Longmuir objections defeated. Then he asks for the top job

725

So after 15 years and 121 years respectively, the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League will be wound-up due to the creation of the Scottish Professional Football League.  Small objection, I know, but I don’t like the name.  It’s cumbersome and, in the case of one member club (Queens) downright inaccurate.  They stuck a word in to differentiate the new entity from the historical one, but why ‘Professional’?

I assume the last champions of the Scottish Premier League will retain the trophy, just as Northern Ireland did with the Home International Championship trophy?  Or will the brown brogue brigade insist that doesn’t happen?  I’m sure St Mirren will be making plans for the now-defunct Scottish Football League, League Cup, or at least they will when someone realises the awarding body is about to cease.

The new financial compensation structure will make a significant difference to half a dozen or so clubs in the second tier of the game but that’s about it.  There is no magic wand for Scottish football short of federation with a neighbouring association.

The biggest laugh of the day came from the news that outgoing SFL chief exec, David Longmuir, the man who did more than anyone to prevent the new SPFL getting to this stage, has put himself forward for the new chief executive position.

The word ‘shameless’ seems somewhat inadequate.  Make sure the brogues are clean for interview next week, David.

How will that one go?  ‘I know, I got it completely wrong.  I did my best to stop all of this from coming to fruition, what a laugh.  Best thing I can say is, I’m not Neil Doncaster, so how’s about it?’

Better get that CV types, David.  Or is my prediction that you were working your way to a position with a lower league club coming to fruition?

my first game against them was on 2nd april 1980, mcgarvey scored the goal wth 4 minutes to go, i can remember everything about it, smell, vision, feeling,

i was 13 years old, new pair of desert boots from smiths in greenock, uncle dunky convinced my mam i was ok to go,

huge crush coming out the ground, lifted off my feet into janefield street, a feeling of helplessness ive never forgotten, and the it opens up , you stand up and your ok. big boy now, its a celtic rangers game.

the shammy bus had to park in the depot, behind duke street, and what is now called the louden tavern. got to the parking place, huge rammy, really scary, big mob , bricks, sticks, attacking the bus , more of them than us. Bus takes off, Dunky tells me to run, i chase it , something bangs me on the back, John Donnachie hand out pulls me on the bus.

i starts greetin, wait on dunky, wait on dunky.

    bus roars away.

two traffic lights later on duke street, me greetin, door opens, dunky jumps on.

there was only a few of them, whit you greetin about, i told you it like this,

me sittin with only 1 boot on, lost the other.

and they wonder why i celebrate they died.

So how many of you CQN timmerites are like me and detect an air of resignation that Sevco (bus and all) are on the horizon to start afresh their 130 years of ascendancy and statements from Blog keepers throughout Scotland is one of a certain 1690 resignation to reality?

i’ve always thot the 3rd div would be the best we couldve hoped for, for them. Aye they’ll be back, worse than ever. Theres too much goodwill towards them from the scots parly, the sfa, clubs that want their share of the bigot pound and the black arts practicianors.

  15. St Stivs, I remember that game was’nt there but can strangely remember being in the Arithmetic class with that mad Nun and feeling happy as feck the next morning. Went to Dens when we got beat 5-1 shortly after with the Shammy.

Think McGarvey was just signed beforehand, The riots game was my first Glasgow Derby at the age of 12, an eventful day, being dropped by my brother whist on the fence when we scored, being hit on the eye by a Pomagne cork by Terry McCabe (RIP) then the feeling of fear at the end.

Lots of memories of the Hibs bus’s windows getting smashed and all the run ins we had with them on the trains.

Yes, glad their deid myself and I will never tire of reminding them of the fact.

“The lack of any real comment or objection to their admission as full members of the new football body or their brass necked circumvention or the transfer ban tells us that they have got away with the biggest swindle in the history of UK sport.”

