Paddy time, Europa and Remembrance

Celtic recorded victories over Dundee and Hearts after their first two Champions League games but collected only one point from the two league games following the double header against Barcelona.  They also won after only two of their four Champions League qualifying games, so there is no reason to expect a convincing win against Inverness tomorrow.

Inverness slumped to a freak 1-5 defeat at home to Motherwell last week but that was their first defeat since the same team beat them earlier this season.  Like Celtic at the Camp Nou, they will be set on defending deeply at Celtic Park in order to prevent another collapse.  This could be an occasion for Paddy McCourt to prize them open.

I had a look at the Europa League group tables last night.  Udinese, who eclipsed us in the same competition last season, are bottom of their group this year, as are PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao (who beat Manchester Utd home and away last season) and Helsingborgs.  Other recent opponents Rapid Vienna and Hapoel Tel-Aviv are also bottom.

If you’re on Facebook there is a story on the CQN Magazine page about Benfica implying Celtic only beat Barcelona because of cheating.  Drop in and take a look.  On a related subject, I’ve some good material from Spartak in reserve for the days before their visit.

The Annual Remembrance Service, held by the Celtic Supporters’ Association, takes place tomorrow, in memory of Celtic fans no longer with us, with prayers offered for those departed during the last year, including Joe McBride.

The Mass, at St Michael’s at 1350 Gallowgate just up from Parkhead Cross, will start at 12:30 and should be over in around 30 minutes, after which refreshments will be available in the hall to warm you before you head to the game.  All are welcome to celebrate the memory of those who have gone before us.

Lost wedding ring alert! Someone found a wedding ring in Lisbon which was probably dropped by a Celtic fan. Let me know if you know who is walking around with their hand in their pocket this week.

Get your CQN Annual here, an enormous resource from the keyboards of Celtic fans!

How on earth can you over sell by 1000

Maybe they got their hundred and thousands mixed up?

    lucky cody,

I’m giving Lenny the benefit of doubt, he has opened a door for the GB, its now uo to them, I’m sure they are smart enough to know if they are being strung along.

A Copy of their evidence to and ask Lenny to get the results of the investigation PL will have already completed on their behest, through complaints alreadt received.

  4. Good Evening CQN,

Hardly been on as was honestly going to stop going to the games after what had been going on with GB and Govan Emerald and to be honest I was heart sick. Delighted matters are being resolved, still bhoycotting tomorrow and Arbroath right enough in support of GB.

The FTT? Best decision possible as there is still a case to answer with SPL and the likes of Novo will need to sell their hoose to pay BDO.

    Hoopy Days!

    Statement on behalf

    of the Govan

    Emerald CSC

    On Thursday,

    November 22nd, a

    member of our

    supporters’ club and

    his legal

    representative

    attended a meeting

    with representatives

    of Celtic Football

    Club at Celtic Park.

    The meeting was

    arranged following

    the release of a

    statement on

    November 18th by

    the Govan Emerald

    CSC, and the

    subsequent

    publication of a

    response by Celtic

    FC on its official

    website.

    Our member had a

    legitimate grievance

    concerning undue

    attention he had

    received from police

    officers prior to a

    recent European

    away game. At the

    meeting on

    November 22nd,

    corroborating

    evidence regarding

    this grievance was

    presented to the

    representatives of

    Celtic FC.

    Celtic had previously

    indicated that it

    would devote its full

    attention to any

    matter raised by the

    support. We wish to

    acknowledge that

    the incident which

    gave rise to the

    meeting of

    November 22nd was

    dealt with by the

    Club in a wholly

    transparent, honest

    and willing manner.

    We believe that

    Celtic FC is to be

    commended for this

    approach as it

    continues to foster a

    positive relationship

    with its supporters.

    Following the

    meeting with the

    Club, the Govan

    Emerald CSC wish to

    confirm that we are

    fully satisfied with

    the explanation

    provided, and that

    we now consider the

    matter to be

    resolved.

    The Govan Emerald

    CSC also wish to

    acknowledge the

    support we have

    received from the

    Green Brigade and

    other members of

    the Celtic family. In

    doing so, we wish to

    reciprocate their

    gesture by

    reaffirming our full

    support for the

    Green Brigade.

    Having witnessed at

    first hand the

    willingness of Celtic

    FC to engage with us

    and to respond to

    our concerns, we

    trust that other

    supporters’

    organisations can

    resolve any issues

    they may have with

    the Club in a similar

    fashion.

    In our statement of

    November 18th, we

    named an individual

    employee of Celtic

    FC. This was an error

    of judgement on our

    part and we

    apologise sincerely

    for any distress that

    may have been

    caused to the

    employee in

    question or to his

    family.

