Kano, Rest in Peace

2068

It is enormously sad news that our friend Kano, Martin Kane, succumbed to his illness this morning.  Kano was an ever-present on CQN for four years, on occasion writing our match reports, until illness struck in 2008.  He was left completely paralysed, eventually only able to communicate through a machine, requiring round the clock care.

He was isolated in hospital in his home city of Perth, Western Australia, lonely for him and difficult for his wife Carolyn and their family, with no realistic chance of recovery.  On hearing this news, CQN reacted in an incredible way.  Our also now-departed friend, Pablophanque, wrote, “We need to get this guy home”, and a campaign started to raise the tens of thousands of pounds required to transform part of his home into an appropriate care facility.

As the campaign got underway I remember being concerned, it was going to take at least £60k and I thought we had no chance of getting close to this.  Pablo (memorably) didn’t want to head the campaign he started but others soon stepped in and the Bring Martin Home got underway in earnest.  Those behind it moved heaven and earth, and within a few months, the money was in place and Kano was back living at home with his family.

The Kano Foundation, a remarkable self-funded organisation which takes kids groups and charities to Celtic games, was established by those running the Bring Martin Home campaign, to harness the expertise and goodwill for on-going good, in Martin’s name.

When I first met Kano’s dad, Matt, who himself is no longer with us, six years ago, I was caught off-guard when he talked about Kano’s life expectancy.  Unable to move he was enormously vulnerable to any prosaic infection.  He suffered a few health scares but fought through them for far longer than many anticipated.

We got him back on the blog briefly, sharing some of his gratitude for the work done and his humour, but he explained the hours it took to compose his few sentences.  He continued to watch Celtic, of course.

This morning our thoughts go to Carolyn and the kids, as well as to his good pal Ramie and those who cared for Martin.  Those who decided to get off their arses and change the world for one family back in 2008 should be very proud of what they did, and the years at home they gave Kano.

    blantyretim,

I don’t think Celtic are missing a great day for football in Glasgow today – that slick, fast, passing style someone mentioned may have been compromised!

I enjoy the show when cosgrove keeps him in line.

  3. HT 1-0 PSV who have had majority of the chances.

A number of Celtic players very quiet – Henderson, McGregor, Guidetti in particular.

Happy to get through this without any injuries. They are able to cope with the conditions better and move the ball more effectively.

We need to be more imposing on the ball and play precise passes on this difficult surface.

The trip isn’t really about the two matches we’re playing – it’s about getting away for a week in the sun and recharging the batteries before the business end of the season.

PSV better that most SPL teams we meet weekly, so there’s the learning thing as well.

Watching the game on Celtic TV…. Poor quality video, so, taking the commentators word for the pitch being poor …. Slow pace to the game…playing no bad …

That was only second string PSV side

Could get better in second half

This mid-season ‘break’ was supposed to be a training camp, to allow RD to work with the players and get them better suited to his ideas. Who arranged the two games, I assume RD bought into playing them?

  8. “A number of Celtic players very quiet – Henderson, McGregor, Guidetti in particular.”

Spot on. Guidetti has been absolutely anonymous in the 10 position!!

Where would you expect a centre half to position himself for a cross from the right?

I would say he has to be central defending the goal not 5 yards outside the right hand post where the PSV player was. I would expect a RB to defend that area but Darnell was missing (as usual for a full back in our system).

Overall, PSV reserves have found it too easy to penetrate and work Zaluska. We have had to work harder for our chances.

In mitigation, it is a training match, and the players are being brave on the ball, maybe a bit too brave, but better to make your mistakes here than in a league match

Nice weather and a few interested locals and Celtic holiday makers.

First half totally dominated by the Dutch side, Celtic pinned back mostly with no sign of the ‘high tempo pressing game’ which is maybe on holiday as well.

Good to see Tonev getting a game as well as Fisher at right back, but the game is playing out as a mere insignificance.

  11. Very poor pitch, powder puff display yet again, against a very well drilled team, could be 3 down at this stage.

PSV are light years ahead of any SPL team but they are no better than Aberdeen at diving.

Craig Gordon was saying that RD was stressing to Biton about playing more forward passes as opposed to his usual sideway passes

He has composure on the ball and to keep possession is very important more so in Europe than in spfl

Match highlights how much Broonie means to us.

Nobody has stepped up in his place.

Might be the reason we are being overrun?

Watching this game in Gran Canaria. Just as well it is a friendly tournament. We were very poor in thevfirst half and could be about 0-3 instead of 0-1. Zaluska playing well. Pitch is obviously very hard and bumpy and is affecting our passing which is very poor. PSV mastering the conditions much better. Tonev looked very lively when he replaced Broonie early in the game. Virgil, I’m sure is not impressing his countrymen – far too casual at times. Guidetti anonymous, Scepovic looking better and unlucky not to score with a header. Izzy doing a fair bit of attacking but leaving a lot of space which they are exploiting fully and getting lots of crosses in from the right. Their goal came from one of these crosses and half of our defence was sleeping. Young players trying hard to make an impact.

Let’s hope for an improvement in the second half.

  16. Been off the blog for a few days. Didn’t know Kano at all but his legacy is plain to see. RIP.

Yes, it’s their 2nd string but it’s pretty much ours as well. Arguably only VVD and Izzy would start.

Biggest concern with me is lack of desire from boys like Tonev, Guidetti and McGregor at times.

Still trying to catch up on reading back on yesterday’s posts. Some truly inspirational posts from the Celtic family.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes and its good to know I share my birthday with two great guys in Corkcelt and Captain moonlight. Also some great comments about my age (Sipsini, see me later ya cheeky bassa)…………….:-)

Condolences to my wee bro who lost a friend yesterday and to the young lad’s family and friends.

Off to watch the second half of the game then packing for heading off to Dubai tomorrow. No snow in Dubai thankfully.

Mon the hoops, get back into this.

  19. SFTB –

So a cross from the right lands on Virgil who heads it into the danger area. Meanwhile Efe runs towards Virgil as the cross comes in, leaving the scorer unmarked in the box and you defend him by saying it was Fisher’s job to mark the scorer and “where would I expect a central defender to be”? Not leaving a forward unmarked to run towards a cross that is already covered.

  20. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

Tom had Virgil already covered the cross he wouldn’t have made such a mess of the header

Efe was covering his centre back and the way a defence should work is the full back tucks in to cover the centre back
