Pay £4m or wait 171 days for McGinn pre-contract

1057

John McGinn is worth the £4m Hibs want for him.  If he was under contract at Celtic, we would not sell him for anything less.  But his sale price will be determined by the number of potential buyers in the market and where the player wants to move to, not his inherent utility as a football player.  These factors set his price.

I would not be surprised if Peter Lawwell had the the words “171 days” marked on a whiteboard in his office.  That’s how long he will need to wait to put a pre-contract in front of McGinn.  Having signed such a deal, the player’s value would be no more than £250k, a drop of £3.75m over the period, reducing at just shy of £22k a day.

You know Peter, it’s not going to happen.  He’ll wait.  John will wait too, and the people at Hibs will continue to murmur about Rod Petrie.  I like signing players on pre-contracts.  In the Celtic universe, it makes the world spin a little faster.

Stick at it, John.  Give Hibs your best between now and January.

I’m reluctant to touch the Kieran Tierney “story”.  By all reports, Celtic’s very firm reaction has convinced Everton to look elsewhere, but I’ll be pleased when the English Premier League transfer window closes in four weeks.  Killing a transfer is an art, not a science.

In my opinion we are in no urgent need to sign John McGinn we should wait until he becomes a free agent then if we need him make our move I cant help but feel had Liam Henderson been given his chance he would have been every bit as good as Mc Ginn.We need to strengthen our defence as it is still the bit of the team that gives cause for concern.I watched the full the Rangers game last night and considering they were virtualy a new team playing together for the second time they do look better than last season I think they will give us a stronger challenge this season but saying that they will get a stern test in the away leg.The rumour mill says we are after the Liverpool striker Ings he is supposed to be valued at 8 million if the rumour is correct it surely throws doubt on Sparkies future with the club. H.H.

The only reason John McGinn is playing professional fitba is his desire to play for his team Celtic. John McGinn would play for Celtic for nothing. He and his family are Celtic through and through. Believe me. That is the truth. He will get his desire.

  5. Yesterday’s match — TFOD2.1 vs Sons of ATG.

Had all the appeal of junior football.

Both teams tried hard but were some way off the pace and had glaring deficiencies.

The Sons of ATG tried to move the ball at a fast pace at times but just lacked the quality to bring it off. The had the speed, they played the angles, they had the desire but they just did not have the accuracy or the execution and some great moves came to nothing as they made basic mistakes.

TFOD2.1 looked better set up than last year but they are not confident in the final third and they still have to prove that they can handle a setback or a period of sustained pressure.

If the Sons of ATG play with any sort of intensity and confidence then they should get through.

If they try too hard then they will not achieve much as they are not a mature or capable side.

Will all go down to who plays the more confident football.

John McGinn’s twin sister is as big a Celtic fan as her twin bro. She wishes her brother well. Every Tim in Cĺydebank will be praying for John to wear the Hoops. He has worn the Hoops his whole life as a Celtic supporter. Now is his time to wear the Hoops as a Celtic player. His sis is beelin it isnae her.

  7. why the rush to sign J.McG at a vastly over valued figure by his club, if the player is as desperate/keen/life long ambition to sign for us then play the waiting game give them nothing and sign hime when his contact expires , we have other areas requiring strengthening before the midfield area.

  8. All set for a day of tapas and sangria tomorrow in the town with the good lady. Heading for Malaga Cafe on Sauchiehall St, I have been to their place in Pollockshields a few times and always had a great meal. So here s hoping.

The Lhad is currently in Montreal and loving the place , a quick trip to Quebec then off to Toronto for a few days. He may need a Celtic bar for the next CL game , any suggestions welcome. Cheers.

I think if we really want John MCG, we’ll get him.

But unfortunately for John we can’t be seen to be held to ransom by anyone, and certainly not by a nyaff like Petrie.

I am sure he will be a Celtic player sooner or later.

  10. Would be perfectly happy to sign McGinn on a pre contract in January. Probably the position we have most cover in, getting him in earlier would give more time to grow and develop and bed into the squad but if Hibs continue to play him he’ll get more game time there.

It’s defenders we need now. A right back and a centre half. I reckon we’ll rue not signing the boy from Hull.

We also need to work on scoring from headers and set pieces, a massive hole in our game.

You mentioned Sangria, there is good and bad, some of the supposed better stuff I wouldn’t thank you for, the best I have had, I like the taste, is from Lidl, I assume it will be available in britland, it’s 80c for 1 &1/2 lt, prob more in the UK, but imo the best I have tasted since I have been here, it’s an amazing thirst quencher in the heat.

Give it a lash and let me know if you like it, assuming it’s the same.

  12. Was ambivalent about wee McGinn until I watched Hibs v Killie at the end of the season live on Alba.

He picked a peach of a pass, floated with a curve over the defensive line to set up a goal; near did the same again if I recall.

Realised then he’s got a bit of football in him to compliment his main asset – the hustle and fortitude of Boon.

Playing for us, with less spadework and a little more time on the ball, he should chew up Scottish football.

Hibs are never getting 4 million. They’re after half that and a couple of players.

PL will have them make do with 1-1.5 mill and one player, or fckall.

Petrie’s a Hun apologist tube; would sell McGin to them if he could, but the kid’ll be having none of his masonic bullshit.

Hang in there, wee man; good things come to those who wait.

  13. Killie v St Mirren tonight, actually looking forward to a real game where primadonas arny involved, interesting to see if Killie has improved and how good St. M under Stubbsy are, the huns arny gonna find that second spot is as easy as they think.

  14. JMcCormick. I’d be happy to take care of the young fella. Get my contact details off of Paul or one of the mods. I can pick him up and take him to the Celtic club then drop him off again.

  15. 4 million for John McGinn no way.I don`t see him ready to walk into the first team, watching him last season he had some good games other times he ran around like a headless chicken.Brendan would have to introduce more discipline into his game.I don`t buy into ,Celtic minded, would play for nothing this doesn’t automatically make you right for Celtic.

  16. Watching the semi- final of Wimbledon, it’s like watching Avatar the height of the players.

I think signing John McGinn is a no brainer,we played 61 competitive games

last season he would easily have coasted it in most of our domestic fixtures.

BSR @ 4.54……”John McGinn has actually wanted to play for Celtic ever since he was an amoeba”

So, he was a late developer then…

They must be on growth hormones, that’s not normal.

I would put nothing by sport now.

Nadal out for so long was a dodgy one aswel, now he’s superhuman again!

  22. i don’t buy into this love in re J.McG , not a first team pick by a long way, a squad member at best , we already have better on our books waiting their chance notably EK. we have enough midfielders to cover all the games we play over the season unless we start to offload , but if BR sees something in him then lets get him in on our terms not theirs.
