How many times have we warned against internecine strife over the years? No one from outside a football club can really lay a glove on it, any real damage can only be done from the inside. Yesterday was Internecine Strife Day for one of the world’s biggest West of Scotland clubs.
Following on from Stewart Regan’s assertion to the media on Wednesday that an unnamed member of Rangers senior management did not properly disclose the damaging Employee Benefit Trust arrangements to the company’s directors, one of those directors, Dave King, has lodged a £20m claim against the club to compensate for the £20m he invested in shares in 2000.
There are so many acts in play at the moment it is difficult to know exactly what outcome King is hoping for here. The company is broke and at most will pay pennies in the pound to creditors, but Mr Regan’s assertion that some managers did not discharge their duties correctly opens up wide-ranging ramifications for those he referred to.
Regan excluded SFA president and former Rangers director, Campbell Ogilvie, from his allegations but it is unclear where his information came from. Concern is that it may have been directly from Ogilvie and that Regan spoke without an independent investigation being conducted. We hope that the SFA chief executive would not be so foolish as to attempt a cover-up of these matters.
Good corporate governance practices not only reassure the public, they protect chief executives from embarrassing resignations.
His silence on who conducted the inquiry that cleared Ogilvie and established that someone “higher up the chain” hid facts from Ogilvie, and perhaps King, is alarming. The SFA is not an old boys club, we need to know, did they properly investigate Ogilvie’s role or is something more sinister underway?
Who at the SFA knows about the inquiry which cleared Ogilvie? My previously-reliable sources at the Association were not aware the matter was investigated. It would also be good to know if the SFA board received the report that allowed Mr Regan to clear Mr Ogilvie. After all, the SFA are acutely aware of the dangers when important matters are kept “higher up the chain” from board members. What a sorry mess that would be.
I could cynically guess at these answers but after hearing Stewart Regan, it’s perhaps better to establish the facts first.
Let’s hope someone asks Mr Regan and he is able to clear the matter up. Better still, let’s hope someone keeps Fifa up to date with these developments and the ones we covered yesterday – don’t leave it to someone else, make sure they hear from you.
The Herald today listed charges including tax evasion, fraud, racketeering and money laundering against Dave King, but explains why he is crying foul play against the current, previous and potential future owner of Rangers.
In fairness to King, he has seen many obvious pitfalls in the Green proposition, perhaps a bit more internecine strife at the right times would have been better than blissful ignorance.

RANGERS’ administrators still have the option of accepting the SFA’s original transfer embargo for bringing the game into disrepute and avoiding the possibility of one of three more severe punishments.
SFA chief executive Stewart Regan has made it clear there is no room for negotiation after the Ibrox club took their fight to the Court of Session in Edinburgh, however, they could still make a sensational climbdown to avoid the pending punishments.
As things stand, Gers could find themselves being suspended from football, being expelled from the game or being ejected from the Scottish Cup after Lord Glennie referred the case back to the SFA’s appeal panel.
But SportTimes understands Rangers can still accept the original punishment of not being able to sign any players over the age of 18 for a 12-month period even though their bid to have it overturned was successful in a civil court.
Gers would, however, have to inform the SFA of their decision prior to an appeals tribunal sitting, possibly allowing the club to stabilise and avoiding the gamble of facing harsher sanctions.

DAVIE HAY today called on Celtic to hand John Kennedy the chance to replace Alan Thompson in Neil Lennon’s coaching team.
The former Hoops boss has watched the 28-year-old in action – and has been seriously impressed. Hay revealed he can even see similarities with the career curve of Pep Guardiola, though he stopped short of claiming Kennedy is anywhere near the level of the man who led Barcelona to Champions League glory.
“John’s coaching is first-class, the players all enjoy it, and they respond well to what he is asking them to do,” said Hay.

Lord Menzies raised with him that Rangers indicated they were being hampered because of emails being deleted from a computer. Mr Ellis said: “The pursuer (Mr Bain) did not delete any emails from his computer. He is aware his secretary, not at his request, but of her own volition, deleted some emails.”
He said she explained she went through all the emails on his computer at work and deleted all emails personal to him “including those over the death of his father”.
“She explains she did that after the takeover of Rangers in the expectation that Mr Bain would not be remaining in his employment with Rangers,” he said. Mr Ellis said it was not a block deletion of messages and added: “It cannot be correct to say there are two years emails missing.
“Even if it were possible for an IT expert to reconstruct the emails, which may be the case, again there has been plenty of time for that to be done. We know the defenders have trawled about trying to find matters in relation to the pursuer that they can characterise as a breach of contract.
German side Fortuna Dusseldorf have announced the signing of Cha Du-Ri from Celtic.
The newly promoted Bundesliga side said on its official website that the South Korean has joined them from the Glasgow side on a free transfer.
Cha, 31, signed for the Celts in 2010 from Freiburg and made 31 appearances in the hoops.
Although capped 64 times for South Korea, he was born in Frankfurt in the old West Germany and spent all of his career in Germany apart from his two year spell in the SPL.
Announcing the capture of Cha on their website, Fortuna Dusseldorf’s sporting director Wolf Werner said: “Cha Du-Rui is an experienced international right sided player.”
Cha told the website: “I am happy to be back in the Bundesliga. Fortuna is a great club with great fans.”
Cha has signed a two year deal with Fortuna.

On Thursday, Mr Whyte told Press Association Sport that he is “100% behind the CVA”. He claimed that it was the best way forward for the club. Mr Whyte added: “My shares will form part of the consortium’s shareholding and after that I will focus on other activities. It has certainly been an eventful year but I did what needed to be done, unpopular as it was. There was no alternative. It had to be done.”
This seems to give credence to your point, and Mr King’s point, that Green and Whyte are in this together.
