Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

Refer to my post on page 8 regarding injuries. We have a few problems that seem to compound each other regards injuries.

    1. We play tonnes of games (more than anyone in the league)

    2. We get the shit kicked out of us…..and the ref lets it happen.

    3. We play on deliberately manufactured poor pitches. It stresses joints and muscles already pushed too far by 1 and 2

Its easy to see why we have injuries.

Added to that we have a really poor squad! Major teams ie barca, real madrid etc etc can afford to rotate their squad to an extent (much better than we can) and still know they can dominate their leagues. If barca had to deal with repeatedly waterlogged pitches (in the winter) and overgrown pitches (in the summer) compounded with the refs letting the opposing team brutalise them PLUS playing way more games and having as poor a squad as we do then they would have as many injuries as we do!

Injuries are easy to see why they happen.

The most frustrating thing is why the squad dont surround the refs repeatedly when we get kicked (put some pressure back on them) our board dont shout about the players getting a beating week in week out.

plus shout about the state of the pitches we are forced to play on, aberdeen watered their pitch all day long to make it a mess. Knowing they have 2 away games after it to give the pitch time to recover, the sfa national pitch against the huns was unfit for a rugby game.

Has anyone else noticed, that over the years, we essentially have become serial plaintiffs against a defendant who is beyond the law?

As our footballing estate diminishes and our returns disappear, we find with horror that we have no redress, no avenues to stop the rot.

The keys to the house, the cheque-book and the future, lies in the hands of the people we gave it to.

When we look how far we have fallen in footballing returns on investment, it is now wonder that we have accepted without reservation, a diet of hasbeens and notbeens.

This Celtic is but a shadow of the past.

How did we miss the strategy that we should be employing football director to cover our rookie managers mistakes and give him guidance??

Coz that costs too much cash and is far too sensible?

You and Paul67 are in more of a position to ask those questions.

Ask them and publish it here.

No comment would be the likely response from the boardroom I fear.

  14. Is there still a sense of panic?

I know I felt it the other night, calmed down a bit not.

Time for out players and management to show their mettle.

    I still believe they will.

Naive? Perhaps, but will support the team from now until the season end, and celebrate another close title victory.

Competition, who would have thunk it?

I know we spend more than others in Scotland, doesn’t give us the right to win every game, that has to be fought for, played for.

We lacked that a on Wednesday from the little I saw.

Still Standing(and did not pick Sevco in Last Man Standing)

    Mike In Toronto,

Welcome back. I was talking to a woman yesterday who lives in Toronto but spends her winters in Drogheda. Small world. Good to see you back.

*a few years, in fact a good few years ago, I was at the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock. Mrs TT and her wee mammy went for a cup of tea and I went intae a pub for a pint of mince.

While there I got talking tae one of the residents of the wee village (pop 811 urban and 1404 rural).

After hearing that I actually lived in Canada (I never mentioned where) and no the Bonnie Banks, he told me he had lived in Toronto, he spoke of the Old Windsor House and Maple Leaf Ballrooms, home fae home for many Irish and Scottish ex-pats. Small world right enough.

On the way tae the Shrine we passed a bus with the sign Dunfermline on it. Mrs TT asked if I thought they were Tims!!!!!

After I had knelt down to pray at the gable end of the local small parish church where the apparition of Our Lady, St Joseph, and St John the Evangelist had appeared I asked for my wee favour.

Turning on the radio on getting back in the car I was greeted with the news that John Collins had scored at the bigot pit. As we headed down tae Clifden we were further informed that Paul McStay had made it 2.

My favour had been granted and the car rocked with the Rebs.

    Doc

I posted the same the other night, people moan about no competition then want a manager sacked when top of the league, Ronny has his frailties (mainly the players, his players) but apart from all that …… All the very best in LMS….you have a few people cheering you on the more a although you have to defeat Sevco, BBC, Sportsound, SSB, Daily Rectum, Evening Shark Jump, and last but not least William in Toronto, Sitting with the Bears and Lennybilly

Doc you need all our prayers, but best of luck

  20. BT

I’ll believe that when he says it. Anyhoos, the new pet rotweller will welcome him with open gub. All signs in place with police approval. :)))) HH

  21. Doc

I asked Mrs TET who I should pick re LMS this week and she said Kille, just couldn’t do it due to the elbows, cheat with the whistle and the super dooper magic hat factor, couldn’t pick thems either, best of.

WeefratheTim on 5th February 2016 11:06 pm – Name this stalker, sure someone will be able to identify them. If he posts on here then it’s really easy to track him. Name the Bassa

  23. GerryFTB, fair comment, I also agree with WC’s, we give the managers job to a relative newbie manager, then expect a win % of 90%.

I still think, given time and support he will succeed.

It isn’t always easy to stick the ole neck out after a couple of bad results.

Regarding Sevco, I’d rather loose than give them any type of support:-)

PS, I know the guys who have picked them don’t want to win!

  24. Doc and WC-the outlook is not inspiring,we all want success for the team ,manager, club, supporters. I would say 80/90% can’t see any progress or a future with RD in the job. We will go and support the guys in our colours on the pitch regardless. IMO the project has failed and we should have replaced a guy who is miles out his depth. The deeper problem as we all know, and are scared to lead with on here,is Peter Lawwell. His influence on football matters will scare away any managers of substance. HH

  25. Gerryfaethebrig…

We all welcome the challenge, it’s more to do with watching our team fall apart at the seems.

No structure, no leadership on /off the park.

    You can’t dispute that.

We all want the same. HH

  26. Bada Bing, I know the support will support, and would never question that.

I still think Ronny can succeed, we agree to differ on that.

On Lawwell, my opinion is mixed, he does what he is tasked with by his Board.

My problem is much more with the Board than PL, he does his job to the stipulation given by them.

He is over paid, but hey, who would refuse a wage rise?

And I am not asking for the Board to be sacked, but too many have sat for too long, fresh ideas on the Board would be a start, as always, just my opinion. But how to affect that Board level change?

  27. EDDIEINKIRKMICHAEL
