ANGE POSTECOGLOU was mentioned as a candidate for the Leicester City job only moments after the announcement Brendan Rodgers had departed the club.

The Celtic manager had just watched the champions overcome Ross County 2-0 in Dingwall to restore their nine-point advantage at the top of the Premiership when news broke that the relegation-threatened Midlands outfit had parted company with the ex-Hoops gaffer.

It was only a matter of time before Postecoglou was linked with the job in a season where there have also been reports he has interested Leeds United, Everton, Southampton, Brighton and Wolves when they have looked for replacements in the dug-out after sacking their team bosses.

THE ENDGAME…Ange Postecoglou applauds the Celtic fans after the 2-0 win in Dingwall this afternoon.

Former Hoops hero Stiliyan Petrov reckons the 57-year-old Greek-Australian, who took over in Glasgow in June 2021, will remain in place for “another few years”, but accepted the obvious with the King Power club requiring a quick fix with the club in the midst of a relegation dogfight following their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace yesterday.

Asked about the likelihood of Postecoglou being rated as a possibility for Leicester, Petrov, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “Of course. Good managers and good players always get linked with big clubs especially down in the Premier League.

“But I believe he is doing a great job at Celtic and he will stay because it’s about the project.

“I think you’ve got the power, the players that he believes can play the style he preaches, so I’m not surprised, but I believe he will stay for another few years.”

Rodgers quit Celtic in February 2019 and spent just over four years at City where he won the English FA Cup.

However, the 50-year-old Northern Irishman and the board today decided it was time for a change.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank is the favourite to succeed Rodgers, with Postecoglou next.

Others being mentioned are Rafael Benitez, Marcelo Bielsa, Mauricio Pocchetino and Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Neil Lennon, a former Leicester City captain as well as being a two-time Hoops boss, has also been rated among the runners.

Rodgers’ assistant manager Chris Davies and fitness coach Glen Driscoll will also leave the club .

First-team coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell have been placed in charge on an interim basis.
