Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

GerryFTB, fair comment, I also agree with WC’s, we give the managers job to a relative newbie manager, then expect a win % of 90%.

    ——-

I don’t think we do Doc. I think we want to see progress. I think we want to see a Celtic team with committed, organised and disciplined players who’re well coached and drilled in the basics. I’m often not seeing that.

Am not wishing a challenge due to us getting beat, but maybe with something to play for the fans react and the players respond….. Maybe I am a dreamer but we are still in pole position and in my mind head and shoulders above anybody we are facing….. But a young team who have shown they can’t win every game even though in my opinion they are better than their opponents

  5. Tontine Tim,

    Great story, thanks for that.

I’m going about 20 miles up the road tomorrow to a village called Faughart, County Louth. It’s the birthplace of St Brigid.

Her feast day is the 1st of February, also known as the start of The Celtic Spring!

Hopefully your story is a good omen!

(I won’t mention that EKFC have a St Brigid’s Cross on their club badge.)

I hope that you are well.

  6. Sipsini, we have had a rubbish week.

We had several weeks of pretty decent football prior to that. good results too.

I have said since Ronny arrived this would be a mixed, and bumpy journey.

I had hoped it would begin to even out by now, but it hasn’t, yet.

We are still ahead in the League, still in the SC. The result on Sunday was not unpredictable, given our history in that competition.

Aberdeen look to have improved, to me at least, they have gone on a couple of consistent runs this season, wth one big wobble.

We have regressed, can’t argue with that, points show as much.

Who could we replace Ronny with and guarantee better performance, and more importantly better result?

There are always more questions than answers, because we just don’t know what will happen.

  7. What is the Stars on

I want a challenge for celtic. They need to be challenged. …

But rather than Aberdeen improving I think we are dropping down to their level.

    That’s not progress.

    Improvement ?

Would league and Scottish cup be better than league and league cup ?

Don’t give me Europe as it might be the same manager but it’s not the same team, what is your description of improvement

  9. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

Posted prior to Wednesday’s game that I wanted to all 3 ‘transfer window ‘ players start the match as I thought that was why new players were signed by any team… To play them. At least there was some movement in that direction and I have to say that they had a lot more ‘dig’ than nearly all the rest. Now I know it is a lower league team on Sunday, but, can we please start with all 3 and Scott Allan and go with 2 at least up front and for God’s sake bringing everyone back for corners. Not the best example perhaps but the Special One never brought everybody back with ANY of his teams, not even in Seville. You never know it might actually work. KTF.(that shud be STOP bringing everyone back for corners)!

Are you longing for a challenge from a new club if you don’t want Aberdeen to improve, don’t really understand your last post but that probably says more about the reader than the poster

  11. HT, Evening Chief.

I’m not arguing Black is White here.

I see a team, at time is dis-organised, woefully at times.

But I also see fast flowing stuff, too, fleetingly I do admit.

But my point is the “project” is long term one.

That is the long and short of it for me.

Ronny may get sacked next week, if the unthinkable happens on Sunday.

I doubt that though, and I still think we will win the Title, playing better than we have, no, can’t say that, not so far anyway.

My overall point is I see the Board, actually Mr. BehaveYourself as our biggest problem at present.

Malaise in organisations can, often, come from the top down.

Give belief and direction from the top of an organisation, can and will show benefits throughout the organisation.

Good points, well made and well balanced – makes such a change from the Peter Pan Brigade (Bhoys who never grew up) whose bile leads them to blame all negatives on Peter Lawwells salary.

*absolutely and as Oldtim and TD67 say they have no constructive input other than “heated driveways, bonuses and absentee landlord”.

It seems that there some who cannae enjoy what we have for greetin. Why, I don’t know, mibbees they’re just contrary.

There is one who has a pathological erection for Peter Lawwell. Why, again I cannae answer that.

I’ve been in business, small as it is, it’s a different world from just clocking in.

I’ve also been in senior management in operations and business in a billion dollar plus establishment where budgets being monitered are so so essential.

