Inter were an incredible side. They were top of the Italian league and aiming for their fourth title win in five seasons. The one time they lost was after a play-off. The European Cup had become as much their domain as the Italian title. Having won it in 1964 and 1965, they lost the previous season’s semi-final in controversial manner to Real Madrid after some debatable refereeing. Reigning champions, Real, would suffer retribution, losing home and away to Inter in the ’67 quarter final. No team in European history had been so dominant. Real won five European Cups in a row but could not combine that with the kind of domestic domination this Inter team enjoyed.
On the morning on 25 May 1967 they were truly the most formidable team in history.
The game has to be seen to be believed. We won the European Cup, you know that, but HOW we won it is the most startling thing. I was a teenager when the first ‘video recorded’ arrived in the house. Soon thereafter a copy of The Celtic Story was purchased. I knew the legend but nothing prepared me for the onslaught, I’d never seen a football team destroy opponents in this way.
A CQN’er kindly prepared the stats for us:
Total shots – Celtic 45, Inter 3
Shots on target – Celtic 16, Inter 3
Shots off target – Celtic 29 (3 against the woodwork), Inter 0
Possession – Celtic 64%, Inter 36%
Crosses into opponents box – Celtic 40, Inter 4
Corners – Celtic 10, Inter 0
Successful passes – Celtic 310, Inter 224
Misplaced passes – Celtic 49, Inter 79
Passbacks to goalkeeper – Celtic 7, Inter 20
Fouls Committed – Celtic 19, Inter 21
Offsides – Celtic 5, Inter 1
No prizes for guessing the top two passers, Bobby Murdoch (60) and Bertie Auld (51) but it surprised me that John Clark and Jim Craig came joint third with 43 each, considerably higher than Tommy Gemmell (27), next on the list.
Someone suggested to me that the European Champions tournament had been devalued by a team winning by ‘parking the bus’ in front of their own goal. I disagree. This is football, spoiling has always been part of the game and the Champions Final is not always pretty, which makes the special times all the more special.
Someone lifts that cup every year, but few have done so with such devastating style as the Lisbon Lions.

Silence is golden but my eyes still see
silence is golden golden but my eyes still see
Talking is cheap people follow like sheep
even though there is nowhere to go
how could she tell he deceived her so well
pity she’ll be the last one to know
Silence is golden but my eyes still see
silence is golden golden but my eyes still see
How many times did she fall for his lies
should I tell her or should I keep cool
and if I tried I know she’ll say I lied
mind your business don’t hurt her you fool
Silence is golden but my eyes still see

Has someone slipped something into Paul67’s tea? The articles are coming thick and fast these days!
The European Cup has been devalued by having non-Champions in it, including this year’s winners.

Good morning from a sunny and warm Devon.
45 years ago I was a 2nd year apprentice in the textile industry. Having just
finished day release at the Scottish College of Textiles my Dad and I sat
down to watch the game with apprehension and expectation. When they scored
from the spot, doom and gloom prevailed. Back then when an Italian team
scored first, that was normally the final score. My Mum left the house for a driving
lesson(good planning) about a minute before big Tam scored. My Dad jumped
up and shouted out the front door, “they’ve scored, they’ve scored” the
whole area must have heard him. The rest as they say is history.
Because it was a holiday of obligation we both went to Mass straight after the
game, arriving late, with every one looking at us for a hint of the score.
A great day never to be forgotten.
Hail Hail
The finest team in history,I’m sure you will agree.
Win at all costs!
I think I know how a hun feels now.
With all this podium chasing, all dignity is gone!

DBBIA (previous thread) thank you, much better now.
European Cup devalued by having this year’s “winners” in it, surely?!
67 in the heat of Lisbon,
The fans came in their thousands,
To see the bhoys become champions.

