Opportunity to claim a great Celtic reputation

632

Within a few hours the first leg of our Summer Cup Final will be upon us.  Make no mistake about it, these are the biggest games of our season.

The players and manager have learned plenty about European football over the last four weeks to know the scale of the task.  Maribor will be given due respect but the importance of Saturday’s win over Dundee United cannot be overestimated.  Players’ confidence will have received a welcome boost, while some will have realised the weight of responsibility lies with them.

Since the draw I have written enough about the strengths of Maribor, but they are weak at the back – and they are showing all the signs of over-confidence.  Having watched us against Legia, this lot will be shocked if a different Celtic turn up tonight.  Their fans, media and officials are emotionally spending their Champions League windfall already.

Most of all, we need a disciplined performance from Celtic.  No conceding penalties, getting caught in possession deep in your own half, or second yellows.  Stick to the basics, stay alert and we have an excellent chance of progressing; this is not a team with irresistible talent.

For a few players, they have the chance to claim a great reputation at the club.  What an opportunity…..

    4-3-3 ?

Doesn’t matter who we have in midfield it doesn’t give great confidence.

While we recruit more wide man even although we have McGregor and Forrest the central midfield is allowed to rot.

We need a backbone first and foremost.

My nephew plays for the partick thistle 20s, go and watch him when I’m not away working you get some good games and the young guys give it there all, was down at killie last night watching him and killie had 2 wee cracking players, the big striker was really good and scored but there left back was MOTM only about 17 but reminded me of a young McNamara. Definetly some good players coming through HH

As you says Stefan will switch, he’s got the fitness to cover the whole area, which is a bit of cheat to the formation but helpful for us.

He’s also seems bright enough to make decisions on when to advance and when not too.

Noticed Berget working hard defensively as well at the right times.

All about rotation as you say HH

  6. We are due a good game from a few of those in that team – after Edinburgh.

They know they have something to prove, so over to them.

Stokes better be a Duracell bunny tonight until his batteries run out, because without him doing that we are on our heels already.

I watched the Arsenal away from home last night in Europe and there young 19 year old Centre Back played well so I hope our young bhoy does the same. H.H.

  8. Although I LOVE to see Efe in the starting 11, I am glad that RD has left him on the bench this time…..common sense really and perhaps avoid another Juve situation.

Gonna be interesting to see how Denayer performs……LOTS of faith being shown in him!

  10. Every now and then a young player comes through that appears to have everything and they are chased by every big club from the word go.

I cant recall the last time it was a kid we brought through ,certainly non since paul mcstay in the early 1980s…….i think its about time we had another paul mcstay.

Hope your nephew does well, Ive had my boy all over the place but he’s fifteen now and no takers, he’s a great wee player but its really difficult for them to break through. Would like to see more home bred youngsters in our game.

Young McMullan definitely looks like a great prospect, he won the game for us at Tannadice and carried most of the kit onto the bus ! Great attitude

Off oot to see a 2-1 win

  21. Right, countdown well and truly on ,no not you carol ,the bhoys should be better drilled than our little soirée to Warsaw and the baguette isn’t a stranger to the midfielders anymore especially after Saturday so as ever good luck to the troops in hoops on and off the pitch tonight

  22. Team is exactly what most were calling for tonight so I hope there aren’t people complaining if it goes pear shaped. Personally I’d have had Ambrose in, Deneyar is undoubtedly a quality player but at this level playing one game with VVD does not fill me with confidence.

  23. Team selected – let’s get behind them. Main difference from last year is that the new signings are playing – not just squad players. Jason will be a future UCL winner, unfortunately with City!
