King circles the wagons as clouds loom

1586

Newco have cut Celtic’s ticket allocation at Ibrox from 7,000 to 800 tickets per game next season.  I understand their thinking.  There have been four games between the clubs at Ibrox, Celtic winning each: the first, coming from behind, the second, free-wheeling by a couple of goals, the third – scoring five, and the fourth – twice coming from behind, then winning with 10 men.

It is a litany of humiliation, played out while 7,000 have a party in a stadium, the rest of which is near-empty well before full time.  Can you imagine having to sit through this, season after season?  Of course they want to reduce our headcount and garner whatever competitive advantage possible.

There are problems.  League rules state a “reasonable number of visiting supporters” must be admitted.  This number should be agreed in advance with the visiting club, or else the SPFL board will adjudicate.

Then there is the small matter of the Ibrox safety certificate, which Dave King previously said depended on Celtic fans being given the Broomloan Stand.  The police insist each set of fans have distinct and separate approaches to stadiums at high-risk games.

Celtic will be happy to reduce the number of Newco fans they have to accommodate – it should shelve talk of having to put prison-grade toilet facilities in areas they visit.  Each away team will suffer a competitive disadvantage, but making visits to Ibrox trickier will do our European preparations no harm.

Whatever the police and SPFL say, Dave King has more to worry about.

He still has to get £11m out of South Africa and into a UK bank account.
He needs to satisfy the Takeover Panel before he can start a share issue.
He needs to satisfy the Court of Session over his failure to comply with Takeover Panel instructions.
He needs to satisfy loans due by 1 July (Oh you thought they were all going to be converted to shares, did you? Wait for this one).
He needs to fund a trading shortfall for next season.
He needs to find enough cash to keep the management team on-side before the transfer window closes.
And he needs to convince Uefa they satisfy Financial Fair Play regulations.  Straightforward if you have lots of cash, don’t need to use it to buy-out other shareholders at 20p/share, repay loans or fund a football team.

There is simply too much to do.  Better to circle the wagons by throwing some crumbs to the easily-deluded.  You know how this story ends.

It’s the 25th May.  It is also the weekend.  You have permission to wallow in nostalgia for 24 hours.  Enjoy it.

You can also participate in Green Day: donate £5 (see below) to the Foundation.  You’ll enjoy this too.

    BRTH –

    Juno and The Paycock .

    A mighty fine play !

There is a Hitchcock film . A clunky early talkie with a slightly quirky take on the characters . . Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it . It was called the Shame of Mary Boyle in the States . Juno and The Paycock was considered to be too ” arty ” for the American market

    =======================================================================

And here’s a link to the Hitchcock film on YouTube!

Brogan, another really god read about the wealth of authors , writers and playwrights from Ireland.

Dexy’s Midnight Runners front man, Kevin Rowland’s parents are Irish. Dexy’s first single Dance Stance , later renamed Burn it Down , was about how dismissive English society was about Irish culture along with the media’s portrayal of the Irish as thick and stupid.

The chorus of Burn it Down lists the names of Irish litary giants, Oscar Wilde, Brendan Behan , Sean O’Casey, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett.

The front cover of their frst LP , Searching for the Young Soul Rebels , is a picture of a young boy who has been burnt out of his home along with his Nationalst neighbours in Belfast.

We did Juno and the Paycock in my English class in fourth or fifth year.

In the early 1980’s , I saw a production of Juno and the Paycock at the Theatre Royal. The actor who played the Paycock was English but sounded more Cornish than Irish.

Great post at 11:28am. Instructive ans educational. My feelings as a young man on my Irish roots were very much the same as your own though I regret that I did not immerse myself in Irish literature like you did. However, on reading your post, I have resolved to make a start. I shall have to drag myself away from James Lee Burke, Clete and Dave but you have never nspired me to use some of my time in my retirement more fruitfully. Thank you.

I think that cover photo was from Bombay St,the incident which more than any other-probably-was blamed for causing 30 years of violence.

  7. Searching For The Young Soul Rebels, a classic record in my opinion and one that is never far away from the Starry favourite records box.

Channel 4 did a fine version of Country Girls . my addled old bonce thinks @ mid 80s.

  10. When his picture was taken as he fled his Belfast home in the 1970s Anthony O’Shaughnessy had no idea it would become a classic album cover.

But 30 years on from the photo being chosen as the main image for Searching For The Young Soul Rebels, released by Dexys Midnight Runners in July 1980, the album is often included in lists of top records of all time. But little has ever been known about the youngster whose face stares out from its cover.