As I went home on Monday night,
As drunk as drunk could be.
I saw a horse outside the door,
Where my old horse should be.
I called my wife and I said to her:
Will you kindly tell to me,
Who owns that horse outside the door,
Where my old horse should be?
Ay, you’re drunk, you’re drunk you silly old fool,
Still you cannot see.
That’s a lovely sow that my mother sent to me.
Well, it’s many a day I’ve traveled, a hundred miles or more,
But a saddle on a sow, sure, I never saw before.
As I went home on Tuesday night,
As drunk as drunk could be.
I saw a coat behind the door,
Where my old coat should be.
I called my wife and I said to her:
Will you kindly tell to me,
Who owns that coat behind the door,
Where my old coat should be?
Oh, you’re drunk, you’re drunk
You silly old fool,
Still you cannot see.
That’s a woolen blanket that my mother sent to me.
Well, it’s many a day I’ve traveled, a hundred miles or more,
But buttons on a blanket, sure, I never saw before.
As I went home on Wednesday night,
As drunk as drunk could be.
I saw a pipe upon the chair,
Where my old pipe should be.
I called my wife and I said to her:
Will you kindly tell to me,
Who owns that pipe upon the chair
Where my old pipe should be.
Oh, you’re drunk, you’re drunk
You silly old fool,
still you cannot see.
That’s a lovely tin-whistle, that my mother sent to me.
Well, it’s many a day I’ve traveled, a hundred miles or more,
But tobacco in a tin-whistle, sure, I never saw before.
As I came home on Thursday nigh,
As drunk as drunk could be.
I saw two boots beside the bed,
Where my old boots should be.
I called my wife and I said to her:
Will you kindly tell to me,
Who owns them boots beside the bed
Where my old boots should be.
Oh, you’re drunk, you’re drunk
You silly old fool,
Still you cannot see.
They’re two lovely flower pots my mother sent to me.
Well, it’s many a day I’ve traveled, a hundred miles or more,
But laces in flower pots I never saw before.
As I came home on Friday night,
As drunk as drunk could be.
I saw a head upon the bed,
Where my old head should be.
I called my wife and I said to her:
Will you kindly tell to me,
Who owns that head upon the bed,
Where my old head should be.
Oh, you’re drunk, you’re drunk
You silly old fool,
Still you cannot see.
That’s a baby boy, that my mother sent to me.
Well, it’s many a day I’ve traveled, a hundred miles or more,
But a baby boy with his whiskers on, sure, I never saw before.
The story of the Lisbon Lions is all which is magical about Celtic, I was six when we won the Big Cup, I lived in Carfin and we crowded into the house of I guess one of the few people who had a Tv in the street, this day will live forever in my heart and in one way it defines why I am a Celtic supporter. There have been many other great great days in the 45 years since then but there is something engraved on my heart about that day, the smiling faces of my friends and relations, the songs, the joy…
That’s why it was no surprise to me that two years ago on the 25th May my daughter was born, how could she not be!!!
Happy Birthday Hana
Happy Big Cup Day Celts….

STOP!
You’re obsessing over an unattainable goal.
I mean,if you can’t do it with all the articles we’ve had lately, you might as well give up.
Yer joost no’ lucky….
Spoiling tactics as embraced by Chelsea are not for me and never will be.
For all the right reasons the great sides of Real Madrid, Celtic, Ajax, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Barcelona will always be remembered. Who in the years to come will remember with fondness last Saturdays Chelsea win.Other than their fans not many I would suggest.
Hoopedreams (previous thread) – thanks, and all the best to you & yours.
Inter STILL play that horrible brand of Italian anti-football. You’d think they’d’ve learned their lesson in ’67!
And Chelski did the same THIS year. Awesome displays of furniture, masquerading as footballers.
I would like to wish all Celtic supporters a happy European champions anniversary.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS
just txted young Bobby about the winklepickers
think I know though
Paul-Absolutely incredible stats.Total domination of a top class team.
Think someone posted last year that Man. Utd. were the first team since Inter not to win a corner in the European/Champions League final. Chelsea almost repeated it this year-winning their 1st corner in the 88th minute and of course scoring with their first attempt on target from it!
Been a brilliant day on CQN so far-not good for productivity however!
Lhondondave -if they weren’t so obnoxious there would be something to admire in going to Barcelona and winning with 10 men, and defeating Bayern in their own stadium to lift the trophy.
But Chelski seem to encapsulate all the rubbishness of modren football ,with a few other mortal sins thrown in for good measure.
Lhondondave
Don’t wait until 25 May 2013 before posting again!
Love, this is my song
Here is a song, a serenade to you
The world cannot be wrong
If in the world there’s you
I care not what the world may say
Without your love there is no day
Love, this is my song
Here is a song, a serenade to you
Why is my heart so light?
Why are the stars so bright?
Why is the sky so blue?
Since the hour I met you?
Alone I sing in moonlight

Happy Lisbon Day fholks.
The competition is not devalued by a team playing negative football to win it, but the trophy itself is defiled by having Chelsea hands on it. They only won because of the inconstant whim of a bored Russian billionaire with nothing left to spend his money on. It’s immensely sad that the Big Cup was not won by a club profiting from the steam of its own sweat, but rather by the plaything of a rather disagreable rich man. Financial Fair Play can’t come into force soon enough.

If you’re still around the SWs, give me a shout any time you fancy a pint and a discussion about the Hoops. I’ll grab Tooting Tim, Brixton Celt and Rodo1 for the same gathering.

“Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we won that has filled me with satisfaction,” Stein beamed. “We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football.”
