Pay £4m or wait 171 days for McGinn pre-contract

1057

John McGinn is worth the £4m Hibs want for him.  If he was under contract at Celtic, we would not sell him for anything less.  But his sale price will be determined by the number of potential buyers in the market and where the player wants to move to, not his inherent utility as a football player.  These factors set his price.

I would not be surprised if Peter Lawwell had the the words “171 days” marked on a whiteboard in his office.  That’s how long he will need to wait to put a pre-contract in front of McGinn.  Having signed such a deal, the player’s value would be no more than £250k, a drop of £3.75m over the period, reducing at just shy of £22k a day.

You know Peter, it’s not going to happen.  He’ll wait.  John will wait too, and the people at Hibs will continue to murmur about Rod Petrie.  I like signing players on pre-contracts.  In the Celtic universe, it makes the world spin a little faster.

Stick at it, John.  Give Hibs your best between now and January.

I’m reluctant to touch the Kieran Tierney “story”.  By all reports, Celtic’s very firm reaction has convinced Everton to look elsewhere, but I’ll be pleased when the English Premier League transfer window closes in four weeks.  Killing a transfer is an art, not a science.

If Jozo has decided he wants to stay @ Celtic. MAGIC news. He is a Top CH and is the best CH @ the Club IMO.

  3. Heard Craig Brown on Radio Scotland say something to the effect that he would consider Scotland qualifying for the Euros as a great success. Says it all to me about attitudes to football in Scotland. To me, it stems from what seems to be the prevailing belief in not losing (the old park the bus) and kicking the flare players (especially when Celtic are the opposition) with no come back from the referees. We will never improve as a nation with that sort of mind set.

  5. I’ve seen Mikey Johnston’s dink from Saturday missed many times by strikers all my spectating days, Scott Sinclair for one doesn’t have the dink in his game and still ends up top scorer, but he’d have hit the keeper had that chance fallen to him – I’d swear.

Sinclair has attributes absent in Johnston for sure and the 19 year old should be developed alongside the players he’ll surely star amongst in a Celtic shirt, where he has to turn from boy to man. With wide man rival Morgan injured Johnston seized his chance, Christie continues to show potential, with the two older heads Forrest and Sinclair sparkling in form, and fitness.

Composure is the mindset of a goalscorer, some players get over excited snatch and miss, class acts dink like Dalglish.

Mikey’s finish was a very classy piece of work, in fact all four finishes were excellent.

The team look sharper than they were this time last year, the benefits of another year under Brendan and his coaching staff.

Mikey looks like he will be integrated into the first team along with Lewis Morgan, unfortunately I think Ryan will go out on loan again and I don’t see where he fits into Brendans system, at the moment anyway:((

Not sure he’s got the tools to dislodge anyone from our team but I’m sure he will be decent somewhere else.

Even without any newbies the team seem more together, fitter and more composed already, looking forward to this season immensely!

I only saw the edited highlights which I posted yesterday. That was enough for me,I was very very impressed

I’m not gonna put pressure on players by saying that I have high hopes for them-who am I kidding,as if my opinion matters, but you know what I mean!-but I think it’s time we stopped sending players on loan. They don’t seem to be learning anything at other clubs, and are miles behind in the fitness levels required.

I don’t know how you keep a large squad happy and match fit either, bar maybe three subs every game on the hour. Then again, lend as many as we can to every team bar the huns and minihuns,be worth it just for the fury from that lot!

Hope yeezuraw happy in The Valley!!!

“constant attacks” surely your having a laugh :-) if you are talking about your wee pal I take it he hasn’t apologised to BMCUWP yet …. but hey ho I might have missed it am pretty sure the Mods or our host wouldn’t put up with “constant attacks” but maybe the low posts count is due to the pettiness and repetition that has taken over the blog and the “input” of posters I.e, posts like this responding to a post complaining about other posters

Just my opinion as well :-)

  11. Keep relatively injury free, and we could have a season better than the invincible one.Less draws.A big couple of weeks coming up.Boyatta talks,Moussa talks probably Rosenborg, maybe.Looking at the squad, with those two included,I am not fussed wether we sign anyone else.If we can sign them up,alongside Rogic, and Ajer,we are all set.Alongside the signing of Edouarde, would be our best ever transfer window.Continuityis the key.

Allowing him to get under my skin has probably cost me a good friend, and a lot of self-respect. Lesson learned.

  13. BMCUW,

Some loan moves have given us great results.Calmac to Notts County,Ajer to Killie.I would much rather see Mikey going to Hibs or St Mirre, and getting a game every week.Morgan has served his time and it seems to have stood him well.In the case of Christie,he by all accounts had a very good season at Aberdeen,I just don’t think he has enough to play for us .If thats the case, playing out on loan,at least puts them in the shop window.Look at Janko. You just never know.Would love to see Mikey at Hibs next season. With him on the left, the Greyhound on the right, and the two strikers Lenny has, they could take second.

I’m pretty sure that Moussa and his agent planned to be gone from here by now-two good seasons, get the big boys bidding.

And it would have worked but for those pesky injuries!

Now,he has to prove himself on two fronts-as a quality striker, and as one who can stay fit.

For that reason,we need to get him on a contract extension, even an extra year will do at a push. Otherwise,we could be in bother in a year’s time.

As for Ajer, aye. New big deal for the fella. Oh,and I think we could do worse than extending Calum’s contract too!

  15. Teuchter

    VG ;-)

Big clubs will always send players out on loan Liverpool Chelsea Man Utd Arsenal all have dozens of young players that won’t get near first team football, and Celtic are just the Scottish equivalent.

Ideally there would be enough games for Johnston Morgan etc, but its just not possible and sending players on loan is a sign of success.

Kris Ajer and Calum McGregor have only recently signed improved long term deals

Good spot. Calum till 2021 and Kris till 2022

  19. Ryan Christie is a very good player but unfortunately not good enough to be a first or second pick as a midfielder or just behind the striker in our team. Scott Alan again is good but not good enough. We should take the money for them and let them go – they will both have good careers elsewhere.

Turkeybhoy @ 11.36…you nailed the hit on the head–continuity is the key! And Brendan says he wants to strengthen the team yet again…of course Europe will be the yardstick, it always will be for us, but I sense something spectacular in this season’s SPFL..Steegie Vee arriving at the future Asda site has given BR a wee bit extra incentive to do the biz…cheeky pupil trying to usurp the master…nae chance! Goals galore this time round…park the bus? We dare you!!!
