Inter were an incredible side. They were top of the Italian league and aiming for their fourth title win in five seasons. The one time they lost was after a play-off. The European Cup had become as much their domain as the Italian title. Having won it in 1964 and 1965, they lost the previous season’s semi-final in controversial manner to Real Madrid after some debatable refereeing. Reigning champions, Real, would suffer retribution, losing home and away to Inter in the ’67 quarter final. No team in European history had been so dominant. Real won five European Cups in a row but could not combine that with the kind of domestic domination this Inter team enjoyed.
On the morning on 25 May 1967 they were truly the most formidable team in history.
The game has to be seen to be believed. We won the European Cup, you know that, but HOW we won it is the most startling thing. I was a teenager when the first ‘video recorded’ arrived in the house. Soon thereafter a copy of The Celtic Story was purchased. I knew the legend but nothing prepared me for the onslaught, I’d never seen a football team destroy opponents in this way.

No prizes for guessing the top two passers, Bobby Murdoch (60) and Bertie Auld (51) but it surprised me that John Clark and Jim Craig came joint third with 43 each, considerably higher than Tommy Gemmell (27), next on the list.
Someone suggested to me that the European Champions tournament had been devalued by a team winning by ‘parking the bus’ in front of their own goal. I disagree. This is football, spoiling has always been part of the game and the Champions Final is not always pretty, which makes the special times all the more special.
Someone lifts that cup every year, but few have done so with such devastating style as the Lisbon Lions.

Roy Orbison’s anthem became a favourite among Rangers fans many years ago and was until recently played in pubs and clubs before games until the club adopted it after it’s burgeoning popularity among the supporters and played it over the tannoy after Rangers’ 3-3 draw with Motherwell last June. According to RangersPedia, the song gained popularity after a singer from a group in Belfast sung it at charity events and the song stuck and was a firm favourite with fans ever since.
So have Rangers fans been singing this anthem to celebrate the death of a man, as was also claimed of the song ‘The Bouncy’ despite it being sung for decades at Ibrox and not immediately after the death of someone? Or is it yet another ill-fated attempt at claiming a song is sectarian to cause problems and spread unfounded rumours to encourage hatred among fans?

Many wonder why this is a Rangers song but a woman from Platoon used to sing it all the time at charity events and functions and it just sort of stuck. The Rangers fans got a great rendition of it going on the day we won our 53rd title and it was played over the Ibrox tannoy for the first time as the team did the lap of honour after the draw with Motherwell. The song is now frequently played over the tannoy pre-match and occassionally at half-time. As shown in the video at the bottom of the page.
Penny Arcade was originally written and recorded by Huddersfield fan, Sammy King, and his version was sang before the crucial Old Firm game on Easter Sunday 2011. The song was made famous by Roy Orbison. Claims by Douglas Alexander of the song having a “sectarian subtext” couldn’t be further from the truth.
From Monday 18th April 2011, Rangers fans began a campaign – similar to the Simply The Best Campaign – to get the song to number one while rasing money for Erskine. The song has been recorded by the original artist and has agreed to give all proceeds from the sales to Erskine.

I’ve been very lucky – I was at the game in Lisbon 45 years ago today – as a 12 year old. Years later I had a season ticket for AC Milan, and I remember invading the pitch (actually, just wandering onto the pitch, it was no big deal) at the San Siro after they won the league in 1992. I got talking to a couple of Milan fans, who just wanted to introduce me to everyone when they realised that I was a Celtic fan – even for them, the defeat of their “Forces of Darkness” by Celtic in ’67 was an occasion to celebrate; for the defeat of their rivals, but also because we cut them to ribbons.
I agree with Paul that defensive football is part of the game, but winning in style is different. People will remember Barcelona for years after the current Chelsea team are forgotten. And Celtic are remembered internationally as a great team who won the European Cup in style; who but a Villa fan now remembers that Aston Villa won the Big Cup?
Oh, and of course “The boat that I row” was writen and recorded by Neil Diamond – who does an absolutely superb version – and I’m no Neil Diamond fan.

For the record, I’ve met Neil on a couple of occasions and I’d have no hesitation in saying you couldn’t meet a nicer bloke. That’s why I can’t believe he got into trouble on the scale he did at Ibrox four weeks ago.*

But he always keeps himself in check. Or at least he did until the last Old Firm game.*
The simple rule of thumb to be applied is this – No referee, no game. You can’t abuse the referee’s right to be in control of the match.*
But the SFA have backtracked on their earlier, harder stance where Hearts’ Saulius Mikoliunas was concerned. He was suspended for eight games after clashing with assistant ref Andy Davis during a Hearts-Rangers game at Tynecastle and then had his sentence cut to five matches on appeal.*
If Lennon had been given a five game ban on Tuesday night at his Hampden hearing I’d have said that was a real result for him.*
If I was a Hearts official I’d be asking if there is really one rule for the Old Firm and another, more lenient rule for the rest of the clubs in Scottish football.*
I can see no distinction between what happened to Neil at Ibrox and any other offence of this type that’s previously been witnessed.*
If you do the crime you have to do the time, and Lenny’s walked off with a generous sentence. But in his private moments I’ll bet he realises how daft he was that day and he’ll have promised himself never to be that reckless in future.*
There can be no witch-hunt against Neil because I’m freely admitting what he did was out of character.*
Old Firm games are hard to negotiate but they’re no harder than they were in my day. I’d even suggest they’re easier to play in today because of the high number of foreigners on both sides who don’t fully appreciate what this rivalry means to people who were born here.*
Stuart is a good referee who isn’t prone to thinking he’s a bigger personality than some of the players on the park, which has become a modern-day phenomenon on the Continent.*
This isn’t about individuals or the nature of the occasion. Fraser Wishart, the Players’ Union representative who accompanied Neil to Hampden, said afterwards we had to forget what happened occurred during an Old Firm game.*
And he’s right. If a player at Stenhousemuir had jostled a referee, he should also have been in line for a longer ban than three games.*
There can’t be two sets of rules based on a celebrity justice system.
But I don’t think the disgruntled referees in this country will contemplate strike action out of sympathy for Dougal. The bottom line is they love the game every bit as much as the fans and the players. But they are entitled to know that everyone on the park understands they can’t manhandle referees and their authority will never be allowed to be undermined by intimidation.*
Neil, I’m willing to guess, will be feeling embarrassed over what’s taken place. The SFA should be experiencing the same emotion, but for a different reason altogether.
