Pay £4m or wait 171 days for McGinn pre-contract

1057

John McGinn is worth the £4m Hibs want for him.  If he was under contract at Celtic, we would not sell him for anything less.  But his sale price will be determined by the number of potential buyers in the market and where the player wants to move to, not his inherent utility as a football player.  These factors set his price.

I would not be surprised if Peter Lawwell had the the words “171 days” marked on a whiteboard in his office.  That’s how long he will need to wait to put a pre-contract in front of McGinn.  Having signed such a deal, the player’s value would be no more than £250k, a drop of £3.75m over the period, reducing at just shy of £22k a day.

You know Peter, it’s not going to happen.  He’ll wait.  John will wait too, and the people at Hibs will continue to murmur about Rod Petrie.  I like signing players on pre-contracts.  In the Celtic universe, it makes the world spin a little faster.

Stick at it, John.  Give Hibs your best between now and January.

I’m reluctant to touch the Kieran Tierney “story”.  By all reports, Celtic’s very firm reaction has convinced Everton to look elsewhere, but I’ll be pleased when the English Premier League transfer window closes in four weeks.  Killing a transfer is an art, not a science.

If the pitch at Celtic Park is 105×68,say 120×75 metres overall, that’s some very expensive grass we’ve laid down.

    About £167 per square meter.

  2. David 66,

This urban myth that Simunovic is injury prone,is a nonsense. The boy took a bad ankle injury playing for Celtic, came back too quickly to play in Europe a match for us,and was instantly targeted and Crockedagain by the opposition. If his reluctance to risk his carreer playing on the abominations that plastic pitches are called in ScotlandI am sorry,I agree with him 100%.BROONY,Boyatta,Lustig,Dembele,Griffiths,to name a few, have all had injury problems. It’s a contact sport, some are a bit unluckier than others.

IMHO,he is a good CH,one we would not be able to afford if we were to try and buy him now.We should be careful what we wish for.The delusion shared by many that we can buy an affordable, for us,CH,who will neve.r make a bad pass,a mistake,is quite frankly, ridiculous.

    I don’t disagree,but it’s a pricey piece of kit.

  4. Turkeybhoy, I think Simonivic is a good player but he cannot play frequently enough for my liking.

If he cannot play on certain surfaces and we have such surfaces in Scotland then he is not what we need IMO.

I want BR to have as many good and fit players at his disposal EVERY week not only in some weeks.

  6. Turkeybhoy and others…. Is football a contact sport??

My belief is you try to get the ball not the man, therefor not a contact sport as say Rugby or American football, which I believe to be contact sports.

Fair couple of point’s, however, I believe some Celtic fans are over critical of our defence, if you play attacking football, more often than not, you concede goals, TBF I would rather win 5 – 2 than one nil.

There are three plastic pitches in our division. That’s a maximum of six away matches, and fewer in practice.

With the number of games we play every season,I don’t think it’s unreasonable to rotate our squad on occasion. Simo missing that number of games wouldn’t bother me one bit.

FWIW,Henrik and a number of others were heavily critical of those pitches. I played at Helenvale a few times, and I know what they mean!

Tommy Gemmell was sent off for a fairly innocuous contact on Helmut Haller while on Scotland duty.

A fair question but common sense tells me Sadiq Khan is simply looking to ridicule Trump

    67ECW

  14. BMCUW I know what Helenvale was like, that was a slab of concrete with a green carpet over it, but these pitches have come a long way since then.

That said there is no place in our top division for them new ones 4 g or whatever.

I am not a fan of rotation, although I do know this is the modern game, as I said big Jozo is a good player, I would just like someone who can play on all surfaces as it gives BR a better team selection.

By the way I took my grandson to Huntershill pitches in auchenairn in glasgow for a tournament a few weeks ago and it was 4G I think, it was an amazing surface. That said my playing days are over so I was only standing and kicking the ball no running or stopping, turning etc

  18. David 66,The pitches at Killie and Hamilton are a disgrace. They are what you would call threadbare. They bear no resemblance at all to the new state of the art synthetic pitches. There is not a player who likes these surfaces. We have witnessed the lengths some clubs will go to to hinder our club.Growing the grass long,no watering of pitches. These surfaces are a broken ankle just waiting to happen.

Try telling KT,and BROONY,football is not a contact sport.

  19. 50 shades of green on

Grass or Synthetic that is the question…

I think it was Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins who summed it up perfectly…

When asked which he prefers the bold Dan said, I’ve never smoked synthetic so it’s grass for me .:-):-)

  21. Turkeybhoy I like a good hard tackle the same as the next man.

However I believe that our players win the ball and as a consequence of winning the ball they might also make contact with our opponent. Now on the other hand other teams tackle our players first and then look to win the ball, obviously cheating.

I am genuinely interested to find out what other fans think of football, if they see it as a contact sport or is contact a consequence of winning the ball first. I have used the saying ” football is a contact sport in the past, but to often it is used when one of our players have recieved a bad challenge.

Greetings from sun-scorched East Anglia, where football may not have come home but BNP pamphlet distributors have.

Anyhoo, I’ve not been on the blog much over the summer so far, and I’ve not watched any of the preseason matches. I must admit I am still a little bit torn over how much I engage with Scottish football this season. Sure, things may well progress on Res 12 related matters but the fact that Sevco were granted yet another UEFA licence this year with not so much as a peep from any other member clubs makes me question whether it’s worth bothering from now on.

I don’t even think that the impending doom down Ibrox way is enough to appeal to my Schadenfreude list anymore.

Sevco getting a European licence is a puzzle. Won’t lose any sleep over it,I’ll just wait for them to implode of their own accord

Been waiting for six years now, right enough…

  25. Starry ( ages ago )

    I think so.

Public condemnation especially by the Catholic Church of the despicable incident kept the locus on the OO.

They have no alternative other than to co operate with the council via Susan Aitken by re routing , they have no escape.

Right minded people re acted and in generations to come the OO will shrink as it has already, towards record low numbers.

Compare how Police Scotland treat football fans ( especially Celtic fans ) a culture that will require to change, it’s a start along with the banning of OBAF act.

The petition and public comment was well worth while, kettling of the OO was well overdue, pity Canon White was a victim before some action was taken.
