Interims will stun and frustrate

218

Celtic released their interim financial statement for the six months to 31 December 2023 this afternoon.  They will doubtlessly stun and frustrate you in equal measure.  Revenue for the first half of a season reached a new high of £85.2m (2022: £76.5m).

Pretax profit for the period was £30.302m, down slightly on the 2022 figure of £33.830m and remember, Celtic are one of the clubs who pay their taxes, so worth recording the after-tax figure is £22.68m.

Our amortisation figure for the six month period was almost dead level with the previous year at just north of £6m.  You’ll know what amortisation is, so CQN would never bore you explaining that one.  The sale of Jota was included in last year’s accounts, so the player sales figure from 1 July was £2.591m.  Cash in the bank at the end of the calendar year was an astonishing £67.327m, up £7m on a year earlier.

All that money and two points behind in the table is the elephant in the document.  Chairman Peter Lawwell noted his disappointment at the lack of significant transfer business done during the January window:

“The Board’s commitment is to strengthen and improve the playing squad in every transfer window and although resources were available, we were unable to further add to the squad due to the unavailability of identified targets.

“This was disappointing to us all, and never the intention. The January transfer window is notoriously difficult as clubs are very reluctant to let their best players go at such a crucial time of the season just as we are. Indeed, we resisted strong interest in our players from other clubs.”

.The scathing part…..and to his own liking…..???

Both true and I’d guess BMCUWP would agree. He wanted CQN to know why he had given up on us and he gave it a right good scathing go. Fair play to him for that- I wasn’t being critical. He spoke his mind and his truth and, as far as I know has never posted here since.

“To his own Liking”- similarly he did not leave CQN to found a blog he did not like. He has remained with Sentinel Celts through all the grief because most people who post there, appreciate what he and Mahe provide. But if it ever became a vehicle like CQN, I guess he’d be scathing too. He’s an honest boy is M.

Afraid, you’ve read my post wrong but I can see why it could be mis-read.

  3. Met BMCUWP and his auld man (looked like twins by the way) once at a Celtic do up the toon one night. A more genuine Celtic fan you could not meet. And he would NEVER be influenced by anyone. I seldom post on Sentinel Celts but I can say he speaks from the heart

Oh come on. It’s literally not our job to identify players. If Celtic want to pay me what they’re paying Stivs, sorry Mark Lawwell, I’m happy to spend all of my working time doing the required research. Sadly atm I need to keep working in my own job.

Withering club was able to spot talent like Kyogo, Hatate and Matt 2 years ago. What changed? Oh wait…

Even the casual observer of our own league would recognise players like Miovski and Danny Armstrong would improve our team.

  5. In the early years of CQN .i requested a song

    young bmcuwp ….came forward ..

Respective disasters in the league Cup and Europe, coupled with the general flatness of our play would suggest there’s a small herd of them.

Still, we can watch all those teams still competing in Europe who haven’t suffered from the ‘unavailability’ issues which are perhaps unique to Celtic.

  9. Good morning all from a 5 degree and wet underfoot Garngad.

Players ARE available if you have cash, cash is king, if we are only buying available players then most of the time they are players no one wants or projects.

All this crap then you tell us who would come, smokescreen.

Now lets if Hertz play like they did against us.

    I doubt it.

Onto mañana 3 – 1 to the Tic.

  10. All the money 💰 and no ambition to win a league all we needed was to add a couple of experienced players and it would have shown we were trying remember this is our money the fans money that we put into our club.

  11. B78 – “Personally I certainly didn’t see anyone go anywhere in the window that would have suited us but I really would love to hear any suggestions from anyone else ? I certainly know many on here know loads more about the game than me”.

    Are you for real.

    I thought you knew everything.

Wow Mr Knowall does not know something.

Give us a list of players who said they would not come to Celtic.

Give us a list of all the available players in the last transfer window and jog our memory.

You cannot take anyone serious who spouts your pro board (Liewell) agenda when clearly our board are not doing thier best for our club.

    D. :)

  12. Too much focus on the January window and almost feels like deliberate deflection from the disastrous summer window. That’s where the damage was done.

We know January is difficult – get it right in the summer.
