Within a few hours the first leg of our Summer Cup Final will be upon us. Make no mistake about it, these are the biggest games of our season.
The players and manager have learned plenty about European football over the last four weeks to know the scale of the task. Maribor will be given due respect but the importance of Saturday’s win over Dundee United cannot be overestimated. Players’ confidence will have received a welcome boost, while some will have realised the weight of responsibility lies with them.
Since the draw I have written enough about the strengths of Maribor, but they are weak at the back – and they are showing all the signs of over-confidence. Having watched us against Legia, this lot will be shocked if a different Celtic turn up tonight. Their fans, media and officials are emotionally spending their Champions League windfall already.
Most of all, we need a disciplined performance from Celtic. No conceding penalties, getting caught in possession deep in your own half, or second yellows. Stick to the basics, stay alert and we have an excellent chance of progressing; this is not a team with irresistible talent.
For a few players, they have the chance to claim a great reputation at the club. What an opportunity…..

Partizan Tirana was my first European game.
Massive crowd that night.
Alan Sneddon OG early doors put us 2 nil down on aggregate .
Scored 4 and Davie Provan ran riot.
Davie was my favourite player for years.
I know he has been criticised for his perceived anti Celtic punditry but he will always be remembered as my first Celtic hero!!

I think whoever does play from that lot will be under strict instructions to get goal side and press the ball. At the same time, we can’t be too negative – pick 3 from that 4 and they should be our attacking unit, with the back four and middle 3 (hopefully) keeping it tight.

From my experience, it has been okay to do that on entrance but not sure about after the game.
Not seen much of Celts this term except some preseason games in which the team looked reasonably good and then the Legia debacle when everyone had an off night in both ties. Not sure about partnering Denayer with Virgil , we all remember the chaos in our defence when Moyukola a new signing had a nightmare game alongside Virgil against Karagandy. Stick with settled team that won the Championship and had a good defensive record and play it tight, frustrate and don’t go charging forward. Finish the game with eleven on the field and we get our opponents back to Celtic Park to finish the job. Remember there are no easy games in Europe but they are not Barcelona.

I don’t think 3 attackers is too many really. I would expect Berget and McGregor to defend in the wide channels, and would expect 2 midfielders to stay deep at all times, with one breaking forward to join attacks.
