Malky, Craig, redundancies

1217

I got it wrong on Malky MacKay.  In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.  That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”

Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.

Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions.  Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.

So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested.  You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal.  Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.

Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism.  Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?

I have some sympathy for their new management.  They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.

Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value?  No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash.  There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety.  By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley.  He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.

Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club.  I fully endorse his views.

King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces.  His rantings are not part of a coherent plan.  His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.

Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income.  Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

We do not know the views of the majority of the Celtic support on the living wage issue since, to my knowledge, the club has not consulted the support on the issue.

The fact that a minority are so troubled that they are attempting to raise awareness does not establish their views as being a minority opinion anymore than it establishes them as representing a majority.

I would only feel safe in guessing your likely perspective…

We will never know the answer because they opted for an SPL team from minutes into their existence.

A slightly different perspective because the assertion was being unable to run a club of the huns size without CL football.

If for arguments sake we were demoted for whatever reason to the 3rd division, I think we would certainly cut our cloth to suit – the top tier might be closed or maybe we would galvanise, but we would do ok and would survive until the point we were ready to challenge for the SPL title again.

Those animals had a team prepared to challenge for the SPL title after its 1st month of existence to try and feed the monster.

The fact the monsters would desert the huns to a much larger extent is simply down to the oh so demanding and expectant huns being what they are – animals more so than the original assertion.

    I think anyway.

We lived adjacent when we met. It was shortly after we cosined for a loan that my life went off in a tangent. I felt hypotenused. I should have know though as we were complete opposites.

    Just a thought

Theres a horse running at Chepstow at 3.50, Oscar Sunset. Should be about 5/1. Not ran for a while but quietly fancied. If even a few of us were to put a fiver on and donate profits to one of our many charities on here it could swell the coffers a bit. Not trying to do a bob geldof here but thought it would be a good opportunity to raise a few quid, and it’s a really appropriate name

Phil Mac suggesting 3 Sevconians are for the off in January. The money from those sales should keep them open for, oooooh, another couple of weeks.

Who’s there three sellable assets? The latest boy wonder, McLeod and Wallace are the only two I can think of. All the players out of contract in the summer will sit tight as will those who are there merely to top up their pension fund.

Players can’t be sold unless they want to go, get their contract paid up and find someone who will offer them similar or better terms elsewhere.

  9. Eyes Wide Open

Agreed, but the shadowy owners of Sevco had different, more short term, motivations than we would in such a situation, hence the need for the big bucks team; to get bums on seats, season ticket money paid and share issues bought into. All of which was onerously contracted away.

If the zombies were loyal regardless of what level of team was on the pitch, then yes I agree they could maybe have got by. However, as we know 1) the zombies are fickle supremacists, and 2) the big players at Sevco were only interested skimming money and so needed said fickle zombies.