    The Govan Emerald

    CSC have been

    committed to

    supporting

    charitable causes for

    many years, in

    keeping with the

    collectively-held

    values and beliefs of

    the Celtic Charity

    Fund. In its 125th

    anniversary year, we

    will be intensifying

    our efforts to

    support Celtic FC in

    improving the lives

    of the poorest and

    most vulnerable

    people in society.

    We hope to publicise

    these efforts in the

    months ahead.

  5. Sevco game at Elgin on Sunday postponed on police advice after too many tickets sold, SFL have confirmed.

Are Sevco claiming this as another world record?

    Emerald…,

noticed your post today and meant to get back but got distractedm yer post touched a spot, you must be proud of you lass, her inreview is an achievemnt on its own, hope she gets a place.

  7. Fans like the green brigade are so important for the club. They provide passion and soul. They are what makes the club tick. When you see what they do and compare it to any club in ingerlund it’s frightening…Anfield, and the likes were like morgues for big euro tied….they lack everything but money down there and they’d die to have fans like ours. imho they deserve our support.

  8. Read this nonsense about Benfica saying Barca did try against us. No actual portugese quotes?

Benfica coach refused to talk to Scottish press prior to game due to ‘lies told’ as the supposed quotes from his players were all made up. Laptop Loyal are not even funny anymore.

  9. I know its about quiztime and rollercoaster might be away for a pint but can anyone help settle a family arguement, am I related to anyone?

Rafa the next transient tenant of the English huns’ hot seat then.

Was he the guy who had to ‘share’ the song stealers job with that Evans chap before eventually achieving sole occupation? Can’t say he ever convinced me but there you go…

Whilst I don’t post very much in recent years (I blame the lack of song debates), lurking remains a regular occupation. As such I have 2 observations this evening:

    a) Has anyone heard from FFM today? If so how severe is his hangover?

    b) Can any Mac users, or indeed our esteemed host, explain why sometimes I can, but a lot of the time I can’t, scroll when on the site.

Thank you fellow CQN (posters and lurkers) for your esteemed consideration.

    Oops

no often I’m right but it looks like this time I’m wrong again :o)

  12. Agree with PFayr, The Club has responded and must be given great credit for that. If its true that Lenny is personally meeting with members of The Green Brigade then I believe there are sufficient grounds for them to suspend their boycott.

    AsonifDan,

brilliant news, and great response from the board, well done the Celtic board.

I’m off out for a celebratory pint, its not over but we are all coming together and thats the best start to the weekend we could have asked for, chuffed as a chuff.

    19:19 on 23 November, 2012

BBC Scotland’s Sports Dept in overdrive. They are suggesting that the deid team may have been guilty of merely an oversight with regard to the side letters. How do these people get away with such guff?

    ——————————

Nonsense! It was essential not to tell the SFA and here is why.

The guy making the decision not to ask was a tax fella not a football fella. He could take the decision, upheld by the FTT , that the payments were ok under tax law.

What he could not do is take the decision, as he did by not asking the SFA, that the payments did not need reporting under football law. That decision was footballs to take, not Rangers.

Now say the SFA had been asked, chances are they would have asked HMRC who would have sought details and either cut scheme off at its knees or okayed the scheme. Had they done that then all of football would have known this was a legal way of paying players and offered ebt contracts to their signings.

By not asking the SFA, Rangers not only were able to sign players others could not afford, as a result of their secrecy their competitors were discouraged from using the same scheme.

So there are two reasons why Rangers action was in breach of football rules and more important the spirit behind them

    1) It was not Rangers place to make the decision they did that ebts met football rules.

    2) For the scheme to work and get the football advantage they sought they HAD to keep the side letters describing the additional amounts paid from the SFA. this is crucial.

The whole point of SFA rules are to stop clubs being able to make “bungs” and the ebt loans by not being reported come into that category in football law.

They might be ok under strict interpretation of tax laws but not only did Rangers not register players properly under football law it is clear why they did not ie to ensure they got the footballing advantage they sought by deploying ebts in the first place.

    They cheated ok.

  15. So the people who wouldn’t boycott places like Kilmarnock, Motherwell & Tynecastle after years of overcharging & intimidation are supporting a boycott of Celtic??

I feel the treatment of our fans over the decades by police has been very poor, bordering on the brutal but the only thing that was going to put me off going to Paradise was if we supported newco back into the leagues.

I support our fans against any intimidation and victimisation but the club is bigger than a tiny few, self-appointed spokespeople.

There are ways and means of doing things and the focus should be on the big day oot away days rather than home games.
