Lennon a better manager than England appears to believe

542

I know what you’re thinking.  After the media heavyweights told you, on the day Neil Lennon resigned from Celtic, that he was going because he was unhappy with the amount of money he had to spend, pitching up at Bolton Wanderers is a bit curious.  What you were told that day was nonsense, deliberately headlined to undermine Celtic.

Neil had been in the shop window since the Everton job came up in May 2013 and had long decided he wanted a crack at managing in England before the end of last season.

On paper, the Bolton job looks daunting.  The club are bottom of the second tier of English football, while those immediately above them, Blackpool, Fulham, Wigan and Birmingham, like Bolton have recently had Premier League experience.  It’s early enough in the season that survival is a reasonable expectation, but Neil will know little about the squad he takes over, or about their ability to step up.

Taking this job is a huge risk to an accomplished CV but so is spending an extended period on the side-lines as an out-of-work manager.  Whatever the reasons he didn’t land a better job over the summer, Neil is a better manager than the English clubs appear to believe.  He’ll get Bolton organised and picking up points against teams with better players, just as he did regularly in Europe with Celtic.

In other news many of the same media heavyweights referred to above today report Arsenal are preparing a bid for a Celtic player, in January.  After selling us the same story that the same player would be subject to the same bid back in August.

It’s as though they have space to fill on the sports pages and there’re not been a lot of football recently.

One of the reason’s I no longer pay is because I don’t have a say where my money is spent i.e. I’d rather they spent more on their less fortunate staff than they did on very affluent staff and very highly paid diddy players who’ll never grow into a Celtic jersey.

It is my prerogative what I do with my money and I chose (all things considered) not to subsidies obscene inequality. The support already pay for this whether they accept so… or not.The inequality does not cost the board a penny, nor a blush, that I know of.

If you are a shareholder then you have a say ………. perhaps, not the power.

In the pre Fergus days then you had no say so whatsoever.

  8. Morning all. Very bright but very cold down here today.

Very illuminating the coverage given to Neil Lennon by both BBC Scotland and STV on becoming Bolton manager. He was pictured smiling!!! Something never allowed when he was here. Always shown scowling. Mind you, Radio Scotland this morning had to get back to normal twisting his words to suggest that he might be back in for our players in the next window. Even then, after their dramatic headline, they had to use his words, which, of course, did not really back this up. I can only imagine what the rags have been up to.

  9. Tom MacLaughlin,

I watched most of the Iceland game. They deserved it. I think it shows how much the World Cup has taken out of players, like our own Efe and Izzie. They have had no rest, Efe in particular.

By the bye, hope Scotland do the business tonight. If it helps us, which I have doubts about, I hope Germany win too. I think a draw would suit Scotland best.

Granted mate, I’ve never had a personal say previously, and as an individual my sensitivities deserve no more credence or consideration than those of any other supporter. However, I never witnessed in the past what I am witnessing today and on that basis I stand by my decision that as long as there exists a such a regime of disparity and exclusiveness at my club then I am no longer prepared to fund nor endorse it. That’s my decision, and with me, last year’s season ticket money (in full) went to Celtic charities as opposed Celtic PLC.

When Lawwell stated at a press conference that Ronny Delia was the first man they wanted to talk to when Neil Lennon left yet the job was offered to Roy Keane, was that a lie or had he just mislaid his phone number?

  12. m6bhoy

I’m ok with the kinda line for the press. Why? Cos it’s on response to their own loaded questions. And cos it backs the new manager.

There are no virgins in football so I can play along with facade the Ronny was the only true love that PL had!

The issue has come to light now cos of RK’s pretty classless revelations to punt another book.

My problem lies in the more subtle lack of integrity with which our supporters have been treated – or not properly supported – by the board.

I will endure a lot to see a Celtic game, rain, hail, sleet, snow and travel will not deter me, but I will never, ever, ever, come what may, bribe or threat or both and more, I will never share a hotel room with that guy again. That is way above the call of duty and Celtic just ain’t worth it.

Roy Keane stated that DD had said the job was his, he then got the numbers from PL and declined the role. (I think that’s a correct summary).

So he may have been DD’s 1st choice not PLs and DD exerted his authority. Perhaps PL made a deliberately low-ball offer in an attempt to ensure his 1st (cheaper) choice was more likely to get the role.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the last 10 years, it’s that DD and PL are both very deliberate in the language they use and it’s always wide open to interpretation.

If you listen carefully you can almost hear an audible sigh of relief around scoddish sports desks………….

Neil Francis Lennon, formerly of Celtic, has left the building.

Now, safely at arms length, his incendiary red hair put beyond use……….. he can be regarded in terms approaching the benign.

    Good luck Neil.
