Newco interims, vanity projects and inevitable conclusion

449

Interim accounts for the 6 months to 31 December 2017 were issued by Newco over the Easter break.  Income was up £3.1m, due to the new merchandise deal negotiated (paid for) with SportsDirect, higher ticketing and hospitality revenue, although no mention was made in the notes of the progress the club made with its first foray into European football.

Costs were up correspondingly, by £3.5m, leading to a loss of £926k for the period.  The previous year, a corresponding loss of £238k led to a season-end loss of £6.663m.  We can expect something similar for this season, leaving directors to find an operating loss in the region of £7m.

The good news is that “penniless” Dave King has convinced a Trust to provide the £11m required for him to make an offer for shares his concert party do not already own.  The offer of 20p/share is likely to be accepted by some who have tired of the episode, including those who were ousted by King and colleagues in 2015.

It is likely all the money is in place to cover this season’s deficit and the share offer but the big question remains, how to breakeven?  Competing with Celtic is not even a question.

If expenditure remains at current levels, reaching the Europa League group stage would bring in enough money to remove the spectre of running out of cash, but that is a huge challenge.  Newco would need to overcome four higher seeds to get there (something I doubt has ever been achieved).

They could increase the football budget, but that would expose them to higher-still potential losses, with associated risks.  Or they could downsize.  Stick with Murty, get rid of the Portuguese vanity projects and develop a team from the ground up.

Downsizing also comes with risks.  Vanity projects sell tickets and merchandise.  A first team full of teenage graduates from Murray Park would be a hard act to ‘follow’.

In short, I don’t see financial viability in this club, never mind competing with Celtic.

  8. Good morning all and happy midweek match day!

So, with Aberdeen’s win last night we now know that we cannot win the title before the split. Aberdeen can still in theory attain 80 points. We are currently on 71 so need another 10 to be crowned champions , starting with 3 tonight.

There’s 2 options for winning the league on the first game after the split.

    1. If Aberdeen drop anything when they visit Tynecastle this Saturday then 3 more wins for us (Dundee, Hamilton, Split game 1) would be enough.

    2. Better still, give us Aberdeen at home on the first game after the split. Then, as long as we pick up just 4 points from our Dundee/Hamilton games it wouldn’t matter what Aberdeen do this Saturday. We’d be at least 10 points clear going into a game against them – win it and we’d then be 13 clear with 4 to go and therefore champions.

So, in short, Aberdeen at home please and preferably a lunchtime kick off on Saturday 22nd April ;-)

See the fact that we have games on in opposition to the champions league fixtures, does that mean the spfl will get fined??????

No matter what you want to dress it up there will be fans/season ticket holders not at Celtic park tonight because of the tv offerings.

Ronald overhead kick was good but not as good as Zlatan’s v England

Sorry, Zlatan has, time, space and and, in comparison to CR, an enternity to think about what to do as the ball drops from a height. It’s a wonderful goal that equally could have went just wide – given the time of it and the score it was a ‘no pressure’ goal, wonderful as it was.

Compare to the speed and height of the ball as CR decided in a milisecond what he’s about to execute to absolute perfection and precision. A true 10/10 goal and up their with Zidane’s at Hampden and Maradonn in Mexico as one of the greatest ever.

I actually cheered very loudly when it went in and I was a nuetral watching that.

Just read the latest from JJ,and posted a wee reply.

Seems I’m barred,I don’t even get the awaiting moderation stuff anymore. He’s clearly got a very thin skin when it comes to constructive criticism.

Anyway,I’ll post it here. I didn’t think he would allow it,just a lucky guess!

I must disagree with all the cynicism about Mr King and his offer.

It’s as clear as day that he is offering 20p per share in the UK,which meets the onerous conditions ranged against him. In order to do so,he has magnanimously promised to set aside £13m of his own money, due in dividends from one of his many companies in South Africa.

Any shareholder in the UK-listed Sevco who wishes to take him up on the offer is free to do so,and can pick up their payment upon request on arrival in South Africa.

I really dunno why anyone has a problem with that.

Can’t take issue with the back three idea, but not sure we need Ntcham. Much as I rate him. And I think Forrest could do with a breather, not through loss of form but from overwork.

I’d like the players in front of Brown to be

    McGregor Armstrong Rogic Sinclair

    Dembele Edouard

    *

I think McGregor can cover back to help Brown if required, and is also good on the right anyway. Edouard and Sinclair need game time, particularly the latter.

And I also know BR doesn’t think along the same lines as me,more like yours!

  22. BMCUW @ 9:59

You must be wrong re King. The BBC said last week that the matter was now at an end as he had compLIED with all the conditions set out by the TOP.We know that the BBC is the best and most impartial News Service in the world so they cannot have it wrong.

Phil has also got it wrong, though as he suggests that the TOP will not accept Davy Boy`s `offer`.

    Aye. Sorry. I stand corrected.

As for Paddy,he can’t do the ‘bite’ that Calum can to support Brown.

Play Paddy, put Calum into Armstrong Position?

    It’s a good problem to have though…

  26. I think the midfield will need some bite tonight so mine would be –

    That should be good enough.

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. So the great Murtiniho arrived at Sevco for a second time and has made them great again (until 2 weeks ago). Just how bad good are they?

Here is the league table since he took over:

    Celtic P 21 Points 45 GD 23 (11 points in the last 5 games)

Hibernian P22 Points 42 GD 12 (11 points in the last 5 games)

Kilmarnock P21 Points 42 GD 10 (13 points in the last 5 games)

    Sevco P 22 Points 41GD 16 (7 points in the last 5 games)

Aberdeen P22 Points 39 GD 9 (10 points in the last 5 games)

Take into account that Sevco took 6 points off Aberdeen in that time; even 1 reverse (or draw) would have seen it even worse for Diedco.

I think they will be lucky to get 9 points from their last 6 games. If Killie win their game in hand (against Hamilton) they will only be 7 points behind them and they still have to play them. Maybe even 5th place beckons!
