Pay £4m or wait 171 days for McGinn pre-contract

1057

John McGinn is worth the £4m Hibs want for him.  If he was under contract at Celtic, we would not sell him for anything less.  But his sale price will be determined by the number of potential buyers in the market and where the player wants to move to, not his inherent utility as a football player.  These factors set his price.

I would not be surprised if Peter Lawwell had the the words “171 days” marked on a whiteboard in his office.  That’s how long he will need to wait to put a pre-contract in front of McGinn.  Having signed such a deal, the player’s value would be no more than £250k, a drop of £3.75m over the period, reducing at just shy of £22k a day.

You know Peter, it’s not going to happen.  He’ll wait.  John will wait too, and the people at Hibs will continue to murmur about Rod Petrie.  I like signing players on pre-contracts.  In the Celtic universe, it makes the world spin a little faster.

Stick at it, John.  Give Hibs your best between now and January.

I’m reluctant to touch the Kieran Tierney “story”.  By all reports, Celtic’s very firm reaction has convinced Everton to look elsewhere, but I’ll be pleased when the English Premier League transfer window closes in four weeks.  Killing a transfer is an art, not a science.

  1. I wish commentators would stop using phrases like ‘anticipated the challenge’ to somehow justify a blatant dive, an act of cheating, a deliberate ploy to con the ref.

  2. France anti-football.

It’ll be a real shame if they win this tournament.

Think Belgium were the best and most entertaining team.

Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard best players by far.

    HH. ?

  3. Absolutely shocking decision. Referee doesn’t understand football or how VAR works. It was a natural movement of the hand and not an obvious mistake.

  4. Penalty for me.

Perisic knew ball was going in behind him so moved his arm to stop it.

    D. :)

  5. That decision could spell the end for VAR. Over analysis of something the referee didn’t even see in the first place.

Computerising the game beyond the need.

  6. Ref is a joke two decisions first goal from a free kick that never was …. if he had VAR’d it Griesman would have been booked for diving….the second was very harsh…..Cmon Croatia ??

  7. Big teams get big decisions.

    Nothing changes.

    We’ve seen this before.

Croatia won’t be allowed to win by this big, useless Argentinian showman.

  8. The one rule I would change in the game is the penalty, if the ball hits your hand either deliberate or not, it’s a pen, it will take the cheating corrupt referees out of the equation, there will be wailing and bitching, tough.

  9. Never a penalty.

    France acting like entitled bitches.

Griezman is a great player but he clearly dived to con ref on foul for first goal.

  10. Croatia can find their self unlucky to be a goal down as they have been the better team.

    Always a contentious rule.

So far for me its spoiled a good contest, how to interpret ‘deliberate’

    – unless your psyhic.

Whether you are in favour or not VAR has dominated this tournament, and I personally hope they dump it.

  12. Pogba offside when free kick taken for first goal, challenged Manzukic so interfering with play.

It’s a difficult one is the VAR, I would be in favour of it in scotland for obvious reasons, as has been said and will be said many times over, the big teams get the decisions, anything that levels the playing field imo is a good thing.

We have been cheated too many times at home and in europe for my liking.

I backed France to win the World Cup. They do not deserve to be ahead here. I think Croatia will equalise again and win this match. They deserve it on that 48 minute showing.

  15. I have just seen the penalty incident. I thought it was quite clearly a penalty. He seemed to move his hand deliberately towards the ball.

if the ball touches hand its a penalty, shame cos Croatia are the better team.

Sorry that is factually incorrect. That is not what the rules say.

Agree with Hot Smoked (sorry, HS). Clear penalty. Thought so in real time, and confirmed by the replay.