Had KPI’s which if met ensured a healthy salary plus bonuses, if not meant the jotters.

I did what my masters ordered and they did what their masters asked and at the end of the day the President/CEO carried out the Board’s orders. That’s the way it is in the corporate world.

As for DD, he bankrolled fan favourite MON’s tenure and when the money dried up yer MON was for the joe the toff.

Aye I know he had a sick wife and as I’ve said before the world is full of men and women with sick spouses and weans but had tae carry on as they were the main financial support.

Allegedly MON was offered a leave of absence with a caretaker brought in, possibly WGS, but declined. That was his prerogative, but probably closer tae life in the slow lane than any other reason.

    Sipsini …. ha!

I always thought that was just the CQN greeting…. but, having bet on them in the pools, you’ve got me worried now!

  14. Gerryfaethebrigg…

My definition of improvement would be not getting beat by, motherwellRoss county and aberdeen in the past few weeks…So you obviously disagree..So ..Explain

  15. Doc…

I’ve thought long and hard about a replacement for Ronny and can’t think of one in our price bracket that would stir the support.

All I really want is someone that can get a formation on our park that teams that we play don’t know exactly what to expect.

Our set up is so predictable…FIFA 4 comes to mind, that came from my bhoy that plays it.

Even my my daughter lambasts his tactics ;)

Apologies to any wummin lurkin :)

  16. Doc

I can accept that we’re not able to afford an established, experienced manager and that that ultimately leads us relying on guys who are destined to learn as they work.

It must be an incredibly stressful job, that most of us can’t even imagine, but I don’t see Ronny learning. Or if he is, it’s not being transferred onto the park.

  17. What is the Stars on

    Gerryfaethebrig

Sorry if you misunderstood or I didn’t make myself clear

A challenge is good, we should embrace it.

However the challenge should be provided by the teams below us improving to get up to our level rather than us dumbing down to their level

I think obviously we are not as good as we were 3 / 5 years ago.

Partly that’s down to economic reality partly it’s down to the fact that a team who cannot be mentioned left the stage and the board felt no need to invest in the team in order to stay ahead.

  18. Sipsini, Miss Doc came in tonight trying to persuade me Ronny’s time was up too.

She is now in bed, not talking to me.

I hope I’m right, but more, I think the Board see a long term solution in Ronny.

Training in the long term, build a team rather than buy one.

    Only time will tell.

  19. Gerryfaethebrig on

    BGX

    Explain ?

Ross Co was a shocker, I still don’t think it was a penalty, and I know it wasn’t a red, otherwise sometimes football teams lose football games, the over reaction is a total joke, in my years on this planet I have never know the League/Skol cup to be such an important trophy, it was a day oot no more no less, the “treble” was a thing from the south side in my opinion, I didn’t care when St Martin won the treble, it’s all about the league and personally the Scottish cup hampden in the sun, but anyways fair play if you think we are in a bad place…. I don’t

  20. TontineTim…

.If MON bolted because of what he saw coming(and i Believe he did)..

.All i can say is No Wonder……

  21. HT, I see spells where we are playing good attractive football, too little admittedly.

see my previous to Sipsini as to why I think this will be a long term approach from the Club.

They have invested in a philosophy, and I think they intend to see it through.

Off for a game of FIFA:-)

Or a drink and some tunes.

  22. What is the Stars on

    Doc

You need to see a doc

    Ronny is not the answer

We are stuck with him for the rest of the season.

And mad as it sounds he might well win 4 of the 6 trophies available in 2 years and still be sacked. ..but

Have you ever spoken to anyone employed at Celtic who has had direct dealings with Peter Lawell?

  24. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Given we spend 6+ times what other teams spend I expect us to win almost all of the time domestically. I can accept defeats when we have been fully committed but suffered bad decisions, poor luck or faced a defence and Goalkeeper on their best game.

It is much less easy to digest when we lose because we were heartless, clueless and poorly organised.