Look at the number of comments about the new huns new bus… I appreciate the humour surrounding it, but with regret I appreciate more the dangers of the apathy being accorded the oiled ascendancy of the huns. Somebody has to keep their eye on the ball, even if it is bust.

Ah! well, look on the bright side, in a couple of years time they’ll be back at Paradise, playing in front of a full house, and the craic and the atmosphere… it’ll be the same as it always was; and in deafening chorus, the registers and accountants will be giving hallelujah severe belters.

Never forget when they do come back the referees will still be blowing the same whistles and making the same honest mistakes and maybe the video panel will need to take on a couple of apprentices just to keep up with the back-logs. And please God long postpone they day when they actually get to beat us. There will be intense gnashing of teeth come that day so best be prepared and invest in a gumshield now.

If you pay now with apathy then you take what you are given in the future.

  18. next part.

    cup final 1980.

i had got sort of over the last game, 5 weeks ago, it was just a worst ever event, wont happen again, uncle dunky said, its never as bad as that, it just happened, wont happen again.

the cup final itself was a great day out a warm afternoon, was it the 9th of may, my grannies birthday.

as the game ended, we won and i was ecstatic, the dust came up in the celtic end, maybe the last day of the the official attendance “80.000” . aye right just in the celtic end/

    and then in began,

i tried to get down the front , dunky said no stay here.

we went on to celebrate, they came on to break heads, they didn’t expect ours would fight back and not run away. it got scary very quick. the north terrace was a battleground on its own not shown on tv.

    i got very scared i was 13,

i got teary, time to go.

we went down the big stairs onto the north stand, from the very top you could see , hundreds of them in the gardens of the prefabs, pailings pulled out, bricks in hand, hatred on their faces.

the real riot was outside, sectarian mobs attacked people they hated , armed up, no police around. i wanted to run, many fans did, some stood and fought back,

dunky had me in his strong hands, dont run, stand up, dont turn your back.

he walked between them. banged a few, i cowered, he stood up.

no back of the bus for dunky campbell.

we got back to the shammy bus, a long time later,

never been so scared ever since,

    couple of lessons learned,

never trust a hun, never, some of them will kill you, they want to.

and if they die, celebrate us ,

    ourselves alone,

The feeling of fear will live with me forever, did n’t want to leave the ground at the end.

I was on the park with wee Mainer And Steven McDade, was lucky to get back into the terracing, spotted a first aid gate open and duly made for it.

All the older Tims were rushing to get on the pitch, whilst I was desperately looking for my elder brother.

i was standing under the south floodlight in the celtic end with a cousin of mine and his aunt. When the bedlam started we got out quick and went to a relative of theirs bernard tierney who lived in the big hooses at the back of the south stand. After it died down we went to the front of the stadium to see the bhoys come out to the bus with the cup. The bear asked for a scarf to put round the and i handed mine to him. Was the proudest 13 year old in the toon that day. Come monday nobody at st ambrose believed my story.

    ……………………………

They will be back with us in two years Maggie, of that there is no doubt. What can we do about it against the backdrop of corruption and media spin? Nothing apparently. They will be back and they’ll be as angry as they were before (but still pish at football). What can we do? Nothing? ………………………….

Well maybe we can, if we all get on board with canamalar’s questioning of our board. If nothing else it will tell us where we stand as individual Celtic supporters and we can decide for ourselves after that. Will it force their hand? probably not. But, you and I will know what the club’s position is.

    Celtic can do two things.

    1. Support their support

    2. Do nothing.

Stop pishing in the wind Maggie and get your anger directed in a positive way.

You’ve nothing to lose maggie. If its one or two you can use your judgement to decide on your course of action thereafter.

cant call it anything less than that, under educated, but all intelligent, Mainer what a laugh good friend of the twins, Steven McDade, many a day in his house with rebel tunes and Danny Sands..

but whats lost. its lost and gone forever.

growing up in the port of 1980 , we suffered nothing, but we did thin we were a scheme of derry. but being fair the huns in our town thought they could own us, but they didnt.
