The day after the opening Champions League qualifier of the season can get a bit tasty on the blog but business has been pedestrian since last night’s professional performance by the men in hoops. If you wanted to be pushy, you could point to a couple of glimpses of goal which fell Cliftonville’s way as a result of Celtic defenders being dragged out of position, but that’s about the measure of an unfamiliar defence at any time.
Congratulations to Georgios Samaras, who scored in Celtic’s first five European away games last season and obliged again yesterday. A remarkable record for a player who is never employed as a penalty box striker.
It would also be tardy not to congratulate Celtic and Cliftonville supporters on their exemplary behaviour throughout the day. After recent disturbances in Belfast there were fears that a group of travelling Celtic supporters could find trouble in the city but the casual observer could be forgiven if he thought we were in Seville again.
Maybe Belfast council should invite us over every July to spread a bit of cheer. We do football very well, in all respects.
Neil Lennon can now kick back and relax with a formality of a second and the next round not for another…. 12 days!! Maybe not. 12 days is not a lot of time to do anything in football, so every day, including match day against Cliftonville, will need to be meticulously planned to ensure we are ready to face an opponent who could well be midseason. Relax, and you’re finished in this business.

It is indeed a nice feeling getting over that 1st hurdle.

Great news my friend, hopefully the next stage goes just as smoothly, stay well.

Yeah, same here touch of the Ramsdens level – oops
Reserve team at Brentford, more of a first team look for the second leg, perhaps with a couple of youngsters getting a game. And then full strength for the next round.
Football management made easy.
Keep your friends close, and your Rioja even closer.

Posting rubbish on CQN just because a German beside you is watching you.
Development squad team for the Brentford game I would suggest, with possibly a few of the players who failed to make the match last night – Matthews, Ledley, Mulgrew, Virgil…injuries permitting of course.
HH!!
Ole Rory maybe warching the tennis this weekend again… currently +5

Hola from sunny and hot Barcelona.
Very professional play yesterday from Hoops. I dont know why but i have bizarre feeling that next Celtic opponent will be Slovan Bratislava/Bulgarian champ. And Play off legs will be vs Legia ;)

But
Unfamiliar defence. . Any idea how many times forster lustig efe kelvin and izzy have played as a unit.
Im guessing a fair few
After watching last night I feel a lot better about the up-coming season.
However, with Hooper all but away I really do think we need a goal-scorer coming in. Am worried about Balde in general but will give him time; regardless I don’t think he’s a goalscorer and wasn’t brought to the team as such.
When Brown and Ledley are back fully fit we’ll just about have enough in the centre of midfield (would like to see more competition out wide) with Kayal, Brown, Ledley (Mulgrew if needed), and Rogic hopefully growing into contention along with some of the development squad as backup at least for the league. If we go for a Wanyama replacement it either has to be a like-for-like or a Lubo type playmaker (possibly changing the system to a 4-2-3-1 or similar with defensive midfielders anchoring attacking midfielders/wide forwards and a out and out striker).
At the back I still believe we could benefit from a top, top player (would have to be near the end of his career for us to afford) who can go in and at least help the younger/ less experienced defenders we have develop.
We need cover for Emilio (don’t know if the youngsters are good enough to fill in at this position?).

Well Neil looks pretty relaxed at Muirfield, and gave a good interview with John Inverdale on Radio 5 just a few minutes back. Neil also commented on the visit to Cliftonville and the atmosphere created by both sets of fans, and the importance of recognising that. Glasgow Celtic bring the spirit of goodwill to Belfast? Well that is the way I saw it too.
Gordon J and Tallyboy
Neil said in his after match TV interview last night that most of last night’s team would be involved at Brentford and in the return game v Cliftonville on Tuesday.
I don’t get to see the Tic very often these days but will be at Brentford on Saturday and in Dublin on 10th of August but as yet I haven’t got a ticket for the Liverpool game!
Seems a wee bit cooler down here in the big smoke today, only about 26c at the moment and a bit fresher. BBC forecasting Saturday to be a bit cooler.
when is the draw for the next round and who are likely opponents, does anyone know?

Will Neil be allowed into the clubhouse at Muirfield?

frankiebhoy,
I thought he said that those who played last night would not be involved at Brentford?

Surrounded by the stuff . Elderly neighbor makes lots —- rough and lethal . . Mrs S of T refuses to drink his stuff but tells him it makes great window cleaner..
Fab 30 minute storm on Tuesday night. Looked like there was going to be a repeat last night but nothing happened.. Weather forecast for tonight is a short / violent electrical storm .
NFL said last night that most of those who played last night WILL NOT be involved at Brentford.
Watched the game in a Spanish bar, locals and English must have thought I was insane, kicked every ball until we scored.
Can anyone tell me, if we get through this round do we qualify for Europe?