Mr O’Shaughnessy, now 52 and a retired postman, spoke to the Express & Star at an anniversary event celebrating the release of the album, in Birmingham.

The photo was taken in Cranbrooks Gardens in the Ardoyne area of Belfast after Catholics began fleeing their homes following the introduction of internment by the British government in 1971. This meant IRA suspects could be detained without trial.

    image: http://www.expressandstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/WD3724735@Dexys-web-pic-160×108.jpg

The picture appeared in the Evening Standard in London the day afterwards and was picked up by Dexys nine years later.

Mr O’Shaughnessy, who was 13 at the time, said: “There were tensions simmering for about three days. People did not know what was going to happen. I thought it was a dream and in the morning everything would be okay, I don’t even remember the photographer doing the picture.”

He was one of five children who went on the run with his parents seeking refuge in a Catholic church before moving in to a house left by a fleeing Protestant family.

He said: “My late mother Kathleen is in the background wearing glasses. On the left- hand side is a young boy in a dark coat which is my brother Kevin and on the right hand side is my other younger brother Gerard carrying a plastic bag.

“I knew it had been in the paper but didn’t think much about it. Years later a friend told me the picture was on the Dexys album, I didn’t believe them and went to a record store where I saw it. I just thought ‘wow’.”

Geoff Blythe, Dexys’ saxophonist, 54, said: “It was wonderful to see Anthony. A lot of people don’t know his story or where the picture came from. It is fascinating.”

Bobby, South of Tunis , the Onlooker and Starry Plough, Dexy’s Midnight Runners are one of my favourite bands of all time . Searching for the Young Soul Rebels is in my ten favourite LP’s .

It was not until a few years after Dance Stance was realeased until I realised the significance of the lyrics after reading an interview with Kevin explaining why he wrote the song and his anger at the Englsh attitude to Ireland.

In their third LP , Dont stand me down , his pride in his Irish roots come out in more songs like Knowledge of Beauty now renamed National Pride , the Walz and They all sounded the same.

Agree that Saturday was no pleasant reading.

BP had said that he had had a few bevvies, and I suspect that played a part in how things went.

I have never met him, but he did contact me off CQN. For what it is worth, unless he has completely assumed someone else’s identity, I know his name, where he lives, and his business (all of which are as he has described on here).

It has been suggested on here that he may be suffereing some problem. I dont know about that, and I am not qualified to diagnose that in any event.. But, (i) a lot of us on here have had bad times. (ii) some of us have had much worse nights on here than BP…. but, he seemed to get a lot less sympathy than others have been shown on here, …., which was not like the CQN I know.

I saw one post that suggested that he had been red-carded. Personally, I hope that is not the case.

South of Tunis, that Rees-Mogg character is a very dangerous man who along with his cronies will cause even more untold misey with their views on life if he gets the Tory leadership.

He appears to be one of these people who loudly pronounce their Christianity but dont practice what Christ taught.

Anyway back to Dexy’s . Their versions of Seven days too long and Breaking down the walls of heartache helped get into Soul , especially Northern Soul.

  20. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

South of Tunis, the English establishment will forever lookdown their noses at Scotland & Ireland and unfortunately , it will never change .

Roddy Frame and Mick Jones’ Good morning Britain summed up the situation.

Before punk I was regular in Blackpool for my holidays and I used to buy up the ex jukebox soul trax. I had quite a healthy collection by the time I was 16 or so. Then came Punk and all of that got put to one side, it was fresh and rebellious etc etc and I loved it.

When the Dexy’s album came out I remembered I had a loada Soul in the wardrobe and dug it all back out. It was like a moment of permission to like other things again:))

Just logged on and saw your post about BP, for what it’s worth, I agree with you.

I’m sure the drink has played a part and it’s responsible for the many inaccuracies in some of his posts, if posters don’t want to communicate all they need to do is scroll on by.

In the past I have been the worse the wear and probably have insulted a few, always apologised if needed.

Life can be a very lonely place at times and somewhere like CQN is a major help for some people, BP has said more than once that it’s his family, family’s as we all know are not perfect so for some of the jumping on the bandwagon was as you say not very CQN like, just my two pennys worth.

I also hope he hasn’t been red carded.

  23. For what it’s worth one of my favourite Irish authors is Liam O’Flaherty – a brilliant story-teller and one of the very best exponents of the short story.

One of the highlights of a Catholic secondary education was being introduced to his works!
