Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

By the way for what it’s worth I don’t think we are in a bad place

Celtic are one of the most successful sporting organisations on the planet with a wonderful romantic history that money couldn’t buy.

moaning is what football fans do best.

  4. On a positive note, PL has driven the bus to reintroducing standing at top flight football. That in itself is an outstanding piece of work.

Maybe we shouldn’t begrudge him his private zoo and sunken baths.

A good game to get the new guys game time.Broony,to get 30 mins to get him some more game time.

    Job done.Managing is easy.

Agree with you both. I’ve supported Ronnie from the off, but his deficiences are now coming to the fore. Who will be a successor, if at all, won’t hold my breath. Even mrs weefra reckons he should go. :-)) PL should now concentrate on ST sales. Mine is in doubt. (Believe that you’ll believe anything) but, you get my drift.

  7. I’d like to see CKR play next game, out on the pitch, cosh down his sock, ready to whack any hoops player that is shampooing it. I don’t know if this is strictly within the laws of the game, but might be worth trying

  8. Turkeybhoy –

This time last week I’d have been on similar lines with the team for Sunday but given the week we’ve had I full expect at least 9 of the starters on Wednesday to retain their places. I do hope we go 4-4-2 for this one mind you – playing 1 up against the mighty EKFC just sounds wrong.

The plan should be to then get 3 of our less used stars on as soon as, or rather if, we go 3 up and the job’s done.

A chance for Griffindor to move into the 30+ goals bracket.

  9. I Have Watched A few Celtic Teams in my life, ive Also watched Teams that Play out of Celtic Park Wearing The Green And White…Im watching the Latter Now….Celtic Team in name Only………Simple…

We all support Ronny, contrary to what a few of the blinded proclaim, but increasingly the Celtic support is doubting whether he’s good enough.

I am a Summerleebhoy now residing in Gartsherrie (for my sins) played the old Sunday league for Connections better know as Whifflett Arms as you will know, drank in the Forge and spent the Brattback 1998 in Lennybhoys boozer so I have had shandy or two over in that neck of the woods, even played the odd game of pool in the Barnyard !

Hope you have a great day and young Josh is doing well

The same support who proclaimed the “Ronny roar” fans can be a bit hypocritical or is the support just in the good times

  14. Doc

I genuinely hope your ‘increasingly small minority’ view is right.

In my opinion, the away support turned at Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

  15. Everyone has their breaking point

We support Ronny, but, personally after Legia I thought we had a pup, and pretty much nothing has altered that opinion.

Then you give him a year in the hope that he would improve.

Now I think we are jeopardising next season’s euro campaign by keeping him.

There seems to be a view that wanting rid of him is being disloyal. However, what damage is being done to the club by keeping him?

  16. What is the Stars on

    Gerryfaethebrig

    True

The attacks on the manager are obviously crazy ( in any rational analysis)

But football fans don’t do rational. We do passion. I have been to many matches over the years where sensible people lose all control of reality cos they are so fired up.

This from the man who was shouting ronny out as soon as he arrived

We’ll sing, we’ll cheer but outside the stadium we’ll voice an opinion.

    Great story, thanks for that.

I’m going about 20 miles up the road tomorrow to a village called Faughart, County Louth. It’s the birthplace of St Brigid.

    Football is just a game.

    Celtic, is much, much more.

I spend an inordinate amount of time from an already busy life on issues relating to Celtic. It doesn’t make me a better or worse Tim than anyone else, poster or otherwise.

What pishes the life out of me is when I come on here and guys are questioning the Celtic credentials of anyone who voices criticism of anything related to Celtic.

    It’s absolutely pathetic.

I’ve just been talking to Mick on the phone re the flag. The only thing I can think of is the Combined Aussie Rules and Gaelic Football game. They had a game in Ireland a few months back ,I think.Anyway I’ll ask around.

ps- Just told MM-I spoke to Willie Wallace yesterday,he and his good lady are coming to our wee club at Easter.Next season is the 50 years anniversary of the Lisbon Lions and it will be fantastic to have a Celtic legend in our wee town. Take care mate .HAIL HAIL.

Have you ever spoken to anyone employed at Celtic who has had direct dealings with Peter Lawell?

*naw but I got talking to a massive Tim over here, who has been in the boardroom on many occasions and in an official capacity, after the “Strachan Strachan GTF” game and asked him what was going wrong at Parkheid.

His response was that WGS wisnae a Celtic mhan. Wonder if like big Rod he heard that in the boardroom.

Narrow minded ? If you have a different opinion OK with that

If the “away” fans have turned fair play, you will know more about that than me, am just speaking about Celtic in general and for me there has been worse times than this, apologies for not having the same view but lumping everybody that doesn’t have the same view as narrow minded is a bit cheap unless everybody should have the same view

  27. Saint Stivs says SACK THE BOARD on

For the younger support. I hate to bring it up but here goes.

Scot Symon was a very successful manager of the first Rangers during the early 60s. He won six titles and trebles. He won 14 trophies.

He was sacked in November 1967.

    While top of the league.

The lesson from history is. Don’t undermine the guy in charge when he is leading the race

  28. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

    Have we improved?

Well, what are the K.P.I.s for Celtic.

Domestic competitions ? Organised, run and lorded over by organisations for which we have contempt ?

With their surrogates in the black on the field.

If those competitions are the major criteria for our support ,then we , as a support ,have indeed downgraded our expectations.

Europe is the only game in town. It`s the only K.P.I. for a coach which must be achieved.

    I don`t really give a damn about “……..in a row.”

The S.P.L. is merely a means to an end and it`s only importance is not domestic .

It`s access to Europe and the income which that will generate such that we might dream about competing where we belong.

    Where we belong.

Having said that ,U.K. should leave the E.C.
