

I have heart and respiratory problems

High blood pressure and other ailments

I believe the vaccine has kept me here. I also believe the vaccine has had an adverse effect on other people’s health. I personally don’t think there’s a definitive answer to the questions

I’m happy to still be here but I will always listen to both sides of the argument

  19. @sftb.. Not fair on BMCUWP…..

He was like yourself a top contribitor to CQN…

No flounce and no self serving angle…

  20. BMCUWP didn’t flounce he put his energy int9 creating his own blog. Quite a few CQN contributors started socialising in his place instead of here. Top Celtic man and human being.

  21. 31003 it was hard dealing with it over WhatsApp, and when all of the family were also ill. My mum was very close to death, my wife and sister in law who is a physio basically helped manage her back to health over the internet, because the health system in Paisley was overloaded and not coping. My dad had a rapidly developing dementia. He would have hated dementia jail so in some ways it was a blessing. My Dad was a great man and he lived a great life, his faith was strong and he loved his family. For me the saddest part was his funeral, surreal, closed, hurried and not what he deserved. Shit things happen in life and we need to deal with them, and just live every day we’ve got. Sounds like you have it tough with your heart and breathing but your mind is sound. Look after yourself. Hail Hail.

Just ask Paul67 or BMCUWP or Mahe if they’re just serving their own interests. They get some grief that I would not put up with.

I honestly can’t see any criticism far less unfair criticism in what I posted. What did you read into it?

My auld maw ended up with dementia

At the time it was hard work…for example…I’d have to travel around 7 miles to turn her tv over for her….travel home only to receive another call to say she couldn’t change it back…and off I’d go again….looking back….i wish I still had to do that….but, there you go
