Pay £4m or wait 171 days for McGinn pre-contract

1057

John McGinn is worth the £4m Hibs want for him.  If he was under contract at Celtic, we would not sell him for anything less.  But his sale price will be determined by the number of potential buyers in the market and where the player wants to move to, not his inherent utility as a football player.  These factors set his price.

I would not be surprised if Peter Lawwell had the the words “171 days” marked on a whiteboard in his office.  That’s how long he will need to wait to put a pre-contract in front of McGinn.  Having signed such a deal, the player’s value would be no more than £250k, a drop of £3.75m over the period, reducing at just shy of £22k a day.

You know Peter, it’s not going to happen.  He’ll wait.  John will wait too, and the people at Hibs will continue to murmur about Rod Petrie.  I like signing players on pre-contracts.  In the Celtic universe, it makes the world spin a little faster.

Stick at it, John.  Give Hibs your best between now and January.

I’m reluctant to touch the Kieran Tierney “story”.  By all reports, Celtic’s very firm reaction has convinced Everton to look elsewhere, but I’ll be pleased when the English Premier League transfer window closes in four weeks.  Killing a transfer is an art, not a science.

  6. well done Croatia for a brilliant run & so much entertainment & well done France, fully deserved winners overall (even without dodgy ref)

  7. Well Done France ???. Commiserations Croatia ?? You were very worthy of your place in the final and with a bit of luck and a better official you may well have won it….

  8. For all Croatias possession France always looked more likely to score in the second half.

I have stated on here many times that possession above all else is pretty but against well organized opponents these teams struggle to score.

France scored two second half goals from great shots from around 25 yard line.

It also forces defenders to vacate their area leaving openings to attack when you are a threat in this area.

How many shots like that did Croatia take?

Croatias play was neat and tidy but not particularly dangerous or potent.

I still think Modric is a great player, but, today, the French midfielders gave him nothing down the middle. Pogba and Kante were quietly immense today

  10. Never a pen. If it was a clear and obvious mistake in the first place why did the VAR panel ask the ref to look at it. And then if it was obvious, why did the ref need so long to come to a decision, including going back for one more look.

It was not a deliberate handball. His hand was already moving down the way as part of having just jumped for a header. The distance between the players gave the defender no chance to react either way.

  11. Just seen this…….

  12. Modric is a dead ringer for John Treacy the great marathon and cross country runner and he sure has some engine

  13. Found this on news now.

Some Celtic fans may have forgotten about Teemu Pukki after his less than memorable spell in Glasgow during the 13/14 season but the striker is back in British football and he’s just made waves for Norwich this afternoon.

The Finnish striker, who scored 9 goals in 38 appearances for the Hoops signed for Norwich on a free this summer after moving on from Brondby.

The striker hasn’t messed around in pre-season – bagging a brace for his new club in what was a superb comeback.

Teemu came on at half time against Paderborn, scoring two goals in four minutes to complete the turnaround.

A lot of Celtic fans had a soft spot for Teemu when he was at Celtic, he always put his head down and tried his best for the side. Even though it didn’t work out, there was no ill-feeling when he departed Celtic for Brondby – we hope he impresses for Norwich this season.

His Brondby form was much better – scoring 37 goals in 70 appearances for the club.

Sorry if links don’t work. HH

  14. Never a clear penalty in real time which is where a player plays the game.

Had ball been destined for a French player in the clear then maybe, but surprised ref gave it.

French had quality where it mattered.

Vive la France! And Viva Croatia for their run to the final!

Great for the morale for our own young French players, hope they can make it into the Squad Francaise in the near future.

Mrs BB said that she thought Modric resembled Cruyff facially. I said yeah you’re right – but he reminds me of Cruyff in more ways than that.

Too bad pal. But your boys acquitted themselves throughout the tournament.

  18. Disappointed for Croatia…

…but happy for Moussa, Eddy and Oli.

Brendan may give them the day off tomorrow.
