Pay the piper or pay the consequences

712

Humiliate your rivals in the Cup Final by putting five goals past them and, if you don’t pay the piper, you pay the consequences.  Winning trophies while running up debts you cannot afford to pay is not a viable strategy.  The consequences, if you are fortunate enough to survive, has to be painful, otherwise football removes the moral hazard of failure, making Hearts recent experience more likely to happen to other clubs.

Hearts season at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership is the cost of pouring millions of pounds creditors will not receive onto the Hampden Park pitch to hit five goals past a Hibs team, who live within their means.  Many other teams were denied progress in the cups, or higher prize money in the league, while the fantasists were building to their 5-1 glory.

Billy Brown’s nonsense about rescinding a punishment for a club who are still in administration is yet another fantasy, but it was fostered in 2012, by the notion that Scottish football can change insolvency rules on the hoof to accommodate a failed club.  If you want to change insolvency rules, knock yourself out, but there is near-uniform agreement that you cannot change rules when a favoured club falls foul, in order to benefit them.

This notion that because the rules were not changed to help Newco Rangers into top flight football, Scotland’s reigning Third Division champions would be outraged, is hardly news.  The 11 top flight clubs, most of whom appear to be enjoying a competitive ‘Best of the Rest’ league race, and a whole clutch of lower league clubs, would also be outraged if Hearts were advantaged.

In October 2011, when Rangers fate was privately acknowledged, Craig Whyte, Neil Doncaster and SPL chairman, Ralph Topping, discussed this rule change ruse.  It should have been a 30 second conversation; declined when first proposed.  Instead, Scottish football was put through the real trauma of a fantasy fear of Armageddon.  Now everyone who can’t pay their bills think they have the same entitlement to campaign for a rule change – and why shouldn’t they, the tabloids told everyone that changing the rules on the hoof was acceptable.

Hearts fans know this.  They are heading for relegation, those I have spoken to have accepted the situation.  For them, it’s all about ensuring the club survives and sorting things out for the long term, SPFL results don’t even register.  I don’t know any who want to see their club go cap in hand for rule changes, the way Whyte, then Green, did.  It’s demeaning and lacks dignity.

This is turning into my favourite domestic season yet.  All the ‘They’ve suffered enough’ merchants better get their strategies sorted for the next episode.

  1. the long wait is over on

Just read Jackson’s article on Hearts.

    Dearie me. What utter rubbish.

Poor , poor Hearts but no mention , unless I missed it among the guff , of them actually paying back their debts.

If anyone at Hearts whether it be poor, poor Gary Locke or any of those poor, poor players don’t like the dehumanising and utterly abject experience the poor , poor wee souls are being subjected to I have one suggestion.

Resign or put in a transfer request and leave.

Had that very conversation with my fellow Celtic supporting office pal this morning.

Celtic had the first choice of youth players 4 year ag when Stevie May, Ryan Gauld, Ryan Jack and others were in their early to mid teens…what happened to the boys we choose over them?

The aforementioned prodigies now have 30 games more experience at the top level of Scottish football. Even the ones we pockle from other teams (Tony Watt) are off the radar…young players are either not being developed appropriately or mismanaged at Celtic as they appear to be losing ground on their contempraries who go to other clubs. Or so it appears to me…

Amido Balde investment would have bought the cream of Scottish youth talent.. Vic Wanyama, Ki and Hooper strategy does not need to be the onlyapproach – time for Celtic to develop a range of development streams – including capitalising on their monoploly in the transfer window -we can buyScottish prodigies in a one buyer market from clubs who can not say no to any reasonable offer.

However Gordon Js novel is received, he can rest assured it will be better written than anything Jackson’s managed to vomit over the pages of that underclass infogram for the past two decades.

I was maybe joooost a bit young to really appreciate Bobby.

Maybe not though. Cos when he wisnae playing,I always wanted to know why.

Jock was famed for closing the door on a Celtic career too early. That, and his poor record with keepers, were his only weaknesses in my eyes.

  5. Kitalba @1321,

I had a discussion along these very lines with a former coach of Celtic after a tour of Lennoxtown.

Most of the boys know they wont make it at Celtic, but they get the best coaching, training and facilities at Celtic. Many of them are considered prizes by other clubs in the SPFL, simply because of the above. Not to mention that these kids are decent players in their own rights.

A quick look at the squads of the other SPFL clubs will show a surprising amount of them are ex-Celtic.

They may not be “good enough” for Celtic, but they are good enough for decent careers elsewhere.

That aside (Grey Skull) what do you think about the point of my post and how Scottish football players who chose to be reared in Celtic appear to have their careers hit a roadblock come their twentieth birthday?

    ………………………………………………….

No one can argue with your point that we don’t give youth a chance. The only examples that spring readily to mind are McGeady and Forrest. I’m struggling to think of another youth in the last decade.

It’s a huge fault by Celtic managers. Why pay money to have a youth system at all. I have been banging on since the summer about signing Finnboggasson but I also posted that I would have been happy if we had named Tony Watt as our number one striker for the season.

I find it frustrating knowing that we have the talent – like the boys who shone yesterday and Dylan McGeouch – but we don’t use it. The odd game or 20 minutes here and there is not enough. We laugh at Sevco because they are paying way over the odds to win the lower leagues but we should also be able to win our domestic games giving regular games to our youth players. If they get kicked off the park by hammer throwers then the manager should be shouting about it from the roof tops. He should be making the point to his colleagues that their clubs will not succeed in getting into the group stages of Europa League or CL unless they adopt a European approach to football instead of the one they adopt when they play Celtic. Some of these teams are capable of playing good football on the ground. Our youngsters would thrive if this were the case.

I flew from Brisbane to Perth to see Celtic play. I took my kids with me. We had a lot of fun and certain employees of Celtic made it memorable, Scott Brown, Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson being prominent in my memory, but in the hotel after the game against Perth Glory me and my boys were sitting at the bar when Kayal came in, I asked him for a photo with my kids and with drama, and I mean drama, he refused, because his nose had been broken.

As far a Behram Kayal and a Celtic strip went. for me – it ended right there.

I used to love Kayal but he nearly got Neil Lennon sacked in the famous/ infamous 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock. He was in dispute with the club over a new contract and never tried a leg during that first half. In fact he looked as if he was trying to get himself sent off. James Forrest, Tony Stokes and Charlie Mulgrew stood up to be counted IIRC.

  20. Kayal and Ledley out,Johannsen and Biton in with young Liam getting game time too.Biton looks a top player. The team needs re-vamped ,let’s have the courage to do it and don’t be afraid to play younger bhoys. As they showed yesterday, they play without fear.

  24. Kit,

in the first instance, a lot depends on who is selling the prospective clubs to the youngster and his family (just ask Kenny Dalglish about that!) But if a trip to the training facility was included, Celtic would win hands down.

As to the question or earnings, Celtic without doubt.

In one of the corridors at Lennoxtown, they have a sort of “Hall of Fame” of players who have all came though the academy and played for the first team or signed for other teams and been good solid pros.

Almost £30million worth at that time

You’ve just relgated kayal to the ‘must punt’ in my mind. Terrible story. You shold have broken his teeth to match (his partner is a dentist so easily sorted).

By way of contrast, I was at Aberdeen game on Friday night. As I was in the corporate section I didn’t take my football mad 11 yr old who was a bit sore at this decision. Post match I had a chat with Willo Flood and was telling him my son would have enjoyed his stunning strike. Willo asks me what my son’s name is… he then takes the programme out of my hand and writes on the front – ‘Lewis – you missed it son- Willo Flood’.. a cracking guy – who in my opinion is wrongly maligned on CQN. Its not his fault he wasn’t Stephen Fletcher. He left Celtic and has picked up DUFC player of the year twice before going to AFC and repeating his form. I’m not saying we missed out on Willo by selling him..but he is avery grounded decent guy who is a very good and consistent footballer..

Don’t answer that because neither of us knows the answer.

However, my initial question stands, in todays world I would not go near Celtic, you might think otherwise and good on you.
